Yeah I got mine extremely early (well maybe 3 months advance) and it was only like $1600 and included 4/5 night stay at the Hotel Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku hotel. That was in 2008. I used travelocity.

Well, I dunno for sure, but every time I've looked, it's a bit cheaper (like $200-400) like 2 weeks or so in advance.

That's true. But it's risky around busier periods, like summer, Christmas, etc.

If you plan on late July, buy tickets in May. You can save over $1000. I ended buying my tickets only 3 weeks in advance in 2010 for $1300, but if I would have hd the money saved in May it would have only been $800. That was for roundtrip through Seattle - Vancouver - Tokyo on JAL. There are also airlines much cheaper than JAL. DELTA I think was the cheapest at that time.

I went to Tokyo in july 2010 too and I bought tickets in....January! 6 months in advance and thanks to, prices were really interesting for me. 1600 euros (2000$) for 7 days/6nights all inclusive of course (trip from airport to hotel, aiplane, the luxury hotel in Shinagawa....). Well I think the better is to buy tickets early in advance. This trip asks preparation but it's my opinion! Oh Departure was from France-Tokyo (direct airplane)

Err generally the closer you buy to the date the more expensive the tickets are.

Look to budget airlines that fly to Japan - and wait for a sale. Always wait for a sale - check out the trends they have with sales, what periods they cover. Generally July is a peak season for travel so finding a good deal will be harder.

I'm planning to see a June/July show as well, if not one of the October shows she usually does. But most likely will be there for a summer show. Finally will see Ayumi and Japan this year. No ifs, no buts, ITS HAPPENING.

I went to see Ayu in October 2009, I bought my ticket in April. It was the best deal I'd ever seen, 950$CAD for a round trip ticket. Normally they go for 1,200-1,500$!!

So it really depends on the season you're going, from where your departing, where you're landing, etc. I would advice against waiting at the last minute, just keep looking every other day if not every day, you don't really have anything to loose by starting your search early on. Worse comes to worse you'll just buy a ticket later rather than sooner...

I noticed summer and Christmas holidays are the busiest. I'm planning to attend CDL12-13 so I'll probably be looking at tickets in June to get a heads up.

Closer to the actual date, airlines are more keen to fill up all the seats so if you look a week before you're likely to get a better deal.

I don't know why flights are so expensive in America

how do you check for a sale? Do you mean through something like travelocity? or expedia? or the actual airline??

Thanks for all the help!!

I use the all-in-one booking sites too, I feel like they help save money.

Expedia, Travelocity, Priceline, etc.

I priced out flight+hotel, same duration, for next week, and then for July, which is in 6 months. Surprisingly, the flight for July is a LOT more expensive! Why is that?! Both packages are for departure on a Monday and a return on a Friday. Hmmmm...

Flying to Japan has gotten so expensive in the past couple of years... When I went to Japan in 08 and 09 (both times I got there in June and left in July), my tickets were roughly $800USD. Lately, they've jumped up to waaayyyy past $1000 in those times! I also thought I saw somewhere something about new flying laws or whatnot... Not sure what was talked about, but I think it has something to do with new international flying taxes.

I hope Ayu has dates in April, like she has been these past few years. I planned on visiting Japan again in April, but if I have to go later, that's okay! (It gives me more time to save, ha!) I'm very much anticipating the dates to be revealed!

You could sort of find a loophole if you were going to use JAL. Instead of just clicking round trip or whatever, click the option that says multi-city. You get the same airports and what not and tickets are like $200-$300 cheaper. Sometimes more, sometimes less. In 2009, I went during summer in June, and bought tickets, I think two months out? It was $674 round trip.
