[article] HYDE: CAN ONE OF JAPAN'S BIGGEST ROCK ACTS BREAK BIG IN THE US?

Excerpt:
Quote:
Based on its San Francisco debut at the Fillmore Thursday the Japanese band HYDE may be hard rock's answer to baseball's Ichiro Suzuki and Hideki Matsui.Hyde

That is, superstars in an American game who are considered the equals of their American peers, and whose country of origin is secondary to their abilities to entertain.

With a 90-minute set of original, dark and glistening hard rock, metal, and a couple of ballads, this tight quintet's sold out local debut was mesmerizing and primal, with more than a few similarities to David Bowie's U.S. debut decades back.

Ayumi herself said she doesn't want to come to the US so there's no point in hoping right now.

Anyways, HYDE's solo songs would definitely be more popular than the Laruku songs as far as breaking into America goes. "Countdown" reminded me a lot of popular (and good) rock songs. California is a good place for him to debut since there's a lot of diversity there.

Yeah, overall I prefer L'arcs stuff, but I love Hyde's solo material as well and it does sound more "Americanish." Especially Faith, which was recorded in LA using several American musicians and technitions.

I'm so happy that I got to see 3 of the 4 show and that they were all very successful. Although, a selfish part of me hopes that his popularity remains relatively "underground" here.

Yeah. Her sales are already very good in Japan. Why waste effort and time to make an english album?

My friend Julie would agree with you here. She's afraid that if something like that becomes mainstream, there'll be a lot of people who like it just because it's foreign, ya know?

^^i think that's exactly why there are some americans that like it. I used to be that way...but then J-pop (more specifically Ayu) just "captured" me...

good for Hyde, I hope he comes back! Was that his last show? or does he have another?

Yeah, I don't think we have much to worry about though. These shows did not come off to me like Hyde was trying to use them as a launching pad to make it big in the US, but that he was doing these shows only for the fans that he knows he already has here.

Not the best article - wish that they'd figured out that he wasn't a band, that L'Arc are still together and that they hadn't compared his appearance to Michael Jackson..ewwwww.

it would be great if he could become big in the US but he'd have brush up on his english and would he have time with his solo stuff and L'Arc?

Yeah, that Michael Jackson thing was just wtf? Hyde looks androgenous and young for his age - Johnny Depp I think would be a much better comparison.
