[2006] What genre is ourselves?

May I ask what Genre this song falls under. Listening to the Instrumental over and over it confuses me more and more.

AyUmIXx 18th December 2006 03:53 PM

i believe it's a pop~dance pop probably..

Keishi 18th December 2006 05:59 PM

Scary Pop.

sora2522 18th December 2006 10:02 PM

HAHA scary pop...

i think it's like pop..but a bit of grunge rock laced around. like a chocolate sundae. it's still sweet (haha i know that's sorta lame...but i just randomely thought of that)

IYFreak 18th December 2006 11:09 PM

what the Lol you make it sound yummy....I want a sundae now

Delirium-Zer0 19th December 2006 05:20 AM

It has alot of sounds in it. It's almost jazzy in the chorus, structure-wise. Not to mention the rock, pop, dance, and almost hip-hop sorta influences in it.

Songs like "ourselves" are why I'm starting to really hate genre labels. WAY too confusing.

I was never able to categorize this song either. It always, just kind of, stood alone by itself...One of my favorites by Ayu, and definitely one of my favorite things about her.

But then, I can't categorize alot of her music, especially those from 2002-2003, this is what I consider "Ayu's sound" one of the unique things about her. I refuse to label it as anything else. It's sort of impossible sometimes, especially with songs like this one.

s1012h 19th December 2006 06:30 AM

no clue haha
it's a weird mix
i think the song's okay, i'm not a huge fan of it
just never really appealed to me
but it's definitely different

explodingbird 19th December 2006 07:02 AM

Very tough call. Pop with hip-hop and R&B mixed in sounds closest, but... I dunno. A lot of her songs are hard to categorize properly. What in the hell are songs like Free & Easy, Bold & Delicious, STEP you, or NEVER EVER, just to name a few?

Tasked 19th December 2006 08:39 AM

The arrangements are very much influenced by Hip-Hop and R&B, while thr melody is that of a rockish popsong.. so.. yea.. tough call..

as for STEP you; that's easy.. electro pop
Bold & Delicious; experimental gospel-pop
Never ever; pop... nothing more; nothing less
Free & Easy; together with Daybreak it kind of has it's own CREA-genre. Pretty hippie-like.

capsule 19th December 2006 08:41 AM

Pop R&B.

Free & Easy: Ballady at the begninning, pop with a bit of rock in the chorus, back to ballady

B&D: really odd gospel-rock-pop-thingy

STEP you: like mad said: electro-pop

NEVER EVER: pop with rock guitars in the background. so yea

Mad_Cactuar 19th December 2006 02:58 PM

Personally, I classify it as World Music.

If that's a genre, Ayumi is a guy.

I strongly disagree, the chorus is pure rock, coupled with the distorted bridge.

Maybe all of those are fusions and crossovers?

Kodayumi 19th December 2006 03:01 PM

Horror pop :D

Keishi 19th December 2006 05:58 PM

ourselves has a lot of rock pop influences.
STEP you has a lot of electronica rock/pop influences.
Bold & Delicious has a lot of gospel/choir themed influences.
Free & Easy is like...a church-organ/gospel rock.
NEVER EVER is pop rock.

IMO.

RoboNyanya 19th December 2006 06:54 PM

What's with the horror/scary pop comments? Honestly, Ourselves doesn't even have a scary element until you've seen the video.

Keishi 19th December 2006 07:11 PM

I think the melody is already scary, coz it was..like...Bang Bang Bang bass banging and there goes the rhyming chant on the chorus....

Chibi_Venus 22nd December 2006 11:04 PM

Couldn't we classify it as "dark" or shall we not really consider that an official genre?

*Petit* 23rd December 2006 05:21 PM

^
I like that idea. =P It's easier to consider the emotions etc of a song than the genre. =P

Well, I think it's definetly pop. Influenced (the melody) by middle east, the arrangements are very pop, but maybe slightly rnbish if any because of the syncoped rythm etc?

MsMiyabi 23rd December 2006 05:54 PM

I think it's a popish rock song. But im can't tell to much. Because when thread pop up what is your fave ____ type of ayumi song I have no idea if I can put ourselves there are not./
