ayu vob pvs vs. avi pvs

i'm sure everyone knows about the popular tracker from jpopsuki.com and the Ayu HQ PVs in the ahsforum. so, what are the differences of the two types (.avi vs. .vob)?

i've never seen any vobs appear in any ayu forums but i have seen vob torrents for ayu's pvs at jpopsuki. are they like the same? or are the vobs better than the ones that can be found here?

The .vobs are the DVD files

The .avi files are the regular videos after conversion and shtuff.

Hope I got that right.

And believe me, there IS a difference between the two as in quality. Atleast there should...

If the AVI were encoded nicely, both quality differences will not really visible.

Not to mention the aweful filesize of .vobs. But Chris is right, if the avi were encoded well there wouldn't be a huge difference.

There's lots of ghosting and crap that can be really noticeable, even with the newer codecs at high quality ^^. But in general, it's not very noiceable, nor is the size very much different if that's the case.

Like has been said, VOB is the original DVD files, it's as high quality as you can find the PVs. But many of the VOBs at JPS are ripped from DVDs that has been shrinked, so not many of them are the original quality.

Shrinked?... what exact procedure do you mean?... I don't think I've heard of 'compressing' DVDs or such...

.vob files are simply the DVD quality, which is high quality mpeg video.
.avi files are original DVD quality videos encoded/compressed using DivX/XviD codecs to reduce their file size without too much of noticeable image quality loss.

Difference between image quality of DVD video and DivX/XviD or such is usually always noticeable if you take a closer look at the image. You can make it almost barely distinguishable if you choose lower compression rate when converting DVD to AVI, but then the file size goes higher...

Depends on the original PV itself. I have D.D.D. feat. SOULHEAD by Koda Kumi that is at 20++ MB but the quality is almost the same with the one on my DVD. So basically, if the PV colors & contrast are high, much likely it will result in BIG size and vice versa.

then, are the videos provided at ahs' HQ PV files the highest possible .avi? i guess so...

so, is it soooooooooo good that the quality is practically the same as the .vobs that can be found at jps?

You should look into an application called "DVDShrink".

They might not have to be. The highest quality AVI file would need to have a 99% or even 100% quality factor, but that would probably result in the AVI file being almost the same size as the .vob file.

I rather like the vob files myself, since you can burn those straight to DVD without waiting for encoding, and since I prefer to watch stuff on my TV as opposed to my computer, that's the preferable download for me personally.

But the quality difference isn't that much if you're just gonna watch them on the computer, really. You CAN see a difference if you burn the AVI files to a dvd and watch them on tv though, even if it's a good encoding.

I would find it easier to see the difference between .vob and .avi when playing it on the computer rather than when playing it on TV. Regular TVs make digital signal appear kinda smoothed, while LCD displays, due to their specifics, the contrast, reveal all the flaws of the image.

I think it's a post-conversion thing then... cuz my "Moments" pv looks fine on the computer, absolutely perfect. But once I wrote it to DVD and watched it on TV the quality went down considerably. I usually skip it on my dvd now

No, it was a divx avi. I think it's the one I got from the HQ pv's thread here, but I'm not sure. But everything else on the DVD i made was converted to DVD from AVI also, and they look fine for the most part.

Did you burn it as a DVD video or do your DVD player support divx?
