This is definitely her most hip-hop album yet. "Touch My Body" is probably the most pop.

the album sounds very promising

the songs with B.Cox as the producers sound the best, "I Stay In Love" and especially "For The Record".

A couple songs sound interesting but I feel like most of the album is the exact same song. I prefer old school Mariah.

Me too. Everything from No. 1's and back was just classic. I miss those days.

As a fan of both old school and new school Mariah, I have to say that I too get sad when I think about albums like Butterfly or Daydream and realize she'll never make anything like that again. But I almost think of them as two separate artists... and while I like Mariah better than Mimi, she's still miles ahead of other female pop/R&B artists out there

I prefer old school Mariah as well. Like milky way said, up until #1's she was gold, but she's gone steadily downhill ever since. She isn't at a level of crap just yet, but rather at extreme mediocrity.

I definitely don't find her post #1s career to be a steady decline... actually, I find Rainbow to have been a worse album than Glitter. But then her quality of music took a nosedive with Charmbracelet. And then a huge spike upward to Emancipation, and maybe E=MC2 will only have a slight dip in quality.

And Mariah is so good with keeping up with what is popular and very at-the-moment, so maybe that's why people think she's putting out mediocre stuff... because mediocrity is what is selling these days But really, if MC had kept going in the adult-contemporary direction of the days of "old Mariah," her career would've been over by now. That era was very much dead and gone after Butterfly.

I agree 100% with your second paragraph, but in reference to the first one, I think Rainbow>Glitter>Charmbracelet>Emancipation. I just personally found Emancipation to be selling out, but that's just because I was so used to the old Mariah, not "Mimi". E=MC2 is actually sounding a lot better than I expected now that I've heard the previews on Amazon, but no tracks seem to be amazing.

Glitter better than Emancipation? I love Glitter, I think it was better than Rainbow or Charmbracelet, but it did not have the hit-after-hit feel of TEOM. TEOM wasn't what Mariah was used to doing, but it was a strong, powerful, quality contemporary R&B record with hit written all over it, which is honestly a rarity today. Most R&B today is one-hit-wonder drivel.

Rainbow is also one of her worst CDs, IMO. It was SUCHHHHH a huge drop after Butterfly, which was easily her best. Half of Rainbow's tracks sound like used up demos rejected by Destiny's Child. And Charmbracelet, as much as I loved "Boy" and a few others, sounded like something you'd expect Toni Braxton or some other washed-up adult-contemporary R&B singer to make. E=MC2 sounds like a half-step backwards to me, but I'm not mad at her. She's taking this hip-hop thing a little too far, but I still find it really enjoyable.

Oh god, y'all don't even wanna get me started on MC 17 years of fandom right here.

I definitely agree that Rainbow was a huge drop from Butterfly, which is also my favorite album, but I certainly didn't think it was a poor album. It's actually one of my favorites to be entirely honest. I liked that sort of transitional phase when Mariah began to have R&B influences, but still remained true to her roots (which I believe she did from Butterfly-Charmbracelet). Once she hit Emancipation, I just lost her because that really just is not my type of music, and it certainly isn't what made me a Mariah fan. So that's why I liked it much less than yes, even Glitter (which I don't consider a real album anyways, but that's just my opinion). I guess if you excluded Glitter from my previous post, then my order might seem a little more reasonable. Charmbracelet was actually pretty close to Rainbow in terms of how much I liked it. Rainbow seemed to skip around a bit while Charmbracelet seemed a little more steady to me. But it didn't have as many fantastic songs as Rainbow did.

Anyways, I do think E=MC2 will be better than Emancipation, so at least she's going up slightly in my book. Still, it isn't what I would like her to be doing, but I'll always love the woman at the very least for what she did in her past.

Haha, now you've got me listening to her music again

lol, Whenever a new album comes out I always go back and listen to all of her stuff again. And it always makes me realize that Butterfly is the best. The whole album was very melancholy, and there was only one really upbeat track. "The Roof" and "Breakdown" are genius, especially. Loved the Mobb Deep sample and the Bone Thugz guest appearance. Okay, just for the heck of it...

01. Butterfly
02. Mariah Carey
03. The Emancipation of Mimi
04. Emotions
05. Music Box
06. Glitter
<Merry Christmas >
07. Daydream
08. Rainbow
09. Charmbracelet

Just out of curiosity, do the people who claim to like "old Mariah" even like stuff from her first two CDs? I find that a lot of people say they liked her better in the 90s, but they can't name a single song before 1993.

Well basically all of Mariah in the 90's was pretty good to me, but some of her songs pre-93 were fantastic. Vision of Love, Emotions (which is forever great for the super high notes toward the end), I Don't Wanna Cry, Love Takes Time, Someday, and I'll Be There are all favorites of mine.

I think when most people say they liked the old Mariah though, they mean anything before Rainbow and #1's. I think Always Be My Baby, Hero, My All, etc. may be what most people like the best, but then again I can't read their minds.

Glitter might not be considered an official original album in her discography, since it's also technically the soundtrack to the infamous movie.

I personally prefer newer mariah. I think EOM is her best album yet, most of her albums clearly have the hits & the fillers whereas EOM has just quality tracks all the way.

I'm really excited for her new album. I'd buy it right away, but I'm probably going to download it & wait to see if there's a deluxe reissue to buy lol

I don't think any of the current vocalists come close to Mariah. I think most people only focus on the belting type of singing ,tho I admit Mariah can't belt anymore like she used to she's still the best. but Mariah also excels in the lowers registers, sounding silky & smooth. and naturally there's her trademark of instantly going from high to low register. not to mention the famous whistle range ...

I've yet to see any of these people hailed as the "new mariah" to pull of anything like this. Leona and etc are good singers but they aren't MC

Vision of Love has been in my top 3 of Mariah songs ever since I first heard it, even as the other two have changed, so I do like some of her very early stuff.

Preferring old/new Mariah: it's pretty much the same for me, except I now like her songs for different reasons. I don't think she's ever had an album I loved the whole way through, but with the 90s stuff and Emancipation there are usually at least a few songs I really like - then the beautiful ballads, now quality R&B.

I loved her first album. I loved all the singles and Prisoner of Love is one of my favorite Mariah songs

If I had to rank her albums, I'd say...

1. Butterfly
2. Mariah Carey
3. The Emancipation of Mimi
< The Remixes >
4. Daydream
5. Charmbracelet
6. Music Box
7. Glitter
8. Rainbow
9. Emotions

The memories I associate with her music (particularly "Butterfly") are why I still loyally buy her albums even if I don't care for the direction they go in. "Mimi" and this new one appear to signal a return to form, though.

Mariah always lipsynchs on Euro/Asian TV shows (a long time ago she said that they asked her to...not sure what that's all about), so this is basically the CD track.

I never get why she lip-synchs at shows in Europe. But anyway, the song is okay... it sounds really ghetto tho. Like, poorly produced.
