-For her, the Billboard Live was an opportunity to sing to people who had never (seriously) listened to her songs before and to try and ‘persuade’ them with solely her voice. She felt she took a new step forward; she’s grown.

-On the one hand she’s glad she didn’t become a big hit at her debut because of the lessons it learned her.

-The interview summarizes her (unpopular) beginning.

-She has done performances in clubs where merely 3 people were present (before she got popular).

-She didn’t have much confidence in the past; when she won the Japan Record Awards with the song Butterfly, she wondered whether they should’ve really given it to her.

-When she was forced to quit her activities as an artist for a while (because of the ‘rotten fluids’ comments), she thought about quitting as an artist and trying out a different path. But Koda Kumi ‘told’ her, “It’s wrong to give up before you’ve fixed your mistakes, isn’t it? If you give up now, then what have these past 7 years been for?”

-Her comment did not only hurt other people, but also herself. It was a tough time, but she learned a lot; she’s grown as a person. She feels she understands other people’s pain better now.

-She thinks it’s important to live in the present.

-She’s still just a normal girl: “People often comment that Koda Kumi is an artist that embodies strength and beauty, but when I am at home, I am a human like everyone else, I have the same blood flowing inside me and I carry the same troubles.”

-She wants to keep breaking her own shell in order to keep changing and evolving.

-In the past she was negative and kind of paranoid; rather than trying to overcome public backlash, she just tried to keep silent and work. Nowadays she’s much more positive. Troubles/worries have become a positive concept to her, because feeling upset means you realize that you’ve lost something (and you can try to fix it).

-She feels ‘strength’ and ‘beauty’ are the same/are one. Beauty doesn’t show itself unless you also shine on the inside. In order to shine on the inside you need inner strength. And you need to have confidence in yourself in order to build up more inner strength. In her opinion, self-confidence doesn’t mean being self-centred or conceited, but being supported by the people around you.
