"Marionette" PV Discussion!

Let's talk about the "Marionette" PV!

I loved...
- The sort of scary vibe of the PV.
- The white eyes were really cool and creepy.
- Ayu looks so so so amazing in the PV. I love the hair more and more.
- I'm so glad there were more scenes than the dancing one. I was afraid there would be nothing more than that scene.
- The dancing was actually good and matched the song, I'm quite surprised.
- I will watch it again! Which is rare when it comes to PVs for me. I usually only watch a PV once. If I watch it again, it really means I like it.

I didn't like...
- Shuya's smile. Ew.

I'm not sure what the ending means...

thinkingoutloud89 26th December 2007 11:55 PM

I just ...uhm...don´t get it XD ending was weird

Ayumiko 26th December 2007 11:58 PM

I really like this pv...its my fav along with together when... for this album. I love the way ayu looks...her eyes, hair, and outfits. The way she zombie moved was :love. The atmosphere in the pv is great too.

The part where shuya smiled was freaky. He should keep his mouth closed...lol

Beauty4123 26th December 2007 11:59 PM

i liked it. ayumi's eyes creeped me out, lol. but i thought her dress was pretty, the scenes of her in that room or whatever was cool, and i liked when everyone's eyes got back to normal and ayu started singing again. and their group pose at the end was kinda..funny, i guess? lol. i don't get it though, but nice PV.

thinkingoutloud89 27th December 2007 12:00 AM

yeah nice indeed...very cool looking and all and the smile was the best..ayu mostly looked like a doll

stickyrice 27th December 2007 12:01 AM

the ending was funny. It's like finally **** she left. Time to party my puppet friends!!

overall - I really enjoyed the PV. Very dramatic and the eyes were cool. Didn't like the close ups of the dancers from time to time.

austin. ♥ 27th December 2007 12:02 AM

It makes me want to buy contact lenses. I thinking maybe purple. Good promotion,,,

really.

yeah we scared that ***** to hell now we can bring out the alcohol....XD it ruined the whole built up atosphere XD

Bad Wolf 27th December 2007 12:05 AM

I like it a lot, actually. I think the ending (Ayu walking out, the musicbox!Ayu looking around, kinda confused) may represent this: musicbox!Ayu is like this little voice of hope inside the sleeping!Ayu's heart, and when s!Ayu wakes up and listens to mb!Ayu's message, she realizes she has to keep moving on and so just slowly takes those first steps and exits the room. Mb!Ayu, whose purpose is therefore done, is now wondering "Well... what next?" I kind of get the idea that the ending was on a confident note, sort of like they'd broken free, they were able to move again on their own and now they just had to bide their time.

cloud♥honey 27th December 2007 12:09 AM

I can't describe it with words. It's simply amazing. Can't wait for the HQ rip.

KaoriNeko 27th December 2007 12:22 AM

I was legit creeped out. I loved it, but the vibe of the PV and song
made me kind of scared. I can't wait to get my album now. And ayu's been dancing a lot this year, I wonder why?

The PV looked AMAZING.
I can't wait for a better rip though.
I don't know if it was just me or what but the video froze in certain spots for me and the video played slower than the music.

mishidabo 27th December 2007 12:30 AM

the idea of the pv wass really good, but i got bored the first 2/3 of it, the last part was really interesting and my favorite part, but like i said the first 2 parts of the pv are boring and so repetitive :S

BUT, the outfit, the hair, the set, all was very well done

8/10 ( good PV, she has done better ones tho)

ImpactBreaker 27th December 2007 12:30 AM

This is how I interpret this PV:

By reading the lyrics, I think the marionette show represents ayu past relationship. The real ayu is the media+fans eyes to what her life is. In that matter, she pretended her relationship to be beautiful and perfect, to be the role model (the way she's happily portrayed on TV on the PV), but it had flaws. ayu and her lover hid those imperfections by portraying a fake appearance of what it really looked like in order to try to maintain the appearances. This is the reason why "memories" loojk so beautiful, you'll be reminding of the good moments and erase the issues, but her relationship was troubled. In peopple's eyes, they were a perfect couple (reason why everytime the real ayu look at the marionette play, they are all back in their place and shape). It got to a point she was living like a lifeless being, she was not living what she really wanted for her, so she had to put that mask out (when the marionette's eyes becomes real and the strings are broken and she's set free), by admiting their love had flaws and there was more to the "memories" than those fake appearances, the real thing was the love wasn't the same anymore. It explain why she decided to announce her breaking up, despite the fact she was later criticized for ruining the relationship with the "good guy" by some media personalities. However, as she mentioned in past interviews and even on the lyrics, she didn't really care what people would think after that:

"Now, let's stand up without fear
For the sake of no one else

And rip off the masks
With our own hands"

It's interesting how both the song and PV seem to be related to Together When...:

-The PV for Together When... portrays a simillar story, the marionettes theme, the two lovers, the breaking up.
-After Together When... follows Marionette -prelude- and Marionette in sequence on the album GUILTY.

KaoriNeko 27th December 2007 12:49 AM

Poor ayu. If her relationship was that troubled with Tomoya, I wondered why they stayed together for so long.

the angel song 27th December 2007 12:56 AM

I think ayu stayed with Tomoya so long was because she's not a quitter. But you see, it took lots of time until she finally decided to let go, and that's why we got this Together When..., Marionette prelude, Marionette thing on the album. It wasn't a simple process for her, from what she's telling us in song...

This PV was woooow. I have no words. I see the story the same way others did...it's about her inner self telling her to move on, and the real ayu is depressed (wasting away on the couch). The turning point was the storm outside. I loved her outfit, btw! Very chic and the set was awesome. The whole 'Marionette' thing reminds me of Sweeney Todd's look in the movie where it's got a gritty, creepy, victorian vibe. I can't wait till my copy comes in. This is really an awesome album with amazing PVs!

Agreed, whole-heartedly! Especially about the Victorian, Sweeney Todd-esque look to it.

s1012h 27th December 2007 01:07 AM

okay so the ending really confused the crap outta me
but this is her best PV of the year
it's been awhile since we've seen such a dark video

Kogepan_19 27th December 2007 01:10 AM

I really enjoyed this PV...the set, costumes, everything. The song made it even better haha. Only the ending confused me but...oh wells.

darc_aqua 27th December 2007 01:17 AM

^ i agree Shuya's smile killed the mood of the PV

the angel song 27th December 2007 01:23 AM

I think Shuya's smile added a bit more creepiness IMO...it was fitting for his characteristic. And the white eyed glares from the other dancers...*shudders*

Ayumiko 27th December 2007 01:27 AM

I agree....even though his smile is freaky and ugly but it made the pv more creepy..he looked like he could be a serial murderer or something.

MemorialAddress 27th December 2007 01:39 AM

I thought it was great.
Thank god it wasn't another let down like (d)lma lololl
She looked so cute (when the contacts weren't in/when she was in normal clothes) :heart

Qt Mashi 27th December 2007 01:46 AM

omg! finally a PV that's not cliche, stupid or tryhard dancing! it was really kool, time passed pretty quick while i was watching this because so many things were happening.

i love Ayu's hair, looks like a doll too

milky_way 27th December 2007 01:58 AM

I liked the creepiness of the PV, and Ayu looked great.

namiie 27th December 2007 02:23 AM

It was alright. Definitely not her best PV ever but still decent. I really like the direction and feel of the whole PV; the dark house to the wind to the way Ayu was tossing and turning. The whole "oh look we're puppets with scary eyes" bit got old really quickly though. I love the way they came alive though: eyes all broken.

The ending was a little stupid though. Ayu and co. all have this look in their faces like, "Bwahaha, we fooled her." Err, what? Like they HAD to pretend to be puppets and now they're ~alive~? So what? They're still tiny...I think a better ending would've been like this: Ayu leaves the room, closes the door. As she closes the door behind her and looks ahead: WHITE DRESS PUPPET AYU stands right in front of her. Real Ayu looks shocked. Zoom in on real Ayu's eyes, which then become all white and plastic. Real Ayu turns into the marionette; puppet Ayu has broken free. Cliffhanger! Of course, that's just me.

I do like Ayu's sense of style in this PV though. Both the white dress and the brown outfit were nice. And I really am loving that hair.

I actually like your ending better than the one in the PV.

minna 27th December 2007 02:42 AM

what a great PV!!!
I love it !! even if it's really creepy XD
Shuya's smile was so scary! and with those eyes!!! O_O
it added more creepiness !!
when I watched it I was like : hope there is nobody behind me right now XD
no seriously it fits the song perfectly

987654321987 27th December 2007 02:53 AM

best Pv since fairyland!
seriously! good make up+hair (without the which look @ part of me)
excellent story line
good dance moves
extremely dark....
what else are we expecting?

I am so looking forward to her performance of the song @ AT07 i think it wil be a spinning stage with similar dance moves!!! omg..... can't wait

Nu-NRG 27th December 2007 03:03 AM

this along with Together When... is the best for this year
there isn't much of a storyline but the creepiness make up for it :d
I love ayu's dark pv

Cool idea! It could've still worked with the whole 'ayu's inner self waking her up from depression' because that puppet ayu could've been the 'ayu that broke free' in a literal sense AND add to the creepy factor.

Yukitora 27th December 2007 03:13 AM

I need a better rip but it looked enjoyable.

I must've missed shu-ya's smile :P

Bashumaru 27th December 2007 03:32 AM

I don't know why but I don't like this PV, I like (don't) leave me alone more than this. The song wasn't as great as I expected and the PV was pretty boring. I didn't get the end where they look like they were about to party and also Shuya's gross smile. Yuck!

veggie 27th December 2007 03:37 AM

Omg l loved it not her best but one of her best!!! l loved her dress, her hair, and her eyes! the consept of the video was great! l didnt much care for the ending l agree with namiie the ending could have been better! And namiie l love your ending so much better!!

agreed :yes..and certainly it did not ruin the mood of the pv.

it was quite nice..not amazing but it's way better than the pv of glitter+fated+t2m..like the atmosphere and costumes but if the ending can be more defined it would be great..and impactbreaker' interpretation makes great sense; in the end the truth is finally able to take it's mask out.

SheFliesHigher 27th December 2007 04:47 AM

Woooo, I really liked it. Fit the mood of the song very nicely. Ayu's appearance and movements as a puppet were awesome. I also loved how she looked in that outfit with the vest. Her appearing in the TV was kind of random, though. And while the ending was amusing, I think it should have ended on a scary note, like the way Ourselves did.

WillofDusk 27th December 2007 05:01 AM

I love hte PV, it's really well made, intense and meaningful

Yes. The "TV Ayu" looked fairly out of place. What was with the newsboy hat? I would've appreciated a more timeless look.

The real/non-miniature Ayu could've looked more surprised or at least fascinated by the marionettes. That's one of my main gripes.

I feel this PV and Together When... are the two most interesting PVs from the album. A little plot or eerie twist (think the faceless Ayu clone in Ladies' Night) would've spruced it up, but the choreography is pretty great. I especially like how the guy lifted Ayu in the air towards the end.

Kikaru 27th December 2007 06:16 AM

^Yeah, I thought that was a nice move. I like the dancing, because it was...well, actually nice and have a certain non-poppy element to it that I enjoyed. The eyes really freaked me, and Shuya's smile reminds me of a clown, but it's a good PV.

Although the TV was kinda random.

s1012h 27th December 2007 06:37 AM

shuya's smile only added to the creepiness
it certainly didn't kill the mood

MeMeMeChant 27th December 2007 07:34 AM

This PV definitely made up for her (don't) leave me alone one.
I liked the creepiness, and the dancing.
&& honestly, Shu-Ya's smile just added to the creepiness... it's not like it was meant to lighten the mood or make it prettier.

gogirlanime 27th December 2007 08:01 AM

it looked nice, but there wasn't much substance, it was just watching them dance. I give it a 5/10. I like (don't) Leave me alone more cuz I've watched that PV like 20 times ^o^

Calico 27th December 2007 08:11 AM

I liked it! I love how they managed to stay so robotic when they were supposed to...great creepiness factor. IMO it fit the song nearly perfectly.

bakacat 27th December 2007 08:24 AM

This is probably the best PV she has released for this year, imo. It also made me like the song even more. :)

AyUmIXx 27th December 2007 08:41 AM

the PV is creeppppppyyyy~
ayu and the dancers' face have no expressions with their white eyes..pretty scary...
but i like it...

ayu's really great in dancing like being controlled..

the pv is awesome, best pv this year
can't wait to get a HQ version ^^

AyuGAME 27th December 2007 01:38 PM

i think there is so much symbolysm in this PV
the TV, newspaper but i don't know the meaning of it
its really mysterious

TITANIC 27th December 2007 01:50 PM

her eyes..
aw like a ghost..
at least i like this pv..better than dlma..

Not~Yet 27th December 2007 02:35 PM

Well firstable I couldn't help but think of earlier Dir en Grey because of those contacts.. XD; But they actually suit Ayu. Maybe she'll wear them when she sings Marionette in her concert. I was positively suprised when I watched the video, because I didn't expect much from the preview pics... Rather predictable, but the breaking free part was cool. :yes I don't think it was scary, but it was mystical and dark, and of course now we must start figuring out the symbolism, like AyuGAME said. Nice work, Ayu~

freedreamer 27th December 2007 03:12 PM

this pv was AMAZING (I received my copy of GUILTY today from CDJAPAN..2 DAYS ONLY!! OMG)

i think its more off...WE DONT WANNA TO SHOW OTHERS OUR REAL EXPRESSIONS...its like when the BIG ayu looks at the Carousel, they are not alive and are hiding from the truth that they can move...

but when she leaves, they reveal...isnt it like most people...hiding their true feelings and revealing once there are no other around? thats my take

LOVE IT...creepy opening

Surreal 27th December 2007 06:26 PM

The ending cracked me up so bad LOLL

Ani_C 27th December 2007 06:32 PM

I only saw a bit due to my "I don't wanna spoil the songs" attitude. Probably one of my favourite (if not my favourite) PV.

I reallly like this pv! But I like all of Ayu's dark/bizarre videos, whether they have substance or not, but yeah. xD

ayu_ready? 27th December 2007 09:28 PM

OMG it can be included to the list of bests and I definately love it
and I like Shu-ya's smilie :P
mwahaa^^

really, it's one of the best this year...too bad other PVs weren't that good :(

maxikot 27th December 2007 10:39 PM

When I first i watched it on dailymotion i found it sooo boring. Just now I have downloaded HQ version and the impression it totally opposite. I love that pv but they should have think of a better ending. I really like the make-ups of Ayu, costumes (she looks beautiful in the room scene, and very stylish when she sings in tv, creppy in the white dress). Very good pv when I watch it in HQ.

sitara 27th December 2007 11:22 PM

i'd really love that ending!!

octocoffee 27th December 2007 11:27 PM

I liked it a lot. It tied in with the song really well, displaying how we are all dead and void of emotion when others are around. And it proves Ayu's dancing PVs do better when PECO isn't choreographing. Actually, everything Ayu does is better without PECO...

chocopockymaster 27th December 2007 11:47 PM

I could think about this more, but I'm going to go with my first instinct: self-loathing.

Marionette-Ayu hates the real Ayu for putting her on display like that in the silly carousel, and her hatred brings her and her cronies to life...Next time real Ayu is sleeping, they're going to be hiding under the pillows and come out and kill her.

...I have no idea where any of that just came from. Anyway...

It would be cool if they could make the spinning section at the end of the catwalk into a little merry-go-round for AT08. Though it would be a LOT of work, and not necessarily able to be easily dismantled. But still. It'd be cool. :D

the angel song 27th December 2007 11:51 PM

^MERRY-GO-ROUND FOR AT08 = WINWINWINWIN
I hope they do something aweesssoomme for this track in her arena tour. And a cool video for the prelude would be great!!

ALARM 28th December 2007 01:15 AM

I didn't like the video... (d)lma was much better to me

rikku411 28th December 2007 01:46 AM

I loved Marionette =]

It was really good (and the song is great in itself)... I liked the creativity and the whole concept. The eerie theme was def. a plus!

The eyes, costume, movements... everything... great! ;)

majrakun 28th December 2007 02:31 AM

Cool video. I like her dark, melancholic videos!

Um. Why does Shu-ya's smile look...long? Or was it just me? LOL

ayuayu798 28th December 2007 04:27 AM

LOVED IT !!! Marionette and together when... were the best pv's for GUILTY ^^
the eyes kind of scare me though ^^

rikku411 28th December 2007 04:37 AM

^ Agreed... but I like the scaryness (?) haha.

CHE.R.RY 28th December 2007 05:55 AM

I loved it! I thought Ayu's acting was really good. I mean she really looked like a puppet...her dancers were pretty freaky too lol! I liked the special effects as well. The PV puzzled me a bit, especially the ending...it was like they were about to have a group hug or something xD! But it was awesome! I give it a 10/10!

I have to say, one of her best PVs this year :yes And usualy! I love it!! I love scary stuff like she put.. And those white eyes are so creepy!! Gomi and Shuya are way too scary o_o" Anyway, all the best :D

YumeHamasaki 29th December 2007 01:12 AM

OMG i love this PV!!! I dunno why but this song's beginning reminds me of Malice Mizer lol

averageone 29th December 2007 04:03 AM

I liked it, a lot. She hasn't done a PvP like this in a while. Since [STEP you]... I think, where it's very visual and takes you to another place like she used to do in the past. The environment and the emotions they portray are very nice and blend in nicely. Granted, the TV Ayu was kind of random, I think of it like the laying on the couch Ayu in [GAME]. Kinda random, but there to look good.

The ending might be something like she finally broke free and can stand on her own without the strings. It's kind of corny and I kinda wish they didn't add it, but they did. As for the alternate ending, I think that would contridict the meaning of the lyrics. It would be cool, but wouldn't fit. Then again.. [ANGEL'S SONG] had nothing to do with wings on someone's back or anything for that matter...

This is by far one of her better PVs in a very long time. It had something she's lacked for a while.. depth.

Too much Takahide Ishii and Wong Hoi. :D

nightlightyear 29th December 2007 05:23 AM

Yeah what was with the ending? I... didnt get it. :laugh

Loved it overall though! :D

majrakun 29th December 2007 11:59 AM

Lets see, do you think there is any connection with the strings finally breaking up and the real-life Ayu waking up? And the fact that the puppets acted NORMAL when Ayu went out of the room? Doesn't it make you wonder, which one EXACTLY is she?

Um...yeah. Sorry for the weird questions. XD

anyway, i think the PV was great!! i guess Together When... and Marionette's PV made it up for the album.. :D i like the creepiness of the PV.

i guess shuya and gomi's close up pretty spoiled the entire PV by that a bit. although i didnt like shuya's big mouth, but i must say it was pretty creepy.. LOL

and also, though i didnt like the ending, i was like What the crap??????????? but i think they did that for a purpose. Ayu was trying to portray something like she isnt being manipulated. she can stand on her own or something like that. i still like the PV a lot!!!!

i wonder why ayu's work can be so inconsistent lol. we were grumbling on the PVs of t2m and decision and now we praised ayu for the PVs of Together When... and Marionette.

I love the dance n their eyes are cool.

I don't like other dancers close ups.

If they cannot make a good ending for the PV... Than it's better the PV stop when ayu close the door :)

Visually it was gorgeous, and I loved the outfit Ayu had in the room, it was dark and more mature look with her current hairstyle. Unfortunately, there wasn't more to it than cutting from room scene to the 'dancers'. The only interesting part was when room Ayu was disturbed and almost caught the dancers moving. The ending was a bit 'hey look we're a group of dancers look how bad we are' (like western videos with the main artist and dancers) and didn't make much sense. I liked the ending for the making of, where it shows the dancers then they disappear. Now if room Ayu had walked in and noticed it was now empty, it would have been more interesting and a bit more creepy.
