The Official Kelis Thread

Back in 1999, SHE HATED YOU SO MUCH RIGHT NOW! AHHHHHHHHHHHH! In 2003, her milkshake brought all the boys to the yard. In 2006, she was bossy and I'm hard-pressed to say where her big afro cloud went.

She's the foul-mouthed, spunky Kelis whom nobody cares about anymore.

You a fan? You like her but not that much? You interested? You don't like/can't stand her and wanna speak up?

It's all done here, in the official Kelis discussion thread, which, due to her glaring lack of widespread popularity, I predict will be dead in two days (perhaps less).

I like Kelis, considering how controversial she is as far as her lyrical style. But what sets her apart from everyone else is that she "owns up to it" completely. She's not pretending that she's something she's not. She KNOWS her "milkshake" brings the boys to the yard and she is the "boss" of her life; not some guy.

I like her and I love her personality. I also think that her and Nas make a much better HIP-HOP ROYALTY couple than Beyonce' & Jay-Z. They look like real love whenever they are together.

Jayee19 19th October 2006 11:30 PM

I love Kelis, and her husband is a freakin' lyrical genius. Jay-Z and Beyonce are cool and all, but Nas and Kelis are fire!

explodingbird 20th October 2006 12:07 AM

I like her vocie, her lyrics, her personality (it comes across great in her music), but her albums are hit-or-miss. I don't care for much of Kaleidoscope or Kelis Was Here, but I love Wanderland and think Tasty is really very good.

I just want her to maintain quality.

Plus her new album is too damn long.

I do like her intros, though. Very creative and fun. When she started shrieking "BABIES! BABIES! BABIES BABIES BABIES BABIES!" in the KWH intro, I was a little unsettled. It reminded me of Lady With A Beautiful Baby from the Girly webcomic.

I think that's one of the reasons it flopped. Plus of course, lack of promotion

Anyway I like Kelis.

She's one of the few artists out there not afraid to speak her mind on whatever - and the music is good

Oh and milkshake is very special to me :swink

*sigh* memories :mischief

Plus the album was just boring as hell. I mean, holy crap. If you're going to make it 17+ tracks long (I understand some versions have two bonus tracks, bringing it to intro + 19 songs... 20 tracks) make the whole thing itneresting.

Plus, Milkshake > Bossy.

Mad_Cactuar 20th October 2006 04:49 AM

I only heard Tasty and Kelis Was Here is full. Her voice is excellent but she wastes it on crappy slow ballads.

I freakin' love Bossy and Blindfold Me. The latter is so sexy it should be banned.

explodingbird 20th October 2006 04:52 AM

MC, I... definitely suggest Wanderland. Then again, I am biased.

I do love her ballads but some are boring as hell.

For overall songs?

Shooting Stars, Perfect Day, Get Along With You, Mafia, Suspended, Protect My Heart, Sugar Honey Iced Tea, Marathon, and Mr. U.F.O. Man = Love. (Oh, and Lil' Suzie and I Don't Care Anymore).

Her voice can be a little irritating at times... but it's awesome on Marathon. And Caught Out There, obviously. I love how recognizable it is.

drewbilation 20th October 2006 05:59 AM

Kelis is a ****ing genius. Love the *****!

Mad_Cactuar 20th October 2006 07:30 AM

OMG, I forgot to mention my fave Kelis track of all time. "Trick Me".

I found out she had an album called 'Wanderland' just a month or two ago. It was a Europe exclusive I think.

Apparently. Funny thing is? I've found a copy or two of it here. In fact, I bought my copy of Wanderland at Wal-Mart of all places. Last place you'd expect to find an import album (I also found Anastacia's self-titled album at fye, so...)

I am a fan.
Tasty is amazing.
Kelis Was Here needs some time to grow.
Tasty is amazing.

Anyway, I just got this idea that since she's not that popular anywhere, you could call her urban-indie/indie-urban! (with indie being not well known, not rockish) :o The term sounded so clever in my head.

xkangtax 21st October 2006 01:32 AM

I think her songs are alright. She just need more range in her songs I think.

realize_! 21st October 2006 01:40 AM

she's alright. I think bossy was a horrible song though and the video was just stupid. milkshake on the other hand. gawd that was like the song at my elementary school for a while. at school dances friends we're like grinding up on each other to that song. I on the other hand was the wall flower :D but back to topic, she's not bad.

*Petit* 21st October 2006 02:53 AM

Her first single was too noisy, but good. It had its uses. *watching "milkshake" on MTV back in 2004 I guess in the middle of the day* father enters room: "Are you watching porn?!"

I diden't even know she had new material released. I'm lost.

Norrel 21st October 2006 04:01 AM

Wait, she actually still has a career? o_o

And that is not in a negative career, I seriously though she lost her career after Milkshake x.x

I haven't seen the video for Bossy. But... DUDE! Kids grinding up on each other in elementary school?!

Yep, AND... Milkshake wasn't even her first single. Unless you meant from Tasty - but her verrrrrrrrrry first single was in 1999, Caught Out There. Listen to it. She screams the chorus.

Nah, tasty didn't do too badly here for her (I think it went gold) - the other singles flopped but did well internationally. Bossy didn't do bad either but the new album flopped. HARD.

I have to wonder what'll happen after this one.

Halla 22nd October 2006 07:17 PM

I've liked Kelis since her debut , she has witty & creative songs. I especially love Wanderland & Kaleidoscope , The Neptunes productions are awesome.

I like her newest album , but unfortunately it just doesn't live up to Tasty , Kaleidoscope & Wanderland to me. it's a still a good album , I like 'Blindfold Me', 'Bossy' , 'Handful' & 'Fire'.

it's a shame she isn't better received in the US , but luckily here in Europe she has had better success :)

here she had like 3 hits off Kaleidoscope which got a lot of play on MTV & etc , one hit off Wanderland & 2 hits off Tasty. 'Trick Me' was a huge hit here , more popular than Milkshake. 'Bossy' is getting played at the moment & I'm guessing they'll start promoing 'Blindfold Me' soon.

I like all of the songs on there but they shouldn've cut it down to like 12-14
