French Music Discussion Thread ~Introduction~

Hey Everyone!
I just checked the forum to see if there are many threads on French music, and they all seem to have died a while ago. So, I thought I might take the liberty to re-start the discussion.
Feel free to talk about any french artist/band! The French music industry doesn't seem to be that successful globally, so I thought I might introduce some of my favourite artists/bands to you!

Firstly, my personal favourite, and a relatively popular artist on AHS:

Émilie Simon
Genre: Experimental Pop, Electronica
Studio Albums: Émilie Simon (2003), Végétal (2006), The Big Machine (later 2009)
Notable Songs: Fleur de Saison, Dame de Lotus, Désert, Flowers, Opium, Alicia
Brief Description: Firstly, I read somewhere that she is one of Kanon Wakeshima's role models!! I hear Émilie's influence more in Kanon's vocals than in her music though. Anyway, her music is hard to compare to any others', however she has been called the 'French Bjork,' but I think Émilie's much better. She sings both in French and English.

Here are some of her music videos (they're amazing! :love):
Fleur de Saison: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMDunGVx7uU
Dame de Lotus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qf5olM0v9-w

Secondly:

AaRON
Genre: Pop
Studio Albums: Artificial Animals Riding On Neverland (2007)
Notable Songs: Endless Song, U-Turn (Lili), Le Tunnel D'Or, Beautiful Scar
Brief Description: AaRON are not very well known, even in France. The band is comprised of Simon Buret (singer, author and composer) and Olivier Couriser (composer and arranger). They have some really beautiful songs and I would say they are most like Coldplay. They make heavy use of the piano in most of their songs. As far as I know, they sing all their songs in English, with the exception of Le Tunnel D'Or (which is my favourite). They are definitely worth a listen!

Here are some of their music videos:
Le Tunnel D'Or :love : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ALslEVwozY
U-Turn (Lili): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJRh0PlWB6g

Lastly (for now):

Yelle
Genre: Electropop
Studio Albums: POP-UP (2007)
Notable Songs: Ce Jeu, A Cause Des Garçons, Les Femmes, Je Veux Te Voir
Brief Description: Yelle's music is cheeky and fun, a lot ligher than the previous two artists/bands. If you like any of Yasutaka Nakata's acts, then give Yelle a listen! She sings almost exclusively in French.

Here are some of her music videos:
Je Veux Te Voir (the beginning is an exerpt from another song): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y99UqvgCmE8
A Cause Des Garçons: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDUAnhtt1xM

Alizée
Genre: Pop, Rock, Electropop
Studio Albums: Gourmandises (2000), Mes Courants Électriques (2003), Psychédélices (2007)
Notable Songs: J'en Ai Marre, Moi Lolita..., A Quoi Rêve une Jeune Fille, Fifty Sixty, L'Alize (and many more :))
Brief Description: Alizée's first two albums were written by Mylène Farmer, and were both very popular in France and around Europe. I don't know much abour her, but she also seems to be popular thoughout AHS. From what I've heard, she's a very good artist!

Here are some of her music videos:
Moi...Lolita: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDwKPGUIVME
J'en ai marre: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=240S04eCCC0

No problems, I like it when people appreciate music!! Ye, Yelle's music can be a bit wierd sometimes, but her album is quite good. :D Besides, French electropop is very rare atm (at least from my experiences).

OMG I just listened to Alizee's 'Fifty Sixty' and I must say I am very impressed!! thank you! :shughug

@JackieRos - ARGH! :confused I'm not good at french-japanese music connections, but Emilie Simon's 'Dame de Lotus' ('Lotus Woman' :rolleyes) and 'Opium' are really good songs with Oriental elements.

JackieRos 29th June 2009 04:52 AM

Mois dix Mois is japanese

emi♡ 29th June 2009 05:18 AM

yey I love J'en Ai Marre.

My favorites from Alizee are:

J'en Ai Marre
Moi Lolita...
L'Alize
Gourmandises
J`ai Pas Vingt Ans
Lui ou Toi
A Quoi Rêve une Jeune Fille :heart
Youpidou
Veni Vedi Vici

I just watched those Emilie Simon videos, and I love them! I just got Yelle's discography, so I'll be listening to that for the next few days, and maybe Emilie too, depending on when my download finishes.

I think I'm really liking Emilie a lot. I'm excited for her discography.

I think electropop is very rare in french music so, I think it should be interesting...French music has a very interesting sound in their respective genres, I've been looking for more for a while, but...I got lazy downloading Japanese underground stuff lol

jbrat2219 29th June 2009 05:21 AM

Hey does anyone know this french rock chick... her name was Marie... I think but I can't remember her full name...?

Andrenekoi 29th June 2009 05:57 AM

Émilie Simon ir pure love!

But I'm going to pimp my Frech diva here!

Mylène Farmer
Genre: Pop
Studio Albums: Cendres de Lune (86), Ainsi soit je... (88), L'Autre... (91), Anamorphosée (95), Innamoramento (99), Avant que l'ombre... (05), Point de Suture (08)
Notable Songs: Libertine, Sans Contrefaçon, Pourvu qu'elles soient douces, Ainsi soit je, Désenchantée, Je t'aime mélancolie, XXL, California, Rêver, Je te rends ton amour, C'est une belle journée
Brief Description: As far as I know (I'm not frech), the easier way to describe Mylène would be by saying that she is the French equivalent to Madonna: Her music videos are fantastic and meanful, her concerts are huge and considerated to be among the best, her albums sells like hot cakes and she is the artist with the most number 1 hits on France (second is Celine Dion). The singer songwriter (she wrote all her songs but some on the first album) is also known by her deep and complicated lyrics, her taste for talking about sex and death and her touch to be aways surrounded by controversies or mysteries. It's the first mainstream singer to have frontal nude scenes on MV (Libertine and Pourvu qu'elles soient douces) and had some videos banned from TV in Frace!^^ BTW, she is kind of a mentor to Alizeé, she and Laurent Boutonnat (her producer and main composer) produced Alizeé's first 2 albums and kind of trained her in order to keep her image and be a popstar!

I really like Paris Combo too, but don't know much about them

untitledforayu 29th June 2009 06:23 AM

^ ^ wow, thanks Andrenekoi!, I have to check Mylène out...
Ooh I like Libertine a lot! :)
Reccommendations like that isexactly what i wanted on this thread :yes

Oh, right, totally misunderstood! Umm...correct me if I'm wrong, but judging from your profile you're a rock fan? I'm no expert on anything harder than Green Day lol, but my friend likes J-Rock bands like Dir en Grey and the gazette too and he liked this French band called Gojira for a while.

Indochine are a well known and long-living rock band, I've listened to a couple of their songs, but they're not really my thing, though they seem quite popular. Also, the BB Brunes were quite big when I was last in France. They're a bit softer but their song 'Dis-Moi' is pretty good.

Andrenekoi 29th June 2009 07:04 AM

My favorite videos from Mylene:

Comme j'ai mal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hex3HV5s97Y
Je te rends ton amour: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPBzfo9sj1Q
C'est une belle journée: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yY0OY0LbjeU
L'amour n'est rien: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ck4idxiac44

Je te rends ton amour is a litte... x-rated... with some controversial scenes (this one was banned from French tv). So, if someone here has problems with this kind of stuff... well, it's warned!

Handjan 29th June 2009 08:00 AM
