As you and Misa-chan mention, I think all of rough/dead/cracky/dry would work here. Anyway, what ayu says here is simple. It's like "this multi-purpose massage salt can remove unneeded, dead (or old?) part of your skin surface and make your skin smooth and bouncy like that of a baby."

hum, i guess the origiral term "角質" (角=horn, 質=quality, in this case) is used only in japanese cosmetic industy when it's related to skin texture.

Actually she said in an old interview (Ready Go! 2001-2002 something like that?) that she has a bad sight. There was this old interview (15 yo) when she wears glasses, and she always wears contact lenses as far as I know.
