Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music

It defines around 150 different types of electronic music, each entry has several music extracts to demonstrate the styles. Very readable, although the entries are often rather opinionated!

Under House -> JPOP a remix of Ayumi's Trust is included.
But it's a shame the author's attitude towards Japan isn't a little more open:

Despite his words on Japan (it gets worse than the quote above!) he really knows his stuff so it's still a great site. No need to flame him in your replies to this thread. :)

I remember first looking at this years ago (though it has been updated since then). Definitely an opinionated guy, like you mentioned, but still a worthwhile thing to check out.

Apparently he hasn't looked at the U.S. very closely. Home to cheese in a spray can, wine in a box, and reality TV. Otherwise, it's a very good and informative site.

I don't understand why JPop is listed under House though...that just doesn't make any sense to me. I mean...I don't think "Trust" is a House song is it?

You're right, that example is arguably more Trance than House. But I think our view of what JPOP is, is affected by our familiarity with Ayu releases (which often tend towards Mainstream/Trance-influenced), rather than the JPOP market as a whole.
Like many others, it's too large to fit into just one category, but overall it does seem to fit better under House next to Eurodance/Eurobeat than anywhere else I can see.

I guess you are right once I think about it...at least for that specific type of JPop. I do think he is making the mistake of lumping all JPop into one category though, because it definitely is not all the same.

I guess my confusion came because I never actually realized that Eurodance and similar styles fell under the umbrella of house music. Oops. :rolleyes

I don't see how Eurodance is HOUSE AT ALL! I ABSOLUTELY DREAD AND HATE HOUSE MUSIC BUT I AM LIKE CRAZY OVER EURODANCE (E-ROTIC :) )...

It's a pretty good site if you are a newcomer to electronic music, however once you learn a lot more about the different types, his descriptions seem very shallow and sarcastic, especially towards genres he doesn't like. *screams bias I tell you*
However, I love his articles and his satirical humor on the rave scene. Genius I tell you! Genius!

House music can sound very different depending on what kind you are listening to. Eurodance, just because it's house music doesn't mean it will sound the same as everything else. I used to despise house music and thought it all sounded the same until I actually heard REAL house music like BT, Irene, and Richard Humpty Vission. I can't get enough of the stuff now ^_^

Hey thanks for the link. I used to be a regular listener to di.fm and then just stopped. Only listen to it for Armin van Buuren's weekly A State of Trance episodes.

It is funny that they have move's Overdrive listed. That should be part of the Eurobeat genre for the most part. The guy who wrote this probably never considered Satoshi Tomiie or Yoji Biomehanika.

Something else that is funny is when you click on that logo to the right of the di.fm logo at the bottom right of the page and it takes you to www.ishkur.com. Oh look, an anime character...

I love that website!!! But that guy doesn't know that Jpop isn't enterely "Eurobeat", and J-pop isn't the same as Shibuya-Kei...

(Shibuya-kei: Pizzicato Five, Cubismo Grafico, Fantastic Plastic Machine, etc.)

I think everyone should read this so they can actually learn what trance and "techno" actually are.
