Sometimes I wish English had a gender neutral pronoun. =/
Anyway, in AT05 there was a funny scene in the extras where Ayu messes up his name, maybe, by calling him Subaru? I don't remember exactly, but that's how I remember his name.

^ it? lol, although that might be offensive to some.
the english language is to homophobic to have a gender neutral pronoun... although it might not be homophobic and more 'label obsessive.' |

In general people seem to have the need to identify humans clearly as he or she by gender typical behavior and appearance.

i dont mean to be disrespectful, but this pretty much came to a shock to me. like just too sudden. I am not homophobic and i am happy for Hide for who he is now. but just wondering why would he announce publicly? is this for some publicity? he still looks quite MAN..

^Maybe he came out about it to bring awareness to the issue. Like you said yourself, you are very shocked about it. But, this really isn't something to be overly shocked about, but because it is quite taboo many people react this way, when really it is a understand able thing to do. One of the ways to have the transgendered community be accepted as equals is to talk about it so that people can learn more. I think a lot of the prejudice towards really any parts of the gay/trans community is that people fear what they don't understand. Talking openly about it will get rid of fear and create understanding.

^ i agree with you, but you dont think its shocking to be a man one day and then a woman the next (physically).
I don't think it has anything to do with taboos... but just thinking about it... to a 'normal' person why would you want to change you sex? It's just shocking over all. But it happens and I think the 'shock' factor comes from why someone would do it. Not that they did it. Its hard for people to try and grasp something that they dont understand and people are still arguing over the fact that homosexuality is a choice or not, so for something like this... well you can image how those people feel/ dont understand and find it shocking. |

It may be shocking to those who don't understand but why must she not show her true self to keep those from learning to accept? From one day, a man, to the next, a woman? You don't think she had inner conflict with her gender for an extended length of time? This is a big social issue and to make yourself public regarding it IS what can assist with changing that "normal". lol at various people saying "I'm not a homophobe" .... reminds me of "I'm not racist" "I have black friends"

^ that's because Alfred Kinsey was a quack who slept with his assistants for his study.
But I will agree with the point of no one is 100% one or the other... and one of the posters forgot to mention Bisexual people. They exist. And they most likely have more fun then someone who identifies themselves as one or the other. =) Quote:
Sadly there will never be a new 'normal' because biologically speaking its man and woman. The whole point of an animal is to hook up and have as many babies as possible. If you dont fit that agenda then you are not 'normal' the reason why i say 'normal' with the ' ' is because we are people and we are different then regular animals... although we are animals but we have a conscious and we know the difference between right and wrong (which is a completely different debate itself) we thing we are better then the 'normal' animal, but we expect to act like 'normal' animals with morals. As for my comment about being a man one day and a woman next... I said physically. I said nothing about her inner most thoughts. If she had surgery then it happened over night, or during the day.. depends on when she had it. And again, I dont think the 'normal' will ever change. Because in order for it to be normal the majority of people have to do it... and if the majority of people are have conflicting sexual gender issues... then the world will be in trouble... I can see how it's shocking. It can be shocking for everyone.
Imagine the people around him, maybe there were people who didn't know. Now the person they thought they knew is different. People handle change in different ways. You can never know the situation. But I think it's very important that it's out...especially in Japanese culture. Bringing awareness can always be one of the hardest things to do.

Kinda shocked me but I'm glad to get an update on Hide. We never get enough updates from past Ayu/Namie dancers.

actually there are a lot of local languages (African, Latin/South American/Australian) that have a 3rd gender that is neither male or female.

In many languages, there are gender neutral pronouns. In Chinese if we're referring to someone, we say "ta" which could mean he, she or it.
I think a country in Europe recently (within the last 5 years) decided to add a gender neutral pronoun to their language. English could also add one if they felt like it (come on Oxford Dictionary). Homophobic isn't the right word to use though. That word describes people more. Where is Cory when you need her?

English has "it". It's just that we have such strong connotations attached to the word where we tend to only think about things and not people when using it.
And yeah, there ARE other gender categories. They just weren't ever talked about. I guess Intersex would be the biggest "other" category here. And there's so much debate over what exactly that means, and how we can even apply it. It reminds me of the case of Caster Semenya, the athlete from South Africa, who was almost stripped of her records after a gender test found her to be closer to the of a male? Many people identified her as intersex because of this, even though she, herself, still felt that she was a woman. I think they later used a different gender test to say that she was a woman. There are tons of cases like this...People just don't talk about them so much. Moral of the story. Gender and identity are much more complicated than most people are used to understanding, and we shouldn't have to put identity into specific boxes with certain labels. Every individual is going to be different. Which is why, personally, I always leave it up to them to decide, what they want to be and how I see them.
