Why does Ayu have only one wing?
 

Ayu uses this imagery a LOT in her songs and even in her tour logos, but I was just wondering if she had ever said anything about it in an interview or something?

I think it all origins from "Endless sorrow". Usually I don't read translated lyrics but I always knew Ayu was singing of someone having only "one wing" so I used google and here are the english lyrics taken from primenova.com:

How you interpret the imagery is up to you (one of the great things about Ayu's lyrics in this particular song).

To me it represents continuing a fight in the face of inevitable failure - with only one wing, you can't hold up your own weight forever, nevermind the weight of someone else - but you still have that wing so you are going to try with all your might to stay aloft. Ayu's career will eventually end, she'll eventually pass away... regardless of what happens, these words and her support for her friends, family, staff, and fans will not & cannot last forever, but she doesn't see her work as being in vain. She's still working to support herself & everyone she cares about despite the inevitability of it all ending one day.

IMO because she doesn't have her freedom, she can't fully fly away from her career, avex, obligations, etc. It's an idiom.

On a more serious note, thanks for the explanations guys!! :D I never really thought too much about it so I just wanted to see what everyone else thought. I like the ideas of it representing the hope she has even though she has such restricted freedom.

from her lyrics i get that she is only part, and she needs someone else to make her whole.
thats why she only had one wing when she first got the tattoo... but after breaking up with that one dude (dont know/care about his name) She had the tattoo completed, meaning she no longer needed anyone to be whole. but its till just one wing, because its just her.

The line in Endless sorrow always makes me think of a quote from Italian writer Luciano de Crescenzo:
"We are each of us angels with only one wing, and we can only fly by embracing one another."

I think that´s why each of them, Ayu and Nagasa had a tattoo with only one wing...
