You are welcome.
There is one thing on which I'd like to hear your oipnions. Even if all the anger continuing to take root in this world Can't be calmed The Japanese word "tomeru" is usually translated into "stop". But I couldn't find any example sentences including "stop the anger" in the online dictionary, so I used "calm". But if it's no problem to use "stop" as below, I think it's closer to the original lyrics. How do you think? Even if all the anger continuing to take root in this world Can't be stopped |

I personally think "calmed" is far more poetic than "stopped" because you don't stop being angry, you lose your anger by being calmed. I personally think you should leave it as "calmed" Masa. It's something that makes complete sense in English as well as being more of the opposite of anger than just to stop it. Does that makes sense? Really, to me, "calmed" just reads as so much more meaningful than "stopped".

Let me confirm one thing.
She is not saying that we can't stop (calm) our own anger, but that we can't stop (calm) other people's anger completely. And in my interpretation, this is the anger that causes racial discrimination, conflict, war, terrorism, etc. in the world. Last edited by masa; 10th April 2010 at 07:29 AM. |

Wow, just...wow. Very beautiful and poignant lyrics! I can't wait to listen to the song, I hope the music does it justice. It's rather reminiscent of A song is born huh?
I agree with Nessa, "calmed" just sounds more...poetic (?) Can't describe it, but I prefer it over "stopped"

Quote:
ETA: Masa, might I suggest "soothed" in place of both calmed AND stopped? Soothed means the same thing as calmed, but it sort of implies something more poetic and gentle -- http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/soothed To soothe is usually associated with one person soothing another person, which ties in with what you said about Ayu talking about stopping someone else's anger.

Hm, I looked up "to soothe / soothed" and it's なだめる / 和らげる in Japanese, hm...
I think "stopped" would be best since that's what she actually said in her lyrics (止められ), so it'll be up to whoever's reading to interpret it as soothing/calming the anger of the world, you know? I sort of would rather like to have translations that pretty much say exactly what Ayu's trying to tell us so that what she's saying doesn't get lost/mixed up in the process of translating.

Yes. "Stop" is stronger than "soothe" or "calm". I change the word from "calm" to "stop". Thank you.
