Utada's english album flopped, and I don't think BoA has anything that will set her apart from other artists. I saw Utada's CD at wal-mart when it came out, so I was optomistic, but it just kind of came, and went.
I don't know if it's an image thing, or if it's just that the music itself just isn't made for the mainstream American audience. I'd love some japanese artists to make some sort of splash over here, but the reality of it is that it's too much of a risk for the labels to put that much money into these artists, and without huge backing they just kind of come and go.
These artists really have a niche appeal in the states when it comes down to it, and nothing more. It's a little sad, but then again it might not be the same if one of your favorite Japanese artists truley blew up big over here. They'd have to change up their sound, and/or image to even hope to do anything substantial.
