Kinda interesting theory on "my name's WOMEN" title.

While reading Hamlet this year, one soliloquy kind of stood out to me and reminded me of Ayu (...I actually wrote "Ayu! my name's WOMEN!" in the book, but don't tell my teacher ). I won't post the whole thing, but there's one key line:

"Let me not think on't—Frailty, thy name is woman!— "

Everyone's always been baffled by the engrishyness of my name's WOMEN. Now, it's kind of out-there to believe that Ayu read Hamlet (in english, on top of it all) and thought "WHOA this is a totally symbolic title for my next song!", but you never know. Plus it's kind of interesting to think about - "Frailty, thy name is woman", and the song is all about how women aren't frail or weak. It's an interesting bit of irony that I could see Ayu using, to name her song my name's WOMEN (since women = frailty, and ayu = WOMEN, ayu = frail, which is the irony since the song is about the exact opposite).

Just a little observation that I thought was kinda interesting.

Nice find... I suppose she could have read Hamlet or watched a play of it or something... but she would have named the song "thy name's woman"... I guess she added her own thoughts into the title as well...

Like how women is plural; it gives the impression that she's representing all women with the song... and yeah similar content to the one in Hamlet.

P.S: Naughty girl! You'll have some explaining to do if your teacher sees that! XD

I read "Catcher In The Rye" and there is a part where Phoebe, the main characters sister, tries to reach a gold ring while riding a carasoul (they used to do that back then, but kids kept falling off or something. So they stopped) and the lyrics in "Catcher In The Light"
*If you only look
You will never get it

If you only look
It will never be yours*

Reminded me of that too xD Seeing as how that's from a book to

It's a coincidence. The opposite of what Ayu sings about is a concept that has been around forever.

So naturally, it would fit in with a lot of other stuff in literature, music, culture etc.

I actually really wish that Ayu read Hamlet and derived the name from it lol, but knowing her...I'd bet my life she just came up with it because of the things associated with the word woman and being a woman.

She must have read these Shakespeare novels... otherwise where did she get the idea of sappy love stories in her tours?

Honestly speaking, I think Ayu is busier watching Heroes or something though if she came up a PV/something similar to the 12th night it'll be so awesome!

Yeah, she is representing all women. That's like, one of my favorite songs from her, love the lyrics!

Isn't the name like this cuz it's like "I am taking in the name of all women in the world"?

There is nothing wrong with the tittle...

I think it's likely that she's read Hamlet to be honest...I remember my friend, Kaori, talking about she was studying Shakespeare in school when she was younger.

Ayu is a lot more intelligent than people credit her for. XD

I'm aware that it's most likely a coincidence, but we'll never know for sure, so it's interesting speculation.

I've always considered the song title to be Ayu's very own "I'm Every Woman" (Chaka Khan)-type song.

But now that you mention this...It sounds much more accurate than my theory.

Nice find! Drawing parallels between Ayu's ideas and other sources of art such as literature reminds me of... well, studying literature at school. The crazy concepts people come up with about how the writers arrive at their ideas. XDD

I never drew the link between the title Catcher in the rye with Catcher in the light before. It IS the same wording. That's kinda cool. Maybe Ayu liked the title of the book? A "Catcher in the..." phrase isn't all that common.

I thought 'My name's women' was supposed to mean that Ayu wanted to speak on behalf of women. She acts like a spokesperson for women who have to face people saying things like "Weapons are a woman's tears", so Ayu tells them 'We don't cry easily" etc.

It could definitely have been one of ayu's inspirations though not very likely lol! I was thinking it was more of a sisterhood thing but that's an interesting explanation.
