^I can't with japanese titles. I couldn't get into Maki Goto newer releases because almost all titles were in hiragana/kanji and that bothered me A LOT. I never knew what I was listening.
In the end, I have to change the titles to romanji and that can be burdersome. So I myself prefer English titles.

okay, so let me summarize it. Clearly you do not understand japanese (like most of us here), so you naturally do not understand lyrics of japanese songs while you are listening them, but that doesn´t bother you AT ALL and you can still enjoy listening Jpop.
But what bothres you A LOT is if the titles of songs are in japanese (hiragana/kanji, it doesn´t matter at all), not in English. Despite the fact that even if the title is in English, song is still sung in Japanese. I am not judging or anything, it just doesn´t make so much sense, that´s all ![]()

Actually I think it's a pretty ignorant reason to prefer English song titles just because you can't read/understand Japanese.

I don't really preffer if a song's title is Japanese or English but I can see how it could bother someone who can't read kanji that they can't 'recognize' the song they want to listen to because of the kanji looking similar (if you know what i mean).

Isn't that strange while you are listening to J-Pop to ask for them not to write the titles in Japanese? Moreover certain things just don't express in the other language? I never read something more absurd then this?! The whole song is in fricking japanese!

It is just more convenient to have the song title in a language you can read and understand. Then you can recognize what song is what. If it is not in English or romaji, the song title can not be read or pronounced. I don't see how that is offensive.
![]() For me personally, English titles make Jpop easier for me but it is okay if the title is in Japanese as well. |

I have a translation of the song title in parenthesis for this reason.

It's simply ignorant and since I was able as a 12 year old back then to recognize the songs and learn the song titles, I guess everyone else is also able to. If someone doesn't want to make any effort to learn how to recognize the song titles or to use romaji or translations other people already made, maybe the person should go listen to Katy Perry. |

I also don't think its that hard to tell the songs apart.
And I get the whole "It's more convenient thing" - but we are the ones that take from another culture, and they should be able to write in their own language and letters. The world isn't centered around the western world you know. It has nothing to do with me "not getting a grip" - its just really ignorant and cultural inappropriate to state something like that. Very narrow minded. If it bothers you so much, just change the damn title in itunes.

It's great that you were able to do that Chibi, still doesn't change the fact that it can be hard/er for other people.
But I agree with you that someone can change the title. And yes, it is ignorant to say that Japanese artists shall write their titles in English.

Oh my god, some people here can be very mean. I don't know japanese, I can't read kanji and I DO prefer if the title of a song is in English. Here's the tracklist of Shiina Ringo's debut album:
1 虚言症 5:25 2 浴室 4:15 3 弁解ドビュッシー 3:16 4 ギブス 5:38 5 闇に降る雨 5:03 6 アイデンティティ 3:05 7 罪と罰 5:32 8 ストイシズム 1:46 9 月に負け犬 4:14 10 サカナ 3:43 11 病床パブリック 3:16 12 本能 4:13 13 依存症 6:23 How am I supposed to tell each song apart from the other? if you can do that, if you can read kanji, then GOOD FOR YOU. But don't come here telling me I'm ignorant for prefering English titles like you're so superior. That would apply to all other languages that don't use the roman alphabet. I'm not knocking Hikki's house door demanding her to write music with English titles, I'm just talking about a personal preference, And Chibi, you're a very problematic person, go find some help, you arrogant. You say that, but 90% of the Jpop artists usually release songs with English titles, at least the main female ones, so I don't think it's strange since we're used to it.

Some of you people are absolutely ridiculous. ahtka-chan didn't come in here demanding that all artists cater to their preferences, they simply just stated what is easier for them, point blank.
If ahtka had come in saying something rude to the effect of "FINALLY she's using English titles again. I can't believe her last album had all Kanji - that was so obnoxious!" then this outrage from some members would make way more sense. But as it stands, you're acting elitist and obnoxious for no reason. Grow up. |

Wow-- thought that the new song dropped early on the radio or something and here y'all are just arguing about song titles for a whole page.

well, I totally agree with Chibi-Chan here.
I can understand that most of us cannot read song titles if they are written in hiragana/katakana, but we are listening to Japanese music so it is completely natural that they are releasing songs with JAPANESE titles! It just takes a few minutes and a little effort to change titles of these songs in your iPod to romaji (道 - Michi; 俺の彼女 - Ore no Kanojo etc.), but expecting Japanese artists to be releasing songs with English titles is just ... stupid (sorry for that expression). Then we should ask all artists in the whole world to be only releasing songs with English titles (Chinese, Koreans, Russians, Polish), because what´s the difference? It is really egoistic to expect everything should be "westernised" instead of making a little effort and if having a trouble reading hiragana/kanji characters then change titles to romaji by myself so I have no trouble to read those titles and distinguish songs from each other. Like I said, I can totally understand that someone might have trouble recognise songs with Japanese titles, but for me it is really dull to say something like this "I couldn't get into Maki Goto newer releases because almost all titles were in hiragana/kanji" .. really?? You cannot enjoy listening to some artist´s music because some song titles are in the native language of the artist? And what does music have to do with song title? Music is not about that at all! You can listen a song not knowing its title and still like it.

^exactly. English it not the only way.
It has nothing to do with us (or in this case me) being able to read kanji. For the most part, i can#T but I memorized how they look and what the title is called. There is really nothing to it other then looking it up on a third class website that caters the english title. Most of you just don't get the point that it is just not okay to say something like "I just can't with Japanese titles" - thats the first step of racism because one actually think the english title is better just because the individual is able to read it. Thats exactly what it is behind it. Intended or not and I don't want to call anyone out, I just wanna state that it is just not okay to think like that.

And really, how many of you are japanese to begin with? It's funny to read so many strong opinions about japanese/language respect from white people. It like me, a man, advocating for feminism, or me, a white guy, talking about how hard it is to be a black man.
