for some reason I doubt it will be released on November 17th ... it is already November 8th and there is not a single promo for her new material.

most probably
![]() however, I wonder when her new album will be released, it has been already reported she had finished it one and a half / two years ago. Once finally released, it might sound outdated if she is going to postpone and postpone till ....forever.

Ok, so, it's official : her new album is called Naked Truth and will contain 10 songs !
It's a gift to herself and her fans, a new tour is also scheduled. This album might be her last. That doesn't mean she will retire, she will focus in the future on releasing singles. She's working hard at the moment with digital platforms and publishers to release her album soon (according to an article I just read it will be released before the middle of next year). The real reason behind her "hiatus" has also been revealed: back then when she was preparing her album, she was flying back and forth a lot to the US. She ended up having headaches and vomiting often which damaged her vocal cords. Then her mental state deteriorated and she went into depression...

Oh goodness
![]() I guess if it's time, it's time. People have always seen her as a fashion genius, so maybe she'll get her own label or move into cosmetics or perfume more aggressively. She certainly has the image to brand her own fashion, cosmetics, perfume, lifestyle products. I just hope Elva is the only one slowing down for now. I'd miss Jolin, but I'll be absolutely devastated if aMEI decides to retire or leave music at this point.

Articles are saying that by doing this "she's following the current trend of the music industry". Especially in China, singers barely release albums, or it's one in a billion years. It's like EPs and mostly singles everywhere. I'm more into albums, so I find it a bit sad too. https://www.facebook.com/love.elva/v...77534756212451 Elva released a video a few hours ago on her FB account (at midnight Taiwan time, Nov. 17th is the day of her 20th anniversary). She confirmed that Naked Truth will most likely be her last full album*, she will consider releasing only singles in the future. The Tour is also confirmed. She's thanking her fans, relatives, family and friends for their support during her hard times in the last few years. *Since she stated "full album", maybe we can hope for EPs...

But still, Yisa Yu, Stef Sun, Tanya Chua, even Sandy Lam... I just can't imagine them moving to this singles/EP market. Especially Stef. Since her return in 2011, she's just completely shook me with It's Time, Kepler, and then Dancing Van Gogh... Her work really is around the album. Same with aMEI. I discovered her in 2014 with FOP... and everything she's done since then has been a top song or album. I still can't get over Story Thief... It's one of the most beautiful records I've ever listened to. If Elva goes that route, I just want to see the energy again. Elva is someone I have to watch AND listen to. She just brings so much presence as a performer.

Stef Sun is currently on hiatus / maternity leave, she said she is going to take a longer break from the industry when she was releasing A Dancing Van Gogh album. Just FYI, if you are not aware of this ![]() But I think there is still a room for albums ... just not for physical releases. Even Jolin was thinking about releasing UGLY BEAUTY only digitally before it was released. I guess (and this is simply my guess) the record company persuaded her to release it physically, but I think UGLY BEAUTY will be her last physical album. If another one will be released physically, only in limited copies or only vinyl copy for collectors. But I even doubt that considering the fact she is usually appealing to younger audience. I cannot see Amei go only for EPs as well, she is truly an artist releasing concept albums (and then receiving many prizes for her work). I don't really think it matters if you have released 2 or 15 albums at this point. It is all about popularity. Once your music is doing well, you can still be releasing albums without much worries. Especially, if those albums are supported by tours, there is huge money in that. In mainland China, physical releases were never a big thing, and now market is completely dominated by digital services offering you a new music and it works more than great there (again if your releases are supported by concerts). There are many new artists/groups that have been formed in recent years/months in China and if you are visiting chinese music forums, you can find a new album almost every day. I think it is just Taiwan (and partly Hong Kong) where physical albums are still pressed, sold and bought but that market will go through similar change as mainland China in upcoming years. It is basically inevitable, but that's not because of music not being sold, it is just pointless at this point to focus on physical releases. To be honest, I am quite old-school-type-of-guy when it comes to music albums (and even movies). I like to touch CDs in my hands, go through the booklet ... but all the albums I bought in the last couple of years, I have never played them even once because of the very simple reason, there is nowhere to play it in my house. I don't own a stereo anymore (the old one broke and I couldn't see point buying a new one), there is no CD player in my car, and even my gaming laptop doesn't have CD-Rom. So even me, who was saying I will always buy albums, is not buying albums physically anymore. And believe me if you would know me, you would have said that I am going to be the last one ![]() But that doesn't mean there is no room for new music, people just don't consume it through CDs, cassettes, USBs anymore, everything is digital (digital music markets, Spotify, YouTube - or chinese equivalents of these services). I even read some kind of statistic few months back (if I remember correctly, done by Forbes), that artists are not making less money nowadays, quite opposite, it is just money are not made by selling your music, but by supporting activities such as tours and concerts (mostly), putting your MVs on YouTube, being listened to on Spotify etc. So overall, I don't really think the era of albums is over (I can simply name you 300 albums released in China this year), it is just physical releases that are becoming redundant, or as in mainland China already became redundant. But I couldn't notice much changes in mainland China music market just because they are not releasing music physically. ![]()

I expect long breaks from artists like Sandy and Stef. But, as funny as this may sound, I actually didn't know Sandy retired. I noticed the thematic work of beginnings and endings on 0, but just went back and saw it was announced. Well... breathe in... breathe out... right? I got to be around for Gaia and 0. Thankful for that.
It always surprises me when singers like WeiWei say they've had 200 million sold in mainland, because I have no clue how they'd even track that down. Anyway, I hope this works out better for Elva. I'd love to see her try on different sounds in the singles/EP market, maybe take a more artistic approach on some releases.

![]() On the one hand, there are many artists that had retired and after many years just came back and start releasing albums again, so it is never a big thing for me (unless it is Namie Amuro who made it more than clear that she is going to retire forever). On the other hand, Sandy is 53 y.o., so it is kind of expected to see such artists to retire. These older artists already gave us 30+ years of active career, so retirement is more than deserved. ![]() btw I also became a fan of Sandy only when Gaia album was released back in 2012. I have been noticing her music before, of course, since she is a huge star, but except a few hits, I was never into her music. It has changed only with Gaia that literally blew my mind (and ears). And with "0", she only confirmed the quality of her new music. So yeah, it is a little bit pity she is retiring now when her music took such significant change, but ... what we can do ![]() Quote:
I am still kind of suspicious it might be a made-up number to make her big for Olympics. I hope so .. however, I would not expect any different/new sounds from her, to be honest. Even if I love her, let's be honest here, she was never a very conceptual artists trying new sounds. She is not like Jolin. Her albums are good, but they are just following the current trends. She is a pop singer making pop songs appealing to the current era (it has been like that since her very first album till Shut Up and Kiss Me), so to expect anything more from her at this point of her career, ergh, I have my doubts. I don't think she is even trying to make anything more "artistic" rather than just a good pop music.
