I think she does more good than bad so. And I very much appreciate her sexual image.

I love the chorus but the verses just grind my gears. |

That was the same theory I had! I always thought her character was a projection of both her needs and fears. And possibly the things she wishes she would have done differently in an attempt to hide/protect the "real" her. But Lizzy can sometimes been seen behind that character, especially live.

It bothered me at first, too, as I like my music as self-expression usually. But then I realized her persona is a means of self-expression for her and learned to love it. It's so skillfully constructed. She's a really smart and talented woman in so many artistic areas.

Yeah, now that I don't mind it so much...I just want her music to...hold me.
I haven't listened to the new EP yet, so, maybe we'll see.

She has a new perspective on the persona on the EP(acceptance rather than looking down on it) and a slightly softer, but also more sexual, tone to it. From what you wrote here it looks like you might like it.

I agree with everything. I think I like her as both Lana and Lizzy. I enjoy Lana's self destructive and sexual hedonism and I want to hold Lizzy and tell her everything will be ok.
I am very excited to see where she goes next, because what she's made is so transient. I wonder if we'll get a video where Lana "dies", and she'll perform as Lizzy again? I don't think she has the confidence to shed away Lana yet though. It's all so interesting. |

Personally I don't believe she's hiding herself at all. You may call me a blind stan, delusional even, but I think she's 100% herself in everything she does. Fakery is very easy to notice, and I definitely don't see it in Lana Del Rey at all. Old Hollywood glamour style is just what she likes, nothing else (and personally I'm quite in love with it too, tbh).
And what comes to her lyrics, I think those references to Marilyn Monroe and Elvis and what other are just some metaphors she uses. It doesn't make her any less true popstar than any other singer out there. Personally I love the lyrics she writes. It's her very original style and it's also one of the reasons why I love her music. Her lyrics are awesome and I feel that they are honest. If they weren't, there wouldn't be so much pain heard in her songs. That's how I feel about this.

We're not saying she isn't honest, and nor are we denying that her emotion is untrue. What we're saying is Lana, as a character who is able to say things like "my ***** tastes like pepsi cola", is not Lizzy. That's not fakery. It's, like isthisLol? said, projection. The problem is that her emotions are too strong to stay behind the Lana Del Rey mask. Lana is a safe way for her to explain her fears without being hurt, a way to explore things she wished she done differently.
I think it comes across quite clearly that she's terribly afraid of being criticised, and even more so of being unloved. So, if Lana is attacked, if Lana is unloved, it doesn't matter, because they're not saying it about Lizzy. Pretty much every song on Born to Die and Paradise is about her finding someone to love her. She's desperate to be loved, but no matter how much people love Lana, they're loving her creation, they're not loving Lizzy. It's strange. It's interesting. It's what makes her music so powerful. I think she just has a fascination with old-school Hollywood. I don't think it's a creation to hide behind, more just a stage persona to represent her love for that era.
But the different interpretations are interesting to read. Personally, I don't think it's that deep at all.

For most singers I would agree. But for Lana/Lizzy every detail is fine-tuned to perfection, be it in the videos, lyrics or compositions. I am quite sure Lana del Rey is more than just your average stage persona("Sasha Fierce", anyone?)

I agree with everything EXCEPT the vocals. I have a feeling that i have to force myself to listen to her music 10000 times before the vocals sink in with me. She sounds like a grumbler who just woke up from a 1000 year nap or something. But the compositions~~~ Oh yeah. (unrelated to Paradise EP: That's why I like video games: HARP!) |

![]() ![]() ![]() I think her vocals are simply polarizing and will forever be. The reason? She is voice-acting rather than singing I think. It's very expressive and diverse, but lacks the power and clarity most people associate with good vocals, especially in Pop music.

For those who didn't know, she didn't grew up in a rich family, she suffered alcohol addiction (around 15 years old i think) meth addiction, and one of her ex boyfriends is eithter dead or in prison, she only uses the name Lana Del Rey because she wanted a name as pretty as the music she made (her words) So i don't think it's just a persona..

She went to Fordham University to study Philosophy, tuition fees: 41.000 dollars/year. Not from a rich family you say?

My family is anything but rich and my tuition fees are $47,000. Things work differently in the US. But, anyways. I really don't care what her background is...I care about her ability to make music. I already feel that she's disingenuous, therefore her back story means nothing to me. So anyways...I only got to Body Electric...but I think that one is the best so far. About her vocals...I do hope she gets better live...cause I can't take her performances so far.

And her dad is rich. Very rich. He's not household name famous, but if you google him there's no shortage of information about him. That's not fiction. There are articles with her name in them, about her dad, before she became famous. Her "rehab" for alcohol addiction was a pricey private fee paying school. I think she changes when her addiction was anyway, just to make her going to private school seem "cooler" and not rich kid. I don't doubt it happened, but I think she was older. Maybe her college days.
It's why her music is full of daddy references, and Lana is pretty much the poster girl for the hipster-tumblr "It's cool to be poor" idea. She changes her story too much. She's been cited as saying Lana Del Rey comes from hanging with Spanish friends, a name as beautiful as her music, and something chosen by her managers and producers. It can't be all of them. She seems manufactured to me, like every other pop star in existence. She's like the pop star for the hipster market.
I think she's talented though I love her music and image (although she looks like she's had a lot of work done, lol). I'm waiting till the album is out next week and my Amazon order arrives before I listen to Paradise. I bought Blue Velvet and Ride on iTunes though, LOVE BOTH. |

Voice acting? I see where you're coming from. I have a feeling that if I looked at her from a "she's voice acting" approach, all will be fine.
