Anyway, I agree that AYU-MADONNA aren't similar music-wise, but both are trendsetters, put on the best shows, elaborate PV's and covers and so on

Namie Amuro-Mariah Carey
They both made their comebacks in 2005. And They've both been around since the early 90's. Both Mariah and Namie's careers flopped majorly however they came back and indeed had a new urban feel to their music. Plus Mariah alwasy has that blonde hair as does Namie with her warm brunette colored hair. BoA-Lady GaGa or Ciara or BoA BoA is talented in the dance department and also has a good voice on her. Ciara like BoA is real flashy/stylish. She can dance and sing as well. Utada Hikaru-Utada self explanatory AI-Eve both keep it gangsta XD j/k Koda Kumi-Fergie/Britney Spears Koda is a confident singer making music she likes and made up her own style(ero-kawaii) instead of being a replica of the many jpop female singer in the industry. Fergie too did her own thing following her own rules and style which made both Koda Kumi and Fergie so popular. Ai Otsuka-Hannah Montana Both cute singers whose target audience is children. Misia-Jennifer Hudson They both have super strong voices that gives you goose bumps. Music is soothing and refreshing. Mika Nakashima-John Legend (sex change) Very mature style in their music. There is only one B and it's Beyonce and I'm not even going to start with Ayumi and Madonna.

Ayumi - Madonna
staying power, trendsetters, they both go against a lot of taboos (even if a lot of ayu stuff don't looks too bold in western eyes, a lot of things she did in her career are very complicated in japanese culture), the concerts, they both are top performers and they both releases music they like instead of what is hot at the moment. Koda - Fergie The sexy, little clothing, girl having fun based image (and don't start with the "koda is not like that anymore", I watched Taboo PV xD) Namie - J-lo R&B/Hip Hop dancing divas BoA - Britney Comercial pop princess with dancing oriented performaces Hikki - Bjork? But Utada's sound is much more comercial and less experiemental... So, I don't really now if they are anything alike... I don't really think that there is someone else like Utada in pop industry... Ai Otsuka - Gwen Stefani? They both sells using weirdness (clothing, pvs, concepts), childish image (don't need to explain Otsuka... but gwen is aways with some fairytale thing, pirate, circus, etc.), but trying to have fresh music

I agree about the Madonna comparison, but too many times Ayu is compared to Britney, and they have nothing in common. Not music, style, personality or anything. The popularity maybe yeah, but I think Ayu's popularity in Japan is more like Madonna's.
I'd compare Koda Kumi to Rihanna, maybe? Only with Kuu having a better voice. But their music style is similar, and their styles have a lot in common too. Though I don't like Rihanna that much.
