http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-b...0091218a1.html I couldn't agree more with this article. Fashion and trends come and go. Good music is eternal. Last edited by Polyrhythm; 18th December 2009 at 10:02 PM. |

I read superlatives as superlaxatives XD
but Biggest threat: Korean boy bands and girl idols who can actually dance, sing and rap

I think this article is kind of bad, it really puts Amuro Namie and Hamasaki Ayumi in a bad light, like they dont have talent or so... this is really a strange article, kind of biased.

Exactly. I agree with the assessment that Utada is ONE OF the most influential artists, but it is completely obvious that this writer has serious biases. I also can't really take it seriously when he elevates such a little known band like MONGOL800 so much - as if they were actually on the same level as the other people in the article.

Yeah...this article definitely seems biased to me. :S
If they want people to take what they're saying seriously, they shouldn't do others down. |

^^Really? I think the article just barely touches on those two artists and only mentions Namie's "enduring popularity" and Ayu's "royalty status." That doesn't seem to put them in such a bad light 0_o Yes it does mention the fact that Utada "leapfrogged" Amuro...but that's not like saying "Oh, Hikki rocks, Namie sux"...its just saying that by being a female artist who pioneered the R&B style in Japan, she was influenced by the whole urban scene she grew up in...and people found it very new and interesting.
![]() This is an opinion piece so of course there will be a certain amount of bias...but it does make very valid points. Last edited by Polyrhythm; 18th December 2009 at 10:48 PM. |

It's absolutely true though. Koda Kumi CAN sing, but what made her tremendously popular was good marketing. That's a fact, it's not up to discussion: what made her huge was Avex huge marketing blitz, not her talent.

I agree that Utada is the most influential pop artist of the decade on Japan... but yeah... they pretty much put it like Ayu is just a beautiful one hit wonder o.O
If someone asks me (what no one will xD) I would say that most of today female jpop stars are kind of a strange mix between Utada and Ayumi, with some (and lots) of touch of uniqueness sometimes |

I agree with them...to an extent.
But I definitely agree that if they wanted to be taken seriously, they shouldn't retain those positions on those other artists, and even if they do, they should NEVER publicly say it. It makes them seem like major *******s. And as much as I'm happy for my hikki to have a status she rightly deserves, I would never ever side with these people, post or recommend their publication anywhere else, because I don't endorse this kind of writing, which is not only completely unprofessional, but rude. I can't even really take them seriously because they made themselves seem like a bunch of lowly blog writers. It would be funny though...because a lot of what they did say was true, about the artists. Maybe they were going for honesty? lol Regardless...it's unprofessional.

congrats to Hikki. i think she is one of the most influential artists of the decade.
![]() though...the writer makes it seem that idol pop and marketing are bad things. say what you will, but i don't see why you have to dumb down their popularity just because Hikki is supposedly more "authentic" than idols or those driven by marketing. but tbqh, i have no idea who MONGOL800 are. and i think i have a good understanding of the j-music world. but...that's just me.

Ouch, I hate it when "journalists" take attitudes. =__= Just report the truth, and don't mix in your opinions...
Utada may undoubtedly be the most influential J-Pop singer of the decade, but this dude didn't have to get all Hikki-homeboy on us... >_>

This really put nobody in a bad lgiht except for Kumi. You guys are probably reading way into the "Hamasaki manques" statement too much.
They're talking about the idols who wanted to be like Hamasaki, not Hamasaki herself.
