Very surprised to see she's having a duet with Anitta. I'm not excited about that song and I'm most likely still going to be disappointed. ![]() |

I was wondering what direction madonna would take her music as every album she tries something somewhat new, so I think contemporary Latin music will be a fresh approach. That being said, Medellin is uninteresting and forgettable. Still hopeful for the rest of the album.
I don't like the standard cover but the deluxe album cover is awesome. |

I too find the song pretty boring and I only made it half through it when I listened to it a few days ago. Overall I like the video, but this Maluma guy is so unlikeable somehow...
Nonetheless, I'm curious what will follow and this seems like a very interesting concept album! |

What's awkward is I can't tell if it's the recent politics of America or Madonna herself that makes me look at the lyrics, her pronunciation of the Spanish language, the idea of Madonna teaching cha cha to a room of Colombians... with a weird feeling of "white people luxuriating Latin culture". I normally don't sign on to the "cultural appropriation" stuff, but this just feels like Madonna basically telling her team, "I want to do Latino for my new album." I really hope she does fado justice here. Fado is an extremely unique part of Portuguese culture, and with a first single that sounds like Sia trying to write a Shakira song, I'm a little worried that Madonna will basically rub her crotch on a guitar while mouthing sad lyrics and that will be her idea of "fado influence". I'm glad Mirwais is working with her again. I loved American Life. But I'm also a bit confused about the absence of Portuguese and Latin producers on an album supposedly heavily-influenced by Portuguese and Latin culture. I'm not sure if Madonna really knows what she's doing here. And to be honest, after Hard Candy, MDNA, and Rebel Heart, I don't have a lot of confidence in Madge pulling off the concepts as effectively as she once did with records like Confessions and Ray of Light.

The video is very nice but didn't make me enjoy the song any better. Maluma looks really attractive, though...

The song is nothing special and the bed scenes were awkward to watch! As orbitalaspect said, they feel very try hard.
The album itself sounds interesting (concept wise) and I'm curious how it'll turn out, but Medellin didn't really get me hyped, tbh.

She's trying to cash in on controversial politics just like American Life. The song was bad and this theme it's very offensive.
She's needs to spend less time stealing making crappy imitation latin music, and fix the situation with the fillers in her face |

^ I Rise is fantastic and should have been the first single instead of that disaster called Medellín.

Yeaaaa... I'm sure the intent was good, but every time she sings "I riiiiiisseee up above it, up above it", I'm just imagining these kids after a school shooting telling themselves "This whole school massacre shit is beneath me." Um... Madonna, hon... Don't commercialize a teenage school shooting survivor's speech begging for legal intervention that could have prevented her and her peers from having to witness another kid mowing down people in the hall with a semi-automatic sporting rifle.

^agree. Song in itself is way better than Medellin but commercialising a school shooting is just no. Lyrics aren't controversial and nothing she has to worry about to be criticised about by people who are anti gun law reform. As long as Madonna isn't using her plattform and influence to advocate for a gun law reform in general I find this lacking in respect.

Have you heard? So, apparantly Madonna sung on Euro Song Vision (y tho) and she is getting a lot of backlash for it. I have kinda missed it, not important -- but I was a bit tipsy at the time and only remembered the bar singing along with Like A Prayer. I couldn't pay attention to the details.
But everybody is talking about how awful it was. Especially her vocals. Well was it? I have watched her performing Future back on YouTube, and must say it is incredibly dumb of her going all political and operating like some kind of peace-maker pirate between Israel and Palestina. And then telling everybody to wake up? In Israel for goodness sake... but I have seen worse things tho. What were your thoughts on the whole performance? Did she deserve the backlash or did she come off pretty easy?

^I watched it live and she was okay for the first few seconds of Like A Prayer but then she started singing out of tune and it stayed that way. She also souded very out of breath from just walking down the stairs. Honestly, I can get why she got so much backlash since her live vocals weren't good and the performance's concept didn't save much. She was paid a lot too apparently and she got hyped up the whole night. I do think it is exaggerated to say that it ended her career like, yes it was bad but who knows what went wrong. It can happen but she simply did not deliver (vocally and performance wise) so people reacted a certain way. She just sounded very weak and if it's age then oh well.. If it was something else then one can only hope that future performances will sound better.
The masks were quite tasteless in my opinion, such as the whole political statement thing. The ESC didn't allow the contestants to make such since it's supposed to be more about the songs and fun. But then again, that's Madonna. They edited/used a different audio for the performance on YouTube (it has some obvious autotune) and I honestly don't have a problem with that but after 200 million people hearing the live vocals, it wouldn't surprise me if this is the next thing they laugh at. Edit: they delete many other videos of the un-edited performance but here you can check parts of Like A Prayer. https://youtu.be/Arq5XQXuI98 https://youtu.be/FVyyZZV0UPk
