Ayu is still alive in the hearts of the Japanese youth

My students are having their school festival this weekend and I was pleasantly surprised to see not one, but five different Ayu songs chosen for the karaoke/dance competitions! Since there are only 15 classes at the school, that means 1/3 of the classes chose Ayu!

The songs chosen were Inspire, Bluebird, Fairyland, M and My All. I think the summer songs are popular because it is summer, and they are upbeat. I was particularly surprised by My All since that is an album track!

And then just this morning, one of my students was talking about her hobbies and she said that she liked listening to music, and her favorite artist is Ayumi Hamasaki.

I think at first What? Ayu still alive?! But then after reading it I become happy knowing that Ayu is not a some senior beautiful-famous singer in the eyes of the Japanese Youth...

I've been here for a year now, and this week was the first time any students expressed interest in Ayu. People always talk about how she's old, or washed up, so I was just happy that a lot of students were still expressing interest in her.

I agree. But Japan is very much a country of out with the old and in with the new - so after 10 years of popularity, I'm not surprised that some people have developed this idea about Ayu.

Oh, and one more thing, the class doing Inspire learned the dance from the PV! The flailing motions look kinda funny without a sandy beach though...

One of the other teachers will be recording it for the third year's graduation video, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to get a copy. I'll try! (I wish I had a video camera of my own)..

Wow that's awesome!
Thanks for letting us know!

No wonder they chose MY ALL, she must've been getting the crowds sensitive while singing that in her tour as MY ALL ringtone suddenly popped at the beginning of this week chaku uta/full charts ^_^.

ayu is still one of the most popular japanese female artists in Japan after 10 years!
Her last album sold over half a million and her last single almost 200,000.
I wouldn't wash her out yet
I'm glad that junior high/high-school students still like her!

I read it wrong I thought it just said Ayu is still alive. So you can imagine me going like "...of course she's still alive." But oh well my mistake.

Its great that the students like ayu. Its means that Ayu can reach out to everyone and not just her generation...or people in her age group.

I still love Ayu and as long as she makes good music I'll keep on loving her

Is that teacher also filming the other Ayu songs?

No, not Namie, she's FAR less popular than Ayu. Most of their energy is spent on various Johnny's Entertainment groups, KAT-TUN, and Koda Kumi (before the rotton fluid incident). Koda Kumi is still pretty popular now that the badness is blowing over, and other artists like Ayaka and Yui, who are fresh to the music scene (relatively) get a lot of attention. Aoyama Thelma was really popular up until her CD came out, and then they kinda stopped talking about her.. I don't know why. Oh, and Hikki has a loyal following (kinda funny because she's been around longer than Ayu - but I guess she is younger).

Ah wow thx for the update! It was really fun to read! ^^ Go Ayu GO!

And yes, its sad that some ppl are so obsessed with age. Lol, 30 isnt anything to talk about! I wont have an argument before she nears an age of 50. Really. Havent ppl seen Sex and the City? Versy fresh, very young spirited women in their 30-40 years (dependning on with season/ the movie youre watching). Anyways, age isnt dependning on time, its on your actions imo. And Ayu is still very young, very fresh and very spirited. FAR away from "old" imo! ^^
