Well, Ayumi Hamasaki is, in my eyes, Queen of Reinvention for Japan, hah. She literally changes with every album, and there have been many times that it was drastic, yet it's always worked.
I don't think Kumi has reinvented herself fully ever. She's been pretty much exactly the same since the very beginning, hah. Goofy girl in a sexy costume, making pop and R&B/hip-hop music with techno/electro inspiration. It's not a bad thing that she's always been like this, but she doesn't belong on this poll, I don't think.
And Amuro.... I've stated my opinion about her before, so I won't go much into it. But even though she has gone through a few really big career changes, it seems more of a sell out than a reinvention for any reason. :no

As for Western artists, both Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera had similar reinventions, but they were both huge. And it somehow worked very fluidly, hah.
Madonna has reinvented so many times, of course, just like her follower Ayumi. :P
Michael Jackson..... He's somebody who either ended up reinventing himself for the worse, or he just tried really hard to reinvent... Either way, I'll vote for him still, because it's the thought that counts. XD
I honestly haven't ever noticed Beyonce reinvent herself at all. Same with Kylie Minogue. (But of course, I have never payed attention to the latter--but still! :innocent)

Ayumi, needless to explain.

Beyoncé went through her first big reinvention now, and it worked wonders... Even if her collaborations with Gaga don't really fit on this, I am... Sasha Fierce made Beyonce going from a girl with big ass and little clothers to a classy sexy woman.

Madonna, needless to explain.

I would add David Bowie^^

I don't see a huge re-invention on Namie actually... she only had 2 images trough her 15 years career... The sexy dance music teen idol and the powerful sexy hip-pop diva

Britney went from virgin girl next door to be the most sexual pop singer alive... Still, she only had those 2 images and is stucked on the 2nd one for a while...

Christina really worked once, when she was the manufaturated teen idol... since she started seeking for respect, she turned out into a 2nd tier pop diva

Maybe I will be killed by her fans, but I don't see huge changes on Koda too... IMO she is doing the same thing over and over again since she became big... even if sometimes she tends more to the sexual side, and sometimes to the cute side, it is always the same thing...

Kylie done the teen pop princess on the 80s, the indie girl on the 90s and the eletropop diva on the 00s... Still, her results are average at the best... (I mean... besides her peak, Ayu always outsells her, and Ayu have a much smaller selling area)

Michael kept changing, had his HUGE peak, went crazy and after that, he ceased to reinvent himself... Maybe he though he was too good to change...

^ Oh, I forgot about Beyonce's Sasha, since I don't listen to her.... I still stand by my decision on her though, since this is the only thing she's ever done.

Aditmi Krisnasaki ~II~ 23rd March 2010 07:37 AM

Ayu - well, back in the 1999

Namie - her voice back in the 90s is so awful, I can't believe "Can You Celebrate?" sold more than 2million and be one of the best-selling japanese single ever??? please~
but with "PLAY" and "PAST < Future" she really made me fell in love with her! :yes

Kuu - yeah.... TRICK is her first album to have wonderful vocals.. but I just can't stand with ~First Things~ TT

Christina AGuilera - AWESOME as always... her career's up and down...

debut album in the TOP, the Stripped down the river TT and the back again to the awesome 2006's "Back to Basics" :yes
