The Ayu PV interpretation thread!

I've been meaning to make a thread like this for a while now and I finally have the time to do so.
We all know ayu writes her own lyrics, and her videos, I think, are her ideas aswell, and usually have alot of meaning to them, even if we can't quite understand it ourselves.

The idea of this thread is to post your ideas and interpretations of ayu's pvs, and her song lyrics too if you like. If you could, just so it's a little clearer, construct your posts like this:

(PV/Song Number)(PV Title)
eg.PV #15.Vogue
Then write what you think parts of the PV represent or mean

Thanks!

ImpactBreaker 7th April 2006 09:44 PM

Well I remember I made interpretations of 3 PVS from her. I probably did interpretation for others but I can't remember them which ones were at the moment. Some of my interpretations are pushing it way too far, I know.

(PV #? forgiveness)

Quote:

Ayu is imprisoned in her own sadness in a lonely, dark dungeon in a forgotten island...the emptiness a person feel after hating someone for a long time. She can see the blue sky but she can't reach it....As long as you still won't forgive, you'll always be traped on your hard feelings and your life will become a mess, you'll forget to live properly and admire the good things on life. The pixies show the right way Ayu must follow in order to get back her happinness once again...the pixies are nothing more than her own subconscient, showing her the right path to follow. The Flower Ayu represents Ayu's mind. She's (Flower Ayu) melancholic and lonely. Until it (her mind) decides to show itself to the real imprisoned ayu as a gray egg (Gray, a melancholic, sad color) representing her state of mind of still hating. She realizes about her own saddness for still hating and do one of the most noble human acts: the act of turning hate into "forgiveness". As soon as she forgives and forgets, the egg turns into gold (no need to explain that gold represents something very special lol), showing that she no longer is hating and that she has completelly forgiven whoemver or whatever she was hating. Being free of such a terrible thing she gets her freedom by getting those beautiful wings and is finally able to get free of that dungeon. It represents her new state of mind, free of hatred, full of love, she looks very beautiful in the outside but that in fact is how she is in her inner self after finally forgiving.

(PV #? Greatful days)

Quote:

Ayu is bored. She has nothing to do....she only has a book with herself to read. So she starts thinking....and imagine a party!!!!! Something that would be anything but boring! A party with friends and lots of people, where she can forget the problems and have fun!!! it's all about feeling hyper, having bursts of adrenalin. The guy breaking glasses represents that! In japan there are houses where you pay just to break the things...it's considered a therapy for getting free of stress which works. The crocodile means adventure and danger, which also represents adrenalin. The guy on the motorcycle is also getting excitement from the danger/fun he's facing. It's all about having the feeling of freedom to do anything, to feel hyper and to party. To get free from boredom.

(PV #? No Way To Say)

Quote:

I wonder if she is talking about the important person she lost on the lyrics of No way to say, and told how everything happened on the song memorial address.

The santa claus in the No way to say PV gave her a free gift. A free gift mean it's something given with the heart...not something bought. Ayu refuses it at first as she was feeling sad because she was thinking about the person she lost. But then an ANGEL in order not to make her lose the opportunity, grabs the gift and deliver it to her. Ayu keeps melancholic and sad, xmas is coming but she lost an important person. She decides to go and pick the gift at the set time. She receives a small package. While she is walking with it she shakes it to try and guess what the content is and then hugs it closely and make a wish. The wish :

" I wish I could have heard from you
That you never regretted the days we had spent together
Only once, even if it had been a lie"
(from memorial address lyrics).

She then turns around, the santa claus remove the mask and Ayu sees the person she lost, making her cry.

Wow! That's amazing, ImpactBreaker! ^_^

LacusClyne 8th April 2006 01:04 AM

there's for the 'forgiveness', which is the only one that i don't quite get it.

Hachimitsu 9th April 2006 04:22 PM

I like your interpretation of "No way to say" :)

I remember reading an official explanation of Moments or Ourselves somewhere on AHS.. They were really good. Oh, and there was a lot of speculation about Alterna, some people wrote some good interpretations about that PV too.

Neo Daydream 9th April 2006 04:49 PM

wow i never thought of forgiveness that way ^^ cool!

AyuGAME 10th April 2006 02:11 AM

nice interpretation there
i will post my interpretation of no way to say

"ladies night"
# ?

Umm, it seems nobody seems to get it so I'll try to show you what I'm seeing.

Okay, at the beginning of the song; Ayu is like (I don't know what it's called so I'll say...>) telegraphing out her message to the baldheaded ladies b4 the actual grand meeting in the colliseum (sp? LOL). Okay, the second Ayu is walking confidently down a hallway (place) she's been before. On the little trolly thingy that she's pulling is an elephant (MAN) carrying two little pink animals, I think they are unicorns I'm not sure (they are WOMEN). The little animal she has in her arm is like her security blanket almost. Like of like Paris Hilton's doggy except this one is just a toy and in a way it will do everything she wants it to do. It's the same thing with the elephant, if he wasn't controlled by the "cuteness" of the two unicorn-things he wouldn't be holding them at all. So basically, Ayu is like this beautiful person who's never had to work too hard to get what she wants. & everything around her reflects what she needs to know before she can go anywhere else.

So, moving along; she has the key, the looks, the "cuteness" to get her through the door she wants to choose (perhaps her path of destiny); but it's not meant for her to go through that particular door so she tries the next one. They all do not work. So finally, one door works and it happens to be the Butterfly lady's room. (hmm? what's with Ayu & butterflies these days...anyway)

The butterfly woman is a lady that is almost like Ayu in every way as far as your first appearance of her. She batts her eyes because she's a very "fluttery" kind of person. Everything she does is quick and without thought. She's exactly like a robot in this case. The masks on her dress are unpainted (did u notice the masks?) they represent that every part of her really is just fluttery-fake. She's so quick with life that she hasn't spent much time building her own self.
A butterfly is a beautiful creature; but it's also delicate. If you were to smash a butterflies wings it would probably die from the pain. So with this lady, if you were to take away all of things she had (we'll say riches 4 an example) you would crash her world down. This is like Ayu in very 1st appearance u should have gotten of her before this moment. The lady and Ayu are trapped in this cage of the typical "stereotype" of a woman (hence the one butterfly in the cage she carries). They are ONE in the SAME. Same issues, just different women.

Ayu opens another door after this; the door of "earthly knowledge & truth." It's almost as if she sees the light; THE TRUTH.

Next: are the bald headed women walking up to Ayu now dressed in military garb. The women are all marching together as one force; meaning that we are all almost the same...the weird thing is that well you'll see a couple of lines down...
Ayu is a dictator, ruler and commander of these women. They are her army (that's us LADIES...^^ LOL). She's telling us women; don't settle for his garbage, be strong enough to defend yourselves. Lookout for the signs, be aware of the danger of not noticing them.
The thing is that these women (that's us) have no ears; so we are applauding to something we cannot hear. Ayu's message is not getting across to us.

[The airplanes that fly above Ayu don't have any symbolism that I am aware of so far...they are supposed to imitate WWII I guess...aren't those plances from back then???]

Alright, so after seeing that socialite-Ayu panics. She can't handle the truth so she turns around frantically looking for somewhere to turn to when she finally sees herself with no face.
NO FACE AYU => ayu with no identity. She has conformed to society's rules and whatnot for so long that she can no longer hold up her own face. She stares back at the viewer; delivering a message: KEEP YOU IDENTITY; NEVER CHANGE FOR MAN (in this case this means the world).

Ayu runs away into an elevator> this represents the ups and downs of life. Instead of going up to another level of thinking like she should've if she'd have accepted the truth; Ayu goes back down to the place she knows. Her insecurities and mental boundaries are holding her back from mental-evolution. She can accept being more than just a pretty-girl. She'd rather stay that way than be intelligent. Dictator-Ayu is the woman inside of her basically trying to come out but socialite-Ayu refuses to let her go to that point.

Okay, there are other parts in the PV I left out to explain at the end::

THE FRENCH MAID
The french maid is whipping this lady into shape. She needs to be punished for something that I'm not to sure of. It reminds me of the my name's WOMEN performance at ARENA TOUR 2004-2005A. It's like she's beating some sense into her. The lady she's beating almost looks like a teenage girl so basically she's beating her into woman. (beating=> forcing this girl to believe in the same thing Ayu ran away from)
In the background *just noticed this myself* there is a statue of a man & he is chained up...this woman (the french maid/whoever owns this room) promotes female dominance just as dictator Ayu.

THE ALIENS IN THE RED ROOM
They're objective is the same as the french maid. All they are doing differently is hypnotizing the one they are trying to save through the eyes. The one with the long hair is the one who has thought this way for the longest. So b4 this scene she has already converted the other three aliens in the background to this "strange (alien)" way of thinking. All she has to do is finish the last one.

AYU ON THE TELEPHONE
Ayu is calling for help. She doesn't know who to call but we can all assume that it is a man. When we run into trouble with anything the MAJORITY of us turn to a nice strong man...whether he be our fathers, our brothers, friends, boyfriends or even husbands. Whoever fits the case, that's who we mostly run to.
The problem is the man Ayu depends on is not a very good one...and you'll see this later on in the PV.

AYU IN THE ELEVATOR (part II)
Once she's inside, Ayu thinks she's going to just go back to the way things were. Little does she know that she'll have to pay a price 4 knowing the things she knows. Destiny plays a very cruel trick on Ayu and crushes her inside the elevator (basically just crushing & erasing her memory of what she saw).

AYU & HER MAN
It's a little clear that this man is probably mentally & emotionally abusive to Ayu. You can see the fear/dead look in her eyes as the camera zooms in. Basically, he's just taken the life/confidence out of her once again. The telephone remains off the hook so that Ayu may never try to call/remember this place ever again. It is clear that since she ran back to this life she must not want freedom too bad.

::screams 4 joy:: can't believe I'm finished; so did it help out a little? If not; ask me a question & I'll explain it to ya! ^^

About You

About You

Hamasaki’s wardrobe: While she’s in the clear box her clothing is similar to that of the 50s. This was a time of innocence [also reference the girls in Victorian wardrobe in the PV for ladies night, another era of politeness, vanity, innocence and aesthetic tastes].

The clear boxes: If you remember it flashes the boxes and the lights. The lights almost remind me of stars or maybe the lights of a city since you can’t see the stars from a city. I also believe the boxes are representations of a city, they’re trapped and spread apart in two different places. Also notice at some points a man is standing near the boxes or in-between. This might just be avex or possibly max maybe even just someone who emotionally split the two people. Maybe he’s even just that, an emotion.

The girl with the tattoo on her back: The tattoo is a phoenix and most people should already know that, that represents rebirth. I also think it has to do with how painful tattoos are and in a sense how painful rebirth is.

I think a lot of the other stuff is just there for aesthetics.

btw, if your explinations are too long, people might not want to read :\

RAINBOW
In the video I believe Ayumi is depressed and starts imagining all these past visions of herself and how she despreatly wants to grab on to a piece of her past when she was happy. For example when Ayu is crossing the road I believe that is what the Ayu who's looking at her is imagining from her past and she's starting to think that the happy Ayu is real and not part of her past. When Ayu walks through herself when she's wearing orange I think the Ayu who actually bumps into the other Ayu is her once happy self but they sort of switch places and create a sort of rainbow. Now that the past Ayu is scared/sad and runs off because of insecurity I guess. The now happy real Ayu chases after her to confront her past. I think Ayu is saying that being happy is about accepting the past. When they meet in the cafe I think the kiss represents Ayu accepting her past & present and looking forward to the future. Now that everything is alright the other Ayu becomes part of her past (the scene when they are sitting down and the camera pans out and the other Ayu is gone.

That probably made no sense but I tried. eh.

Ladies Night

The hall: The hall has doors which probably lead to different fates or paths in life. She can’t open any of the doors even though she has the key.

Hamasaki in the halls outfit: It seems mostly a reflection of child hood. It even reminds me of a doll or a toy a girl would play with. The thick make up, the pink. I love the play on sex though, she’s playfully playing with the key and her skirt is pretty short.

The Maid: This is mostly about women’s dominance. She isn’t whipping a women, she’s whipping a guy dressed up in a school boy uniform. I hardly ever see women with shoulders that broad. I also believe this has to do with women and being sexual. Also notice the statue [bust] of a Greek man in chains? It could be saying women have had the upper hand for ages or maybe that just now women have gained an upper hand. The bear is probably just there for pleasure. Humor? It’s a very visual video.

The women in the butterfly room: Her clothing is that of the Victorian age, when women where innocent. I believe the masks were put on her dress for a reason. Sometimes we use our clothing style to hide who we are. This could also just be to show that show how obvious we are when we’re wearing our “masks,” similarly to the term “wearing your heart on your sleeve.” The butterflies in the room represent change. She also has a cage with a butterfly stuck in it. Maybe she’s caging/control her change?

The red room: Probably just a play on fetish, like the Maid. It’s also probably there just for show.

Sorry if what I have to say is cold and to the point? I never come up with stories when I watch the pvs and I've had years of art so I've learned a lot about how artist purposfully show us things and sometimes accidently show us things.

That's a pretty good explanation...I've been wondering about that PV for a while. But what about military Ayu? Is it that she is taking control over women and telling them what to do?

thanks for the explanations!! especially for Ladies Night. i always thought it was a PV with no story lol.

Wow, some great interpretations out there.
Nice thread idea.

edit: YES a walking proud interpretation would be awesome.
I don't get anything at all in that PV whatsoever.

Aisha_Angel 12th April 2006 09:46 PM

WALKING PROUD

Oh wow, walking proud is just life in general.

The little boy represents the pure innocence of a child. He doesn't know/sense the danger of talking to the strange figure in the cloak and does what normal children do> he approaches him with a question: "do you want candy?" The candy is kind of like, "do you want me around?" basically, a lets be friends statement.
The cloaked figure could be interpreted as evil but, he never did anything to the child so perhaps he was partially good or maybe even dead. To me, this hooded-figure is kind of like a self-sacrificial person to me, kind of like Jesus. From what I can remember, (i didn't look back @ the PV like I did ladies night) he hung from the tree in the shape of a cross (I THINK...). So yeah, he represents every person who's ever tried to give up their life for other peoples benefits.

This however doesn't always end in death. As shown with the indian-looking man & the elderly man. They both have metal plates on their bodies. This represents change of the physical/emotional state. Apparently, they conformed to the world and have forgotten themselves completely. The only difference between the too of them is that the old man realizes his mistake and lives with regret; where as the younger man has become so adjusted to the world that he's become a robot. He has no emotions and not thoughts; all of his movements are controlled by someone other than himself.

Then comes Ayu...innocent and kind-hearted. She's stepping into the world this way. When the old man sees her, he has a chance to tell her of all the things he knows and to share with her his wisdom. But instead he looks down in shame and lets her find out for herself.

That little hole in the ground represents a time warp to the future. The ayu lying on the table is a "naked and free" woman. This is who Ayu could be if she knew she didn't have to settle for lifes troubles and started to walk with pride in herself.

At the end of the video you see Ayu walk up to this sheet and removes it with curiousity. If you pause your video at the right moment, you will see what kind of life Ayu chose. She chose CONFORMITY over FREEDOM.

Basically, the message in this video is to remain yourself through all of life's troubles and people's critisims. Never settle & remain free. But also, never be too innocent because that's what evil people want to see.

Aisha_Angel 12th April 2006 10:52 PM

Once again, I apologize for it being as long as LADIES NIGHT & WALKING PROUD...it's hard for me to explain things the short way b/c I want everyone to kind of fully understand it. (Kind of like how a deaf man uses his hands; I use a lot of words. ^^;)

ENDLESS SORROW

Hmm, have any of you all watched the movie, "Equilibrium"? Well that's what this PV is kind of about.

Today, we live in a world where the freedom to speak is slowly turning into a "requirement to be quiet". Have you ever noticed when someone says something powerful or voices their opinion they end up shot down or sometimes even ultimately killed for it? That's what this video is about; oppression in silence.

In the beginning, we see a black man singing a song of freedom. He is immediately arrested for doing so.

If you pause your video just right, you will see that the two men talking on communicator devices are discussing that the government will eliminate all those who threaten it's control with the power of voice. Moving along we meet a little boy I personally call, "Angel".
Angel is a little boy who was like all of the other children; born with love and life in his heart. But unlike the other kids, Angel didn't let the world of today mold him into what everyone else wanted him to be. Somehow up above, an angel from heaven sent him a feather fluttering down to the sky. This feather represents wings (aka: freedom). With this feather, comes hope.

In the world Angel lives in, freedom of expression (feelings) is also taken away by the government. Angel can't even confide in his parents about the feather without them telling him to be quiet with their fingers. And at school, Angel is left feeling estranged from the rest of the class because of who he is inside. He's not like others and it shows clearly through this PV. The only one Angel can confide in is his mechanical dog...Which represents someone who is "programmed" just like everyone else.
So oneday, Angel decides to get to the bottem of his curiousity and climb up the tower. The tower represents like Mount Sinai (you know the mountain Moses climbed). It's where he will find all of the answers that match up with his questions. On his way up, Angel sees an elderly man who in the past has tried to go where Angel is trying to go. He points Angel in the right direction and prays for him to be like a messiah and save the rest of the world.

Also inside this building, are all of the people who ever tried to break the law of silence. As punishment their throats were cut out so that they would never speak again. (These people represent free-thinkers. They are good people all around...All they wanted was the freedom to keep being themselves).

As he reaches the top he sees himself as an angel waiting just for him. Looking down to his family and the world below, Angel mouths along to the chorus and says according to translation:

"Even if there is
No wing left for you
There is still
One wing left for me
Together... together..." (from masa's translation in the lyrics board)

At the end of the video, Ayu receives that very same sign and takes it willingly. It is in this video that her message rings clear; Ayu somehow believes she was sent here to keep the cry of freedom ringing loudly. And if we believe in freedom of our voices, we should have faith in her. In someway, her songs will set us free from our chains; but only if we let them.

hopeorpain 12th April 2006 11:49 PM

^ thanks for the walking proud translation!! I like that conformity/freedom idea
