Those non-Johnny's Boysbands...

Hey! =)

Humm... I was just wondering about how those other boysbands are doing on the Japanese market...
I'm not talking about Johnny's ones [KAT-TUN, arashi, NewS, TOKIO, SMAP, Kinki Kids, ect....]

I was specially wondering about the sales of those Avex's boysbands
I remember this boysband that performed during the last A~Nation '06
[Major of Road, don't know if you know anything about them]

Do someone have some ORICON numbers or some informations ?
I know for exemple that EXILE sold quite some albums for their last album (that was released 1 week after A BEST 2's release)
Please, don't just talk about Johnny's, everybody here may know about their fame...
:innocent

Maybe not a very interesting thread, but I'm curious to know some facts of other groups =)
I don't think only Johnny's are present on the Japanese Music market for the boysbands, even if they sell a huge number of products, I'm wondering if being a Johnny's is important for a boysband to be 'famous' [Big seller]

Halla 4th April 2007 11:26 PM

I don't know much about boybands , but EXILE is very succesful. I think they're the biggest selling act/artist on Rhythm Zone.

Koda Kumi is going to earn that title very soon at this rate tho, she might have already.

minkAYuko 4th April 2007 11:34 PM

I dun know about other boy bands or boybands in general, I dun like them cause some remind me of BSB and stuff I dun like! but I just recently learn about Johnny's Boysbands and I have to say kanajni8 RULE!!!

lol!

b´z is a boy band no? or.. regular group? I don.t know.

Sim' 4th April 2007 11:57 PM

A duo maybe ? =/

Like Tackey & Tsubasa, WaT or what was Shuuji to Akira with Kame & YamapI
I also didn't include Avex's AAA since it's a mix of boys& girls

Also, I didn't even talked about Mr.Children because... Well, it's Mr.Children xD

ayu_fan929 5th April 2007 12:39 AM

EXILE is one and off the top of my heard, w-inds.?

kiseki89 5th April 2007 03:16 PM

w-inds are under avex? I have no idea...
Well i like t&t. As for EXILE - i dun get their music

Hazuki 5th April 2007 04:56 PM

w-inds. They're pretty good. They're under PONY CANYON, I believe~!

I think it's easier to be in a boyband and be a part of JE, most of them are under that company though..

Both Tackey & Tsubasa and Shuji to Akira are from Johnnys.

Other than Johnnys, I can think of Mr.Children, B'z, WaT, w-inds, LEAD, FLAME, EXILE...

I only know that sales by Mr.Children and B'z are really very good.

^Yup I just started to like Kanjani8!! Their songs are so different from other JE boybands!

Dustie 5th April 2007 09:39 PM

Perhaps TOKIO?... They're like a boyband that plays instruments and writes their own song xD

There's one year difference between Koda's and EXILE's debut, but they gained recognition earlier, around their third album, with Choo Choo Train, which sold like million copies... their albums sold considerably well, unlike Koda's... but then Koda had BEST albums, so I think sales wise she's probably outdone them already...

Hazuki 5th April 2007 09:58 PM

^ TOKIO is a JE band also~ :yes

i really think Johnny's Ent. sets the standard for male groups in Japan. i don't think many boy bands outside JE can make it to their status. the only ones i can think of are EXILE & w-inds. maybe FLAME & Lead also (they're under Pony Canyon with w-inds.) i don't really count B'z & Mr. Children because they're not boybands, more like rock groups (well, B'z is a duo).

KANJANI8 is awesome! 8D they're sooooo hilarious.

They're also under the same management as Namie.

and WaT.

Isen't it kind of like the H!P thing, only a LOT bigger and older? The groups uses the same type of promotion and has somethihng similar to a monopoly on that market (boy band market), so the potensial fans will automatically discover johnny's boys before anything else? I also heard that managements may be getting in trouble if they try to challenge johnny's entertainment with similar groups.

JE is more idol-based than H!P. also, JE members don't graduate, haha. i've read articles saying that JE is a monopoly, but i don't know. i just think Johnny Kitagawa is really good at marketing his groups.

JE has their own up & coming stars that they place in a category called the "Johnny's Juniors". after the boys audition and get into the Jimusho, they're placed in this category as training to become a full-fledged idol. these Juniors even have their own TV show called "Shounen Club" where they perform. they also back-dance for their "sempais" at music shows. so, even though they're not releasing music, these Johnny's Juniors have a fanbase established!

i think that's why KAT-TUN has been so successful. they were formed back in 2001, even though they just released their first single a year ago. YamaPi has been a favorite amongst the fangirls even before NEWS debut back in 2004.

i do hear about JE challenging other management companies, even having a special deal with ORICON. but, who knows? :shrug (i have a few JE magazines myself & they promote musicians other than their groups. i see WaT photoshoots all the time! but that's my 2 cents.)

miniayumi 12th April 2007 09:53 AM

Anyone mention AAA? they aren't necessarily all boys but most of them are. But wow... to be a non JE boy band in Japan. Kind of hard isn't it?

Sim' 25th April 2007 09:00 PM

LMAO I'm SO confused right now xDDDD

I was the 1st to believe T&T are JE right ? @_@
[Everybody here was confirming this]
But then, I came across ORICON charts where I was shocked to see them labeled under AVT [Avex Trax]
And then there is this link :

http://www.avexnet.or.jp/tackeytsubasa/index.html
Tackey & Tsubasa Official Website... Under Avex ?? O.o

Is it me or are there 2 T&T groups ? One in JE, the other one in AVT ? xD
[No it's not me xD]
Humm.... WTH ???? T&T are what then ? xDD JE or AVT ?

PS : cartoon KAT-TUN II You doesn't seem THAT successful... 270.976 for 1st week?
Yeah, I remember someone said here that JE sell more singles than albums~

ll moments ll 25th April 2007 09:39 PM

not all Johnny's Entertainment groups are under the "Johnny's Entertainment" record label. only Shounentai, KinKi Kids, & NEWS are. Arashi & KAT-TUN are under J-Storm (though KAT-TUN has their own label, J-One, under J-Storm). TOKIO's under Universal-Music, KANJANI8's under TEICHIKU, & SMAP's under Victor Entertainment.

it just so happens Tackey & Tsubasa, as well as V6, are under avex trax.

the record companies only host their music for distribution. JE decides when to release it. they're basically management. (that's why you see AVT for T&T, even KAT-TUN appears as JON, instead of JE).

another example would be Namie Amuro. her music's distributed by avex trax, but she's under VISION FACTORY management. hope that helps! :)

regarding KAT-TUN's album: i was actually hoping for a 300,000+ opening week (since their singles have opened above 400,000+), but yeah. JE albums don't do as well as singles. KinKi Kids & Arashi albums generally do as well as a single release.

Sim' 25th April 2007 09:53 PM

AAH I see now, thanks a lot for all these informations =D
(Oh, I didn't know KAT-TUN had their own label =O)

Yeah, I knew for Namie Amuro, but not for JE =)
[I always had this image of SUPER rivality between AVT & JE, every label trying its best to sell the most, that's why I was so confused to find T&T Official Website under AVT xD]

That really helps, thanks again ll moments ll ^.^
(Will sleep better tonight as I learned new things xD)

ll moments ll 25th April 2007 10:17 PM

i was surprised to find out T&T & V6 were under avex as well! (i thought they had a rivalry too. XD) but i guess not.

yep, Johnny Kitagawa gave KAT-TUN their own record label as a gift for their debut. J-Storm is specifically for Arashi as well, but sometimes JE uses it for special products like soundtracks too.

ayu_fan929 25th April 2007 11:14 PM

The rivalry is probably just limited to the management companies. i.e. JE vs. Vision Factory.
