Ayumi Hamasaki is in my opinion the best lyricist. Why? Eh, yeah. You can probably figure that out for yourself. I was not happy with the lyrics of Party Queen because it was for her doing something very... not her, let's say that. But I shall learn to live with it. But, yeah... she hasn't been that strong anymore than in her early years. At least her voice improved a lot. Anyway, now I am sounding like I despite everything she does. No. There is always at least three songs I can personally identify with. Still she is my queen of pop. And lyrics.
I think that Anna Tsuchiya is a strong lyricist as well. Especially Kuroi Namida is a beautiful song and so she has plenty of them. And alan on the third place with her beautiful touching voice and tender way of bringing the message in her songs to her fans. Worst? Well, I prefer to use the word 'bad.' I am sorry, I like her a lot but her lyrics are certainly nothing special, Namie Amuro and I also do think that the lyrics of korean band 2NE1 are flat as well.

Best: 1. Nakajima Miyuki
2. Shiina Ringo 3. Maaya Sakamoto I can't really come up with a worst...any artist who doesn't write their own lyrics typically have lyrics that are all over the place and sometimes bad. I guess if I had to pick an overrated one, it would be Utada. She really recycles known proverbs, and don't even get me started on her English lyrics. Her music is good, though. |

I'd love to throw ZARD aka Izumi Sakai into this mix - she was amazing songwriter
![]() I first heard of her through her presence in the DragonBallGT anime and it's through her that I got interested in JPOP - Ayu came soon after and made me jump straight in, but Izumi has a special place in my heart ![]() ZARD's lyrics are here: http://zardthebest.tripod.com/translation.html And for worst, right now I'm feeling Lady Gaga post-Fame Monster and Katy Perry/Ke$ha....lol |

Honestly, the only lyrics I pay attention to is Ayu's lyrics, since she always writes them and maybe Gackt (forgot whether or not he writes them...
![]() And worst...hmm, I'd have to say Utada's english lyrics, like others have mentioned. They can sometimes be awkward to listen to. Last edited by melina_t; 11th March 2012 at 12:09 AM. |

Utada's lyrics are really bad, I think. Sometimes her japanese lyrics are ok, but most of the time I don't like them at all.

Nakajima Miyuki, here lyrics are just pure gold, no wonder why her lyrics are sometimes still relevant even until today, most of Japanese probably know who is her.
The rest for me are... Hyde (L'Arc~en~Ciel / VAMPS), Chihiro Onitsuka, Shiina Ringo, Yuki Kajiura, Kato Miliyah, Ayumi Hamasaki, and Otsuka Ai.

I don't think I even have to mention Ayu lol, her lyrics (especially her earlier works) are just amazing.
Honestly, usually I don't bother looking for the translation of Asian stuff. If I like the music, it's enough for me. And if I happen to come across to a translation and the lyrics sound good to me, then it's even better. But most of the time I don't really care. Epik High has really caught my attention with their lyrics, though. I can honestly and without being biased say that their lyrics are one of the best I've ever read. They're just true poetry, both the English and the Korean lyrics. I seriously recommend their stuff. Kim Jong Wan is a really good lyricist too, I think. He's the singer of a Korean band Nell. When it comes to worst.. I have no idea tbh.

The best for me are Ayu (obviously) and Kana Nishino. Maybe it's because I am young (18) but I find Kana's lyrics to be touching and very relatable. She is one of the only artists where I read her lyrics while I'm listening to the song almost every time. She has a lot of potential.
![]() Utada Hikaru's English lyrics are laughable at times. Taking My Money Back's lyrics never fail to crack me up, and the part in The Workout where she says: I was talking with a born-again Christian "So what's it like to start life all over?" He said "Amen, I feel like I've been rediscovering the tomb Tutankhamen." Lol, what? ![]()

Utada Hikaru has always been so hit-or-miss to me. Because she is popular and writes her lyrics she receives praise, but I don't think that makes her a best lyricist. She's not terrible (although some of her English tracks made me frown), but neither is she particularly superior from what I can tell. I always felt she was more about overall sound, being particularly innovative in her composing, rather than lyrics.
I cannot really name a worst lyricist, but as far as best-- I am surprised (or maybe not) that anybody has yet to mention KOKIA. Aside from being one of the most incredible vocalists I have ever heard, her lyrics are like poetry. A different style from Ayu's, but deep and well-crafted nonetheless. I was speaking with a Japanese friend of mine, and he explained to me that, particularly in their native Japanese form, KOKIA is a master lyricist. The translations don't quite convey her ability to use her native language. Some do, though. Such as Arigatou, Time to Say Goodbye, and The Power of Smile. The song "Harmony (Chouwa Oto)" was partially written in code. Daijina Mono wa Mabuta no Ura ni is one of the most heart-wrenching songs I've ever heard. |

OMG I love this thread!!
Best: Ayu: I can say 99.9% of her lyrics I adore. She really has a gift for it. And I have to disagree with people saying her post-2009 material isn't as good.Songs like countdown, the NEXT love, sending mail, Eyes, smoke, magic, Don't look back, and Love song are AMAZING...!! Koda Kumi: She's a hit-and-miss lyricst but overall she has some really good and sensual stuff! Globe Seriously...why hasn't anybody commented on them??? Utada She's a great JAPANESE lyricst with unusual play on words and realistic situations described in a surreal-like manner is pure genius! Ex. Goodbye Happiness, Hikari, Let's Be Happy, Play Ball, etc. Mariah Carey Her unreleased album tracks are so deep its haunting. Ex. Looking In, Outside, For the Record, The Wind, and Petals(pure teardrops) Spice Girls COME ON! Songs like Too Much, Viva Forever, Naked, and Oxygen...you know that's some beautiful stuff

I have to second the people saying MAA too, her lyrics are brilliant. Chihiro Onitsuka too. While they do become a bit cliché, I do like Kana Nishino's lyrics because they're simple, relatable and just... really girly. She has some really funny lyrics too. Obviously, Ayu too. Especially her old stuff. As for bad... I don't know. Songs that have lyrics which are just shallow or don't have a big message serve a total different purpose. They're not bad, just doing a different job. |
