Well, I've certainly been duped all this time. I'm not much of an ELT connoisseur, so at first listen it sounded very similar to Mochida Kaori. The arrangement was just different enough to make it seem that much more legit.

I think you mean that her voice is "husky". Interestingly, a lot of people hate Ayu's voice because it is to the opposite extreme, in that it is rather "squeaky".

And the truth is, a singer is supposed to sing from his or her stomach region. In fact, really well-trained vocalists sing from even lower, relaxing their pubic muscles through their pelvic floor. Quite frankly, Kumi's vocal technique and pitch have always been exponentially stronger than Ayu's has ever been. Anyone who disagrees with this knows nothing about singing.



With that said, let's just kill this Ayu vs. Kuu debate right here, because it's mind-numbingly stupid.

I think people seem to be confusing Kuu's generally bland ballads for a lack of vocal talent. I keep reading: "I hate Kuu ballads," "Kuu ballads bore me". But she wouldn't be singing a Kuu ballad, now would she? It's a cover.

Ayu's ballads are generally very, very well-composed, where a lot of Kumi's ballads have been quite generic. However, since very few of these ballads have been composed by either artist herself, this is a matter of her taste level via song selection, and not a matter of vocal talent. I think Ayu undeniably has more refined taste than Kumi. But that has nothing to do with Kumi's ability to perform a superb cover of an Ayu song.

And I'm sorry, but anyone who thinks that AAA, sifow, and Morning Musume.--these idols who collectively have some of the weakest voices in J-Pop today--deserve to sing an Ayu ballad, but Koda Kumi is just not qualified, CLEARLY has no idea what the hell they are talking about.

I say all this as a person whose top artist on Last.fm is Hamasaki Ayumi with 2232 scrobbled listens since Oct. 2006--including unscrobbled listens, it is probably closer to 5000. Koda Kumi is tied at #11 (with sifow, funnily enough) with 116 listens.

I dare you to call me an Ayu-hater.



Fans these days need to span out, study some different music, and refine their palates before passing judgments. Blind worship is just nonsense.

Husky. That was the word I was looking for. I do like darker voices though, which is why I like ayu's newer stuff.

Kuu's voice has probably one of the widest range that I've heard so far...

Although her ballads can sometimes be so generic and boring... but you can clearly hear her range in all of her songs.

The only type of Ayu songs that I don't think Kuu should cover are her newer ones like talkin' 2 myself etc... those are a tad too low for Kuu.

But something with a huge range like Dearest? I think Kuu can do it.

Kuu totally could do Dearest. She has a good voice. Whether people like the sound of it is opinion not fact. Anyone who says that she doesn't for the reason that they don't like her is childish...

I still say, though, that it should just be A SONG FOR XX cover album. It goes so well with the whole 10th anniversary theme.

evolution -meets BoA- differently from Dearest which is a very simple song that can be covered by any person in this world, evolution is actually one of ayu's signature songs. BoA wouldn't be able to nail it, because that song has way too many ayu elements: la, la, la, ayu's fast singing, etc.

Boys & Girls -meets TOHOSHINKI- ewww, this song needs the female high pitched vocals for its cheeriness...seeing a bunch of men going "na na na na na na na..." would be horrible

SEASONS - otsuka Ai - bad, just baaaad..SEASONS with squeekiness does not match
Fly high - TRF
Boys & Girls | Amuro Namie - not something that suits namie...way too cheery for the kind of stuff she sings

(I'm not criticizing the choices, because the thread was made for fun, but I just felt like pointing those out because kuu covering Dearest is actually one of the most normal choices for an artist covering a song there)

Yet I see nobody freaking out and going "no, don't touch that please". I still think it's clear that some ppl are trying to reassure their hate (or extreme dislike for those who deny the hate word)for kuu here. It's always kuu that has to pop out in these discussions:

ayu and kuu wins on polls for fashion trenders: "oh no, but kuu totally doesn't deserve it"
kuu appears on a artists covering ayu thread: "oh no but kuu can't totally cover it"
kuu wins some award "oh no because kuu didn't deserve it. ayu totally did"

I wonder how many times will people have to have kuu as a sort of dark shadow following ayu

1) Depend on you - Ai Otsuka -> To work well, they'd have to change the pace of the song to something more sakuranboish imo.
2) SIGNAL - Tommy february6 -> I'd honestly just choose a better song for Tommy She doesn't deserve SIGNAL...but maybe it would indeed work as February's since the song does have a cheery mood
3) Boys & Girls -> Ami Suzuki (i like that idea, riozz!) -> I can't comment since I've never listened to Ami
4) appears - sifow - would work fine!
5) Duty - Namie Amuro -> In the parts where ayu sing faster i'm not sure if namie would make it work fine. The rest of the song would work well though
