masa,
"I have just one wish" is fine, I went with "I have only one wish"... Thanks for explaining setsunai, I know the feeling you are describing, but can't find a good word for it in english, as you said... most english words meaning sad have a negative connotation, as no-one likes being sad...? Doesn't mean we can't like sad songs or movies though...and some people like them because the sadness shows the romance of the story.... So in the song, when she is saying setsunaku te, is she happy that she was? or miserable that she was? or kind of a combination? (happy that she loves him enough to be so sad....?) sorry for being a pain!!

Thanks, ImpactBreaker.
I corrected my mistake and changed these parts. for ever --> forever I have just one and only wish --> I have only one wish Also, I changed the line order of this part. If I just think of you My heart has the meaning to live >So in the song, when she is saying setsunaku te, is she happy that she was? or miserable that she was? or kind of a combination? She is neither happy nor miserable. She is sad. But this includes a kind of intimate feeling. Hard to explain. I think "kanashii" is the word just corresponding to "sad" . I wonder if 'setsunai' can be translated to bittersweet?

Setsunaku te setsunaku te
Mune ga gyu tto naru yoru mo Tashika ni ne aru keredo Supposing this line is "Kanashiku te kanashiku te", she (the narrator) is all depressed and almost in despair. But with "Setsunaku te setsunaku te", she can still expect several things, such as meeting him, talking with him and staying together with him, though her love may not be accepted fully by him. Do you understand? |

Is she missing him?
Could it be translated as "missing you" or something? I guess that is a word that doesn't really have a good english equivalent.

I found this over some website:
Quote:
http://mayumik.seesaa.net/archives/200707-1.html I guess "wistful" or "wistfully" would be a good word to translate it? It's my first time hearing that word though, since I'm not an english native. Quote:

yeah thanks masa, I think I understand now, just can't find the right expression in english,
"missing" isn't quite right. so, it's more like, she loves him so much, and gets to spend a lot of time with him, but more as a friend as he doesn't love her back. so she loves being with him, but has this sadness/pain/longing because he doesn't love her back. It's classic unrequited love.... you want to be with them, but the fact that they don't return your love is a constant source of sadness and pain. But you'd still rather be with them and suffer, than not be with them at all. I still can't think of a word to capture this kind of feeling....it'd have to be a sentence....:/ EDIT: Impactbreaker!!!! I think you've got it. I do know this word, but didn't think of it until you said it! I think it's almost perfect... BUT, it doesn't go very well into the translation. (FYI, Wistful describes the person who is feeling it, not the situation....you cannot say "this song is wistful"...) if we used wistfully, wistfully, it might work....but because this word is a bit uncommon, and maybe a little bit flowery and poetic, it sounds a bit strange in the song.... but still, I think it's better than what we have so far. more links 1

Well, it might be a good idea to use "miss" in this case.
How about this? Though it's true I spend some nights Missing you, missing you And feeling a tightning in my chest |

Hahaha 'wistfully' seems to be the most accurate translation for 'setsunakute'! But like what jon_the_d said... it really seems very bombastic and flowery... and I don't really know if missing is an appropriate translation, because in this context, the meaning of 'setsunakute' is exactly what jon_the_d said...

yeah, I don't think missing conveys the right message at all. and it doesn't even make sense if she does actually get to see him...
also, I'd still insist on having the repetition as the first line of that verse, to match the japanese song, it makes a lot of difference when you're following the song whilst reading the translation. or when the translation is used to sub the video... it has to match!!!! >.<

@ ^: Haha, I agree. XD
Hmm, it's better now. ^^ But I'd still change the word order so that "feeling so sad, so sad" matches setsunaku te setsunaku te and not the second line of lyrics. Like jon_the_d says. It only makes it more accurate. ^^ So this: Though it's true I spend some nights Feeling so sad, so sad And feeling a tightning in my chest >>> Feeling so sad, so sad And feeling a tightning in my chest It's true I spend some nights like that Or something like that. That word order would match the Japanese lyrics more, don't you think? Also, where does the "though" come from? Last edited by Melrose; 7th December 2008 at 01:34 PM. |

Can't a synonym be used for wistful? http://www.synonym.com/synonyms/wistful/
Actually "sad" figures here as a synonym for wistful... Translating is such a complicated thing... Last edited by Linoa62; 7th December 2008 at 01:53 PM. |

I looked up "wistful" in a dictionary. But it seems this word doesn't have enough nuance of sad and lonely feeling. I think "miss" is more loyal to "setsunai" than "wistful" in this case.

setsunai to me has some kind of pain attached.
Like, it's not sad in the sense so depressing, but it's really heavy on your heart. I dont really cant explain in english... It's frustrating(?) and sort of painful. It's like a feeling like you can't do anything about it. setsunai and natsukashii are often a pair. Natsukashii is nostalgic feelings. and kanashii is just plain sad... I dont feel like a pain in it. Like your heart will explode or so... www You can say kanashii when someone just takes your lollipop.. Or if the rain is coming down. etc. setsunai is more.. a hurting feeling in the chest. At least to me. |
