It just seems really lazy to me if the lyrics are bad, but I can tolerate it if the music is awesome.

I say other, because for me it depends on the artist. My favourite artists have always beautiful and meaningful lyrics, but I also like other artists with not that meaningful lyrics.

The second last option applies to me 99.9% percent of the time when I listen to music. But sometimes I just like to party. For that, I usually go wild with corny 90's techno and catchy tunes with dumb lyrics. Different types of music for different types of moods.

Yes. A song without meaningful lyrics seems to be tasteless to me.

I would not say "tasteless", but I'm just not interested in songs that have cheesy lyrics or go "Boom Boom" the whole time. That's also the reason why I haven't listened to the radio in like years. I'm not interested in this music, because it sounds so meaningless to me.

But that doesn't mean that mainstream-music can't have great lyrics. Ayu - for example - is pretty mainstream, but (most of) her lyrics have a deep and powerful meaning.

So yes, lyrics are definitely most important to me!

It's the most important thing in a song. I can tolerate senseless music if it's in the background, but if it has no meaning it can't really be called art.

It depends on the artist, the song, my mood. There are times when I want a song that conveys a certain emotion, happiness, love, sadness, darkness, something abstract and the lyrics do play a part in that for me. There are other times when I wanna booty-pop, and I wanna just DANCE. Then, I want shallow lyrics, not something preachy. That's why I can appreciate all kinds of artists. I need variety in my music. I don't feel "deep" all the time, but I don't just want to booty-pop all the time either.

PS: I'm not just talking about J-Pop.

I generally prefer meaningful songs, but I can go either way. If the lyrics are not meaningful, then it better sound good.

American Music: Yes lyrics matter to me definitely but if a song has an infectious beat, I can't resist. My favorite English artists, on the other hand, have very well written lyrics and their music compositions are just astounding . (examples: Stevie Wonder, John Mayer, Mariah Carey(1990-1996), etc.)

Japanese Music: Just like with American music, It depends. I may not be completely fluent in the Japanese language, but I can tell when a Japanese song has sub-standard(vs)phenomenal lyrics.

At the end of the day it's the composition of a song draws me initially. Not the lyrics. So I choose the first option. "Depends on the song".

I only care for meaningful lyrics in a ballad, or maybe a jazz song.
But even if a pop song has meaningful lyrics, I'm okay with that. Just look at Ayu's songs...

Depends on the song...but how can a song be meaningful without lyrics? I guess I can see it, but hmm.
