[2007] Ayu's vibrato thing

Ok, Ayu's vocal style and skills have progressed and evolved over the years.
As someone who has studied voice and is a singer herself, I think I've come to understand the aspects of Ayu's voice. But one thing puzzles me...
sometimes Ayu will be singing her little heart out and at the end of a long note her jaw moves back and forth and she creates this random extreme vibrato. Do you guys know what I mean?
if you do, do you like it or no?
what are your thoughts on how and why she does it?

Terri 12th January 2007 07:11 PM

I know exactly what you mean.

She probably does all the jaw movements to get a vibrato because she can't do it just using her vocal chords...

At first I thought it sounded/looked pretty stupid, but now it's like an Ayu trademark :laugh

I'm cool with it

btw, that avatar is SWEET

Chandrachan 12th January 2007 07:18 PM

True I've noticed it too - I like it - it's kinda like her trademark which makes her voice more unique - it sounds good aswell exspecially when Ayu's singing ballads

SnowDrop 12th January 2007 07:24 PM

It sounds fine when it she uses it in small doses, but recently (and also during the RAINBOW-Memorial Address era) I believe she has been exaggerating the vibrato...

Delirium-Zer0 12th January 2007 07:33 PM

She should do the natural, quicker vibrato like she did for "I am..." and "(miss)understood". Doing the really extreme, slower vibrato like she does now and did in the RAINBOW-A BALLADS-Memorial address era for one thing makes her sound like she's on the wrong note, and for another thing doing it with your jaw is really really not good and should only EVER be done by opera singers when they need to project the vibrato more... it's bad for your voice if you do it like that too much. It's not that hard to do it with your voice, and ayu's probably done it plenty of times, but she seems to prefer doing the slow vibrato for some reason. I think it sounds awful, and it's REALLY irritating to watch x_x.

ImpactBreaker 12th January 2007 07:35 PM

It never bothered me, except for the re-recorded versions of A BEST 'cause her vibrato sounds strangely metallic.

Terri 12th January 2007 07:40 PM

Yeah, when Ayu milks it out it sounds like she's trying too hard...

//hikari 12th January 2007 08:07 PM

her vibrato is horrible. It makes her sound all over the place and unable to hold her note.

SKYia 12th January 2007 08:12 PM

I like it, but I think she recently overuses it esp while singing Jewel live, she does it too often and in parts of the song that are sort of "clean" in album version and pv. I guess she was also overusing it during Arena Tour 2006 A in the second part (Heaven! - IMO the song loses much because of it), I had the feeling that she did that just of "laziness" (it definately makes singing easier) although she may just find it better than a pure, clean sound. I like it occasionally, but recently it irritates me :P

OT - neo daydream, amy lee is hotness in your sig

and on topic ... i dont understand whatchoo mean

Larisa-chan 12th January 2007 08:38 PM

I never understood what happened to her vibrato. If you listen to LOVEppears you'll hear that it sounds absolutely fine and quite pretty. It's not some weird waa-waa-waaa thing like she does it now.

criminal 12th January 2007 08:41 PM

I've noticed that thing during the recent JEWEL lives and I must say I really admire her skill at doing the vibrato. It sounds almost unhumanly to achieve that kind of a sound when you have only one or two takes, I would've thought it takes about 10 tries in a studio to get it to sound right, but no, she pulls it off great! :D

Ayu_Jayson 12th January 2007 09:07 PM

Now that u mentioned it, yeah she does move her jaw. I think it helps to enhance the voice she projects, perhaps some new technique? The "A-Techinique"?

Next time I'll be sure to watch out for that special move =)

Olw---A 12th January 2007 09:16 PM

well vibrato is not a thing that i love so much... I hate it more exactly. but it's natural for some singers to do that. When Ayu use it; that's for 2 resons : be sure to get the note (and try to get it at the end), and keep the note getting more powerfull.
but in many performances you can see that qhe can keep the note without it : it depends the high of the note (she only does that with deep note) and the duration of it.

Well finally I accept it as her new technique : she have now a strategy to avoid the wrong notes so... i think she have to keep it. But in CDL 04-05 like on MY STORY tour she didn't use it that much

Lumix 12th January 2007 09:55 PM

I think she moves with the jaw on purpose.. to give the vibrato some juice (eye candy possibly?) =)

I'm okay with that, it kind of shows off the Ayu power.

Delirium-Zer0 12th January 2007 10:53 PM

Eye candy? more like eye vinegar x_x I think she does it because it's easier than doing it properly, in your throat. Bad for the jaw muscles though.

you're wasting your time ... they will always think its kawaii-desu-chibi-ja-ne~*~*^^; even when its harmful. they're blinded and can't handle truth.

~*Mabushii*~ 12th January 2007 11:03 PM

Yea she does it and I've noticed.. I don't really spend that much time staring at her jaw.. so it doesn't really bother my really.. and i dont think it sounds awful either

alt.total-loser 12th January 2007 11:05 PM

Her vibrato sucks. Really.

ohsixthirty 12th January 2007 11:13 PM
