Question on Miliyah Kato's 20-CRY-

Okay so like I've been listening to Miliyah Kato for a few weeks and... there's this song, 20-CRY- that just jumped to me.

It reminds me of Ayu's A Song For xx; maybe a little less "epic" but nevertheless a song that describes my life pretty well as well...

But at least I know about Ayu and what compelled her to write ASFxx, but what about Miliyah Kato? Did something prior to the release of 20-CRY- that could make her write such a painfully beautiful song?

I reli want to know this, so I'm asking this here~ The lyrics are just... to real and relatable..

I'm not trying to lessen the magic for you or anything, but age-related songs really seem to be the rage in Japan. Kato Miliyah's 19 memories, 20 -cry-, Namie Amuro's Sweet 19 Blues, Aoyama Thelma's 23 and there are plenty others. There seems to be something special about turning 19 or 20 in Japan. Like bittersweet feelings, or something. I'm interested as well...

Maybe it's not anything super-duper-special lol, i mean hey, Ayu was around 20 too when ASFxx was out, so...

but I'm just kinda interested in what was going on in her life then

If I'm not wrong (and based on a Sailor Moon episode) there are come traditions in Japan about turning 20 and becoming an adult to the eyes of society or something like that

edit: Found this note on Namie's Sweet 19 Blues' review at Allmusic

Quote:

Amuro's debut album came almost presold; four of its songs had already been number one hits in Japan's Oricon charts, all before the teen idol had hit her 19th birthday. (The melancholic passing of another sweet year of youth -- a particularly Japanese obsession -- was the subject of the album title and accompanying song.)

^ but does that include like feeling alone, and wanting to someone to love you etc?

Andrenekoi 11th November 2010 03:50 PM

Well... my final project on college was about manga, and I needed to read some books about it and its context on japanese culture.... And a point the books always enforced was how they tend to feel alone over there while suffering the pressure of society to fit their cultural idea of success and trying to archieve it... So, I think this fear of becoming an adult (that even Ayu has) and all this loneless, while normal in late teens young adulthood anywhere, are bigger there for the competitive nature of japanese society o.o

I see... I'm 2 years early to have this feeling D: though it's kinda .. a "self-feeling" like a battle between myself & myself oh well~~ thank you very much though i think i know how she feels with this now hehe

Well, it may sound stupid, but it's the truth... You will overcome it as u get older... and u will feel that again sometimes... It's natural^^ Everyone feels like that sometimes, and it's stronger when u r on a moment filled with changes...

According to what I remember and what I've read about the song, Miliyah wrote the song with a particular message in mind, it was not really about herself but more about her generation and what you could face at this age. It's a song about growth and troubles/conflict a 20 YO girl can encounter.
It describes what occur in a 20 YO woman's life, which could depict a real pain.

I thought the song was about the pain and loneliness a 20 year old feels? Whatever, I love that freaking song so much omfg. The lyrics, man they hit and broke my heart the first time I read them. They are some of the truest lyrics I have ever read. Ugh just ugh so amazing.

Although, I think 20-CRY- is a lot sadder than A Song for XX. But both songs are different, I guess. 20-CRY- is more about truly being lonely and wanting to have someone. Where A Song for XX mainly speaks about being lonely, but accepting it.

Utena 12th November 2010 11:14 AM

^ it is, I wrote the song is about real pain and conflicts/troubles at 20YO. Loneliness is pain basically so I didn't burden to add it to the list, but she does talk about loneliness.
The girl talking in the song is totally lost in a world that's new to her, she feels lonely, depressed and sad. Her life wasn't what she expected it to be, but in the end, she's thankful she is alive and that's all that matter.

I don't consider it close to A Song for XX simply because the feelings described are not the same and it does give you a feeling of hope somehow, which 20-CRY- doesn't give. This girl will eventually live in pain, but she's happy she's alive, it's a weird feeling.

Funny how this song is one of my favs but I've enver read the lyrics..and I just did because I came back to this thread. AND Im approaching 20 next year...I do feel a lil...like what the lyrics say :(

NintendoHTF1242 15th November 2010 04:38 AM

I think it's because once we're out of school, we truly start to realize how lonely we all get? That's how I interpret the songs lyrics lol. Finally having a full understanding of the world, and not being able to accept it.

waterballoon 15th November 2010 04:39 PM

^ I'm already experiencing while being in school :(

not because i've no friends but.. I've no boyfriend D:

NintendoHTF1242 15th November 2010 11:05 PM

^ Aww bbgurl don't worry ♥ I don't have one either. You'll find someone :) Or someone will find you :)

terra 19th November 2010 03:47 PM

You know waterballoon, as soon as I read your description and the translation, I immediately look for this song and downloaded it :D

I also feel the connection to this song, even though soon I won't be 20 anymore :p
I have friends, but yet still...that hole is still empty, hollow...the love space...I hope someone could fill it someday.

I hope you're lucky too with this :yes
Because sometimes when we're not looking for it, love will find us...they say :D

thinkingoutloud89 20th November 2010 09:24 AM

was this solved?
The song was written for a handy-drama (?) or something like that. The theme was given by that, so she wrote the lyrics around it.
