a-sides?? b-sides?!?!

I know that a-sides are usually the first song to appear on the single, and the b-side is the second song... but...

these terms are confusing to me ^.^* what does it mean when something is double a-sided? what's the difference between a double a-sided single and a single that has an a-side and b-side?

thanks!
:wave

The term comes from the "old" cassettes that would have a song or 2 on one side, and instrumentals or something on the other. For a "Double A-Side", a good example is "Poker Face". It has both "Poker Face" and "Friend" for the first 2 tracks, and instrumentals for the 2 songs on the last 2 tracks. Not sure if this makes any sense, since I was a bit confused by it before as well!

i was confused about this as well! thanks for clearing things up.

Not sure if 'poker face' is a Double-A side...but the way I was told are A sides are feature songs, ones that are promoted with perhaps CM tie-ups, or PVs, and b-sides are other original songs on the single but aren't promoted.

Say '&' has 4 songs but is a 3-A single.
'A' is a 4-A single
vogue is an A-side while 'everfree' is a b-side song
Do As Infinity's 'Under the sun/under the moon' is a Double-A side.

Sometimes multiple A side singles have the '/' dash as the title, the songs listed there are A sides, (that is if the single doesn't have an original title like '&' or 'H').

But it's confusing nowadays anyways o_o" it used to be that side-Bs aren't seen on albums...i think o_O"

Hmm..I thought Double A-sides were like this:

1. Song A
2. Song B
3. Song A (Instrumental)
4. Song B (Instrumental)

So...now I'm confused again @.@' !

2. Another A Side
3. A Side -Instru-
4. Another A Side -Instru-

kournikova 28th January 2004 08:31 AM

actually, its from the days of 7" vinyl...
the a-side would be the single track, the b-side would be another track... didnt usually have instrumental versions, just 2tracks...

double a-side is when both tracks are promoted as singles... or in the case of [H] + [&] = triple-a-side... in the case of [A] = quadruple-a-side :D

thanks for clearing this all up for me!!

Sometimes b-sides are just to help fulfill a single and the artist doesn't put that much efforts in the song anyways (Most often b-sides don't even make it to the album at all)...just like a little bonus. However sometimes it's funny because the b-side sometimes is a lot better than the a-side :eek I've seem such things happening several times (Reminds of Aikawa Nanase's single R-Shitei)

Under the moon freaks me though :eek I could never tell whether that is an a-side or b-side...i mean, it is an awesome song, it pairs with Under the sun (even though the name of the single is just Under the sun), It has a PV, the PVs of both songs matches ("Which do you like?")....Why the heck wasn't it featured on TRUE SONG though? That album still had a lot od space....One or Eight made it but Under the moon didn't...go figure.....

hanabiwings 29th January 2004 12:07 AM

Main definition today is this:

An A-side goes on the album.

B-side is single-only material.

If a single is double A-sided, then both of those songs are going onto the album. In many cases, the B-sides are remixes these days. It's just bonus material--perks for buying the single.

DAI's B-SIDES RULE!!!except they never put em on albums-__-....they should make a B-side album^^

~K+ 29th January 2004 12:40 AM

One or Eight got on...even though 'Under the moon' really should've be on -_-" and that was an A side, and a question goes to, whether Namie's 'Did U' is an A-side or B-side?

mellow amber rocks as a b-side though imo~

Gackt's 'Crescent' album also has a lot of b-side songs on it o_o" and as for BoA she throws every a-side or b-side song she has from singles onto her albums o_o"

Larisa-chan 29th January 2004 03:13 AM

I've found that quite a few times I like b-sides better than a-sides ^.^

[ever free] is one of da greatest b-side 2 grace an artists repertoire imo...

stephymoo 29th January 2004 05:45 PM

Ahh.. thank you everyone, I was wondering about a-sides and b-sides, too, but now you have all cleared it up for me. :] Thanks.

I couldn't agree more. I like both the original and H/\L's 2000 mix. It's quite possibly the greatest b-side ever...

yep, i cant believe that when i first heard [ever free] i hated it... i was in japan in summer 2000 and bought the [vogue] single, saw there was a b-side and was lookin forward to a new ayu track... heard it but thought it was boring :eek [butteh my japanese was crap then so i couldnt appreciate her skills at lyric-writing...] but 4years down da road, its one of my favourite ayu tunes, ahhhhhh, i might be performin it at a japanese karaoke night tomorrow :laugh ill butcher it fo sure but its all in the name of entoxichttp://www.avexnet.or.jp/ayu/report/48/image/a.gifted fun :D
soshite... H/\L's rmx of [ever free] is really atmospheric and an awesome mix :thumbsup
i just wish theyd used the full lyrics instead of repeating the first chorus :weep imo, that woulda been betta :shrug
