i didn't have TO BE and too late single mp3s... so I can't compare... but I guess TO BE single's music should be as same as the pv one rite? Then I can see the difference.

talking about monochrome, I was so sad that it wasn't on A BEST when the tracklist had been out.... It's like a big mistake not putting this excellent song into the BEST album.

Is it just held or is there an effect that makes the "o" sound skip to the rhythm of the song? if it skips, it's the single version.

"TO BE"'s biggest differences are the intro's instrument fading a bit after each note instead of just echoing at a steady volume, and the drums are quite a bit different in places. In the intro, just before the mandolin kicks in, there's a specific drum fill that's very easily discernable from the original mix. If there's a "DOON DOON DOON, doon doon doon" just before the mandolin, and the very beginning sounds sparse (like the heavenly-sounding background synth seems to dominate over the echoing & fading lead "plucking" synth instrument) then it's the album version.

"immature" has just a totally different arrangement. the album version sounds like the Concert Tour 2000 performance, and there's alot of emphasis on lead keyboards. It sounds kinda like the disney electrical parade music at times ^^;;... the single version is the original, "JT Original CM Version", used in the Momo no Tennensui commercial with the mannequins. It's darker sounding, the synthesizer sounds like it wants to be an electric guitar when it grows up. It's more raw-sounding but i got tired of it easily, i tend to prefer the "prettier" album version.
Thanks for the detailed explanation, Del. I can't say I recognize a really significant difference in TO BE or immature, but then again, they're probably more subtle variations that only someone with sharp perception would be attuned to. I recognized the difference in monochrome right away. I guess I'll have to compare the seperate versions.

Kind of like with the 2003 rebirth mixes. I didn't really recognize a change in those either. Hm.

They're just mixed by a different person, the instruments themselves are the same... here are the credits for all 3 versions of TO BE:

TO BE "Original Mix"
Mixed by Atsushi Hattori

TO BE "Album Version"
Mixed by Dave Way

TO BE "2003 ReBirth Mix"
Mixed by Koji Morimoto (this one sounds like a combination of the other two... like the intro fades a LITTLE bit, the drums are sorta louder)

It takes some listening to hear the differences between the three, but I'm at the point now where i can tell which version it is instantly as soon as i hear the intro. Because i have no life, and TO BE was my favorite ayu song for awhile.

And immature really is completely different so i'll upload the CM version for you later so you can hear... sounds like you only had the album version to begin with.

Probably. I don't think I've heard the CM version at all. I love discovering things like this.

LOL. I'm sure you do have a life. Just like I manage to have a life outside of these forums. Nah. We just know how to appreciate truly one-of-a-kind music.

The TO BE video was my favorite for so long, even though most people thought it was too weird/boring. Heh. I have to listen to that song more often. These days it's been more catching up with her new songs that drop left and right, rather than kicking back with the classics... she seems to have more music coming out than I can keep up with.

I love the TO BE pv! It's so colorful I'm surprised more people don't do cosplays of some of those outfits. And i'm with you on the quick releases.... i mean, she used to release even faster and for some reason i used to be able to keep up but i can't now! lol... man, crazy to think that she used to have a single every 2 months on average.

It always scares the bejesus out of me, so even though I love the song, I rarely listen to it. If I do, I change the track before it's over.

Scares you? I sometimes have that reaction, even though it's pretty senseless logic. I guess it has to do with not expecting to hear a sudden shift in tone like that.

The song "Valley of Mist" from the .hack soundtrack is sad & pretty. An overall gentle song, but there are these really creepy sounding bells at the end of the song. And I don't know why but they freak me out

i made a version of monochrome with an ending AGES ago, wish i still had it. It ended rather like it does in Concert Tour 2000 act 1. I'd posted it here, so i wonder if anyone has it... this was like, mid-late 2003 though ^^;; maybe i can make another one with audacity when i get it installed.

As luck would have it, the thread you posted a few years back showed up as a "similar" thread (see bottom of page). Almost as if it came to us, huh?
And the links in your yahoo group still worked. Amazing.

EDIT: here's "monochrome" with an ending. You did a great job with this!

I had no problem with it.

In a version I used to have, the guy would speak, and after about three seconds, I'd hear a door slam in the background. Song over.

In my current one, there's no guy saying anything. Song just cuts out when it's supposed to.

My old A Song is born cut out at 4:16 or so. I wondered why, but I have the full 6:17 version now. It sounds rather different.
