as much as I like TWINS (because of their acting mostly lol .. even if they aren't that good) they can't sing ... but their songs are so damn catchy and I think that's one reason for them being as big as they are

lol, that is true; people in hk are getting famous mostly because they got the looks. but now singers arent just singers anymore. people that sing are dragged into the acting business as well so maybe they get famous by acting. i dunno, i dont even know that i am saying O.O

I completely agree with you. I've been pondering for quite some time about this myself. Some Hong Kong people just can't sing. -__-;; I'm not saying I'm any better but they shouldn't be on stage. It's rather disappointing. My mom thinks TWINS are retarded XDD

The same thing happens in Japan, you just don't notice it. Hundreds of untalented idols with weak voices and terrible music come out in Japan every year.

Most people who adopt your opinion aren't very aware of HK music and they draw conclusions immediately. Alot actually like untalented artists themselves, only that they're Japanese.

For every bad singer you can name, I can name a good one.

Wilfred Lau, Ella Koon, Fiona Sit, Jade Kwan, at17, Maggie Fu, Pong Nan, Chet Lam, GarLum, Jolie Chan are just some of the talented artists in recent years, some with very good live singing, and others such as Pong Nan, Chet Lam, at17 and Maggie Fu being composer/song writers also.

And Deep is actually a pretty good live singer. Ayumi however......

Haha, Hong Kong music industry pretty much died with Faye.. since the mid 90s, there hasn't been anything interesting there.

It really is a disaster nowadays. I remember back in the days, I would be watching a live performance and hope that someone would sing off key, so I could have a laugh, but nowadays, it's bingo every single performance and just not funny anymore :laugh

It's beg to differ when you say that for every bad singer there is a good one. I don't think Hong Kong singers pass mediocre level. Maybe 2 or 3, but that's really it. People just can't sing nowadays. Plus, those who can sing are most often shadowed by those who cannot sing. The most popular (e.g. Joey Yung, Twins, 2R, Boy'Z, etc) dominate the whole industry. And people who truely have talent (e.g. HoCC) have no chance in succeeding, because they don't have the "support".

I don't think we'll ever relive the glorious old days, when people truely could sing, and talent equals succes.

And the MV's: 4 words: Low Quality and Cheap.

That's not true. She's rapidly on the rise after more exposure from hosting JSG and having an image change. She's now one of the top 5 most popular female artist.

lol, Canto-POP isn't ALL trash. There are a few good talented artists out there, but the majority of them can't really perform.

I used to like Twins a lot but they're really just losing it now, like, some tracks off Magic onwards period. I try to keep up with other ones like Kelly, Jade and Joey but it's all too much, and more and more are coming out these days.

Basically, for the HK Music Industry, I go by this rule: If you look pretty, you're in. If you can't sing, we'll teach you. If you can't act, we'll help you. Simple as that. :P

Id have to say Joey Yung is one of the Best HK singers :love , she seems to be the only one that can sing in tune during a live concert as I have been to one, and I dont think its just because of her looks she get record deal.

But I do agree that a majority cannot sing properly. Twins and Boy'z more based on their looks than singing, during live performance very outta tune and flat and boring... :irked

Then it must have been a very special concert. The once I saw, was extreme out of tone, and to make matters worse, she tried to play the flute, only she was too exausted to play it. Humiliating. I would almost rate it as *fatality*, excuse me, *F A T A L I T Y*. Imo, she is one of the worst.

True, she is on the rise, but still *far* behind on Joey, Miriam, Twins, etc. But I don't think she will ever make it to the top (i.e. most sales award) with the music she's creating, which in my opinion is very good, but to the average HK buyer is bad.

I have been listening to the latest cantopop in a while so I don't really know who's talented or not but I know enough to say that singers like Twins and Boy'z cannot sing. They're not even that pretty or good looking either. Oh and I really don't like boy bands that dance *coughs*Boy'z*coughs* :rolleyes

It's true. The company is called Emperor Group and it's CEO is called Yeung Sau Shing, who is said to be involved in heavy crime and triad business. And after Joey Yung went to a hotel with him, she suddenly got famous. And Yumiko is indeed with the same record label, but I don't know anything about her relationship with the boss.

Hong Kong music business is all about "support". and that support most often, if not always, means criminals and triads. Just look at Juno, he looks like a monkey, he sings like.... I don't even know how to express it... But his father buys, literaly buys, fans for him. $200 to scream his name, $300 to carry his banner, $400 to chase his car...

The whole hongkong showbiz industry is controlled by triads, and I think everyone knows it, and those who deny it, are just fooling themselves. You can see how much "support" Joey Yung has. Once, there was this tv show, i think it was EYT, and there was this small time guy, who was very good at imitating people, and he imitated, and of cource ridiculed, after all, it's an entertainment show, Joey Yung. Not long after, he was assaulted by Emperor's henchmen.

You're definitely not alone in this! I agreed with everything you have said. I'm from Hong Kong by the way and i am so tired of people like Twins, Boyz, Edison, Cookies etc.!! They cannot sing, and they're very famous. When you look at them, you would think "Hey they're very good looking, i'll buy their CDs" And after you listened to the whole CD, you would really want to complain to the company. Most of the new artists DO NOT write or compose ANY of their songs, they don't even try.

One good point my friend told me some time ago, she told me MOST of the hong kong singers were MODELS. You get the point? The companies hired them not because of their singing skills, rather because of their looks! Just listen to Edison. OMG, he cant' even speak CANTONESE when he came out and he released like album after album. Just because he's good looking and is RICH, he gets to do things that many other talented people deserves to. That's why i resort to listen to Japanese songs, most of the HK people don't know..how to sing at all. There are a few HK oldies who are still out there who i acknowledged to be REAL singers. They are Miriam Yung, Kelly Cheng, GiGi Leung, Faye Wong of course.

Eh... a reason why that some of the singers in Asia don't exactly 'grow up' to become adults/sound like adults/dress like them.. is because cuteness (I don't know if it exists in China, but it sure does in Japan.. the typical high pitched voice and good manners, etc such thing) is considered good. I can't stand listening to singers with voices that are sugar coated.. I admit that I don't really listen to a lot of Ayumi's old stuff because some of her songs kind of blew my ear drum out on several occasions.. :laugh but it does get annoying listening to people with those kind of voices.. :rolleyes

Oh, someone else has heard of them. I'm surprised, I really like their stuff. 'Chet Lam', 'My little airport' and 'at17' has some nice chill music too.

I must say, most of the new HK or Taiwan artist is CRAP. They are most likely to be popular because they are cute, pretty or hot. And they have other offer (acting) because they are popular. Best example? Twins. They play in a tons of chinese movie but yet, they have no acting skills. They have no talent whatsoever when it comes to songwritting and vocally either. The new artists right now are just, not good. Plus, they lip synch. Ew.

I love older Chinese songs, so much better. (From artist that have been out there for long. (Andy Lau, Kelly Chen and other...) Not some talentless teen.) The new chinese artist suck. My mom think so too. She's always "Where the hell did all those teen artist came out? Their music is so bad." HAHA, i love my mom!

Personally, i'm 15 and i prefer those older chinese songs. The ones that everybody knows. The classics. Those are amazing.

I think it was aimed to me. but the logic of it escapes me.

First, bates, lets get 1 thing straight; If I would like to insult Ayumi, I would do it openly, as I am not a person afraid of "causing uproar", and, I would do it in the appropiate thread. If I wanted to insult her, you wouldn't even used the word "attempting". you would know it for sure.

Second, I know it's hard to see the *extremely* faint border between "cantopop" and "ayumi", but at least try to find it.

And if it wasn't aimed at me, tough luck

I favor the oldies too. The only "modern" artists I like are Kelly and HoCC. Imo the old songs were composed, written and sung in far superior quality compared to nowadays. Good old days with Anita Mui, Roman, Lesie etc etc.

The older singers in China look like they have a lot of experience and such.. and are well liked. however, with new people coming out, people just look at how pretty they look and when they hear them sing.. it's like OUCH MY FREAKIN ears.. I guess it's.. appearances is what matters in the Chinese singing industry..

Nicolas: He has pretty good songs, but I don't like his attitude (so this is a personal feeling, nothing to do with his qualities, or lack op them). Not much to say about him though.. has no special qualities, nor severe lacking in certain qualities. I guess you could say he's above average.

Jay: I still love his song, QiLiXiang, but most of his song don't appeal me much. he can sing tho.. unlike many others. (On a sidenote: Jay isn't really cantopop. He doesn't sing in cantonese, and is from Taiwan)

LMF: LMF is just funny. I have their album LazyMotherF.., you guys can guss what F stands for. I quite liked them. Not so much anymore, but that's because the only songs I have are like 3 years old.. they're getting worn out. Back in the days when they started to get popular, they shook things quite up in Hong Kong :laugh. People were completely shocked that there could be such thing as non-mainstream :D. This was never seen before. "omg, they use foul language! This is completely bad music". Radiostations try to ban them. From then on, people started to get weird. And I started to see Slipknot and KoRn T-Shirts on the street. weird sight, i guarantee, especially in HongKong, where mediocre mainstream music flourishes like never before.

Jay Chou definitely stands up to his name. He writes and composes MOST of his songs, unlike many of the other chinese artists who doesn't give a damn about writing or composing even one of their songs!
