... The vast majority of these artists are uninspiring. It's like they could all sing each other's songs and not seem out of place.
NM is my favorite of the bunch, but Save me and Arigatou Forever... were a little too plain compared to 7 WONDERS. I hope her next single is less generic. lol sounds great. I like the K-Pop feel they have. But they still suffer from the same generic electronic pop sound. What made Ayu, Namie, Hikki and Koda different was they each had a certain mix they did well. Ayu was very elaborate, ethereal, big sounds, big melodies. Namie was R&B/Hip Hop dance and simple ballads. Utada was otherworldly, emotional, experimental pop -- she worked with a lot of different song styles. And Koda was slutty pop, you know, the kind of ass-shaking, throw off your clothes and have sex with yourself kind of pop... and a few ballads similar to Ayu's stuff here and there. Apart from their own styles, they each released things differently too. Koda released a ton of new music every year. Namie was sparse in her releases, but toured most of the year. And Ayu was about equal studio and touring time. Hikki is the artist that releases a few singles then an album that outsells everyone else then disappears again for a few years. But overall, all four of the big names were different from very early in their career. You couldn't mix up a Koda track and Ayu track, or a Namie track and Hikki track. You could easily tell what made a Koda tour a Koda tour and not an Ayu tour. And, for the most part, those things are still true today. None of these artists, barring Leo Ieiri and Kana Nishino, are different enough from each other to make me think any of them have a shot at moving forward. I did think Itano Tomomi had a good shot, but every release of hers is something different from the last one, enough so that I can't really tell what her music is. Her voice is at least distinctive. So, maybe the next big things are a little ways off. It did take 20 years before the 80s idols were swept away by Utada, Ayu, Koda, and Namie. We may not see the next big female artists for another 4 or 5 years. Edit: It's also worth noting that none of these artists are releasing material frequently enough to gain traction. With as much as 12 months between singles, and having debuted just a couple years ago, there's no way these artists are going to get enough attention to grow a fanbase.

^ I love your post. You can't explain it better.
I agree with you on your opinion about Tomomi. Her music is really good but it's a little sad that she fails on all (singing, dancing, attitude, popularity).

^She has a beautiful voice.
About Glim Spanky the two first songs are pretty basic but Shousou and Homero yo have more soul. Sometime I have some difficulties with her old smoker's voice though. NakamuraEmi has an original sound. I like her singing between melody and rap. I'll follow her ![]() I already heard the name of haruka to miyuki but I never tried their music before today. Shame on me. Their sound remind me 90's a bit. Quote:
JamFlavor is a new duo under Avex. It's formed of MA’LIL and HODAKA. Their debut song mixed jazz and r&b. Preview of their indie album touch my secret is a trio who consists of Anne (vocalist and guitar), Chloe(bass guitar and choriste) and Louie(drums). Like a paradise is a kind of ethereal rock while music sounds more as a usual jrock song. Finally, I have to present you the angelic and strong voice of Suzuhana Yuuko. She is the vocalist of the new group Wagakki Band who mixed traditional Japanese style with rock. Wagakki Band |

Time to cheat a little and bring up a mixed duo...
Introducing: GLIM SPANKY! ![]() GLIM SPANKY is a rock duo consisting of vocalist Remi Matsuo (the girl with the cool shades and an unmatched poker face, going by their videos) who also plays guitar and does their songwriting, art, and design, and Hiroki Kamemoto, who plays guitar. They have a cool, traditional rock sound (think Superfly, but maybe a little more modern), but for me, their big selling point is Remi's husky, scratchy, charismatic voice, which she uses like a goddamn champ. They just released a new mini album, Wild Side wo Ike, this week, and it's sooo good and everyone should go listen to it. The same goes for their studio album from last year, SUNRISE JOURNEY. Please check out the videos below and love them with me. Wild Side wo Ike Real Onigokko Shousou Homero yo Last edited by Kacku; 31st January 2016 at 09:24 PM. Sorry for double posting, but I've been listening to some rarely-talked-about female artists today and really felt like sharing, so... please forgive me?
First off, NakamuraEmi. (Yes, apparently she insists on spelling her stage name that way.) She's a singer-songwriter who's been around for some years already and released three volumes of NIPPONNO ONNAWO UTAU mini albums independently, and recently made her major debut with NIPPONNO ONNAWO UTAU BEST, which compiles together songs from her past mini albums and adds some new material. She does acoustic pop with her uninhibited, rap-influenced delivery giving her material a cool and unique edge. Check out some music videos: YAMABIKO Taifuu 18go Second: some people here listen to haruka to miyuki, right? I feel like I've seen people talk about them. For those who haven't heard of them before: haruka to miyuki are an alternative rock duo consisting of (surprise surprise) Haruka (vocals and guitar) and Miyuki (keyboard and background vocals). They released their first mini album in 2012, got signed to Sony next year, and now have five mini albums, one full album, and a big bunch of digital singles under their belt. They make very emotional alt-rock music, and I feel like they're expanding their sound with every new release: their two mini albums from last year, Sekai and LIFE, especially contain some really varied and amazing songs. I really recommend checking those two mini albums (and everything else too, ofc) out, they are really good and only get better with time. Also, since they are under Sony, only a few videos from their indies days can be found on Youtube because Sony is the worst. Good thing JPopsuki TV exists. Vanilla Usotsuki Sekai Haru no Ame |

well sayaka shionoya is there a long time, she was on a huge momentum (her singles gained more and more attention) but her first full length album kind of disappointed many people. in late 2015 she released a mini album, which i personally love!

Can't we expand the thread to male artists and bands?
Cause I've listened to the debut album by Edge of Life and it's damn good!

^oh oh oh if I had known that Edge of Life would be liked here, I would have shared their cds since the first single. We can always open a new thread for male artists. However I wouldn't mind at all if we could talk about every new artists in one thread.

That's why I also want a thread for new artists in general.
If you hadn't shared the album here, I'd have never tried them out. Btw. I appreciate every new artist posted here. Gonna listen to all of them as time goes by. ![]() Last week I listened through charisma.com's discography. I really like their current promo song for their new album, but their old stuff sadly isn't as good for me. Gonna check out the new album nevertheless.

Uh, this is great.
Her vocals are a bit of an acquired taste, but I love the song. @Kacku: Wohooo, found another KIRA fan! ![]() Really happy about that, as she is indeed really promising for the future with her first two albums. Her next release is a DVD of her first tour last year.

^Her vocal reminds me Kanon Wakeshima sometimes.
It seems that Miichan hasn't logged in since a long time. I don't want to expand her thread without asking her for it before. If she doesn't log in, I'll create another thread for all new artists and I'll add this one in the first post in reference for all the artists we already shared. Quote:
Maybe I'll try Faint★Star's last single as you like it. It's me who shared them but I wasn't a fan of their music. Ram. I don't know much about her. She debuted with Break up shite feat. AYA a.k.a.PANDA She already did a collaboration with DJ PMX in 2015 Sasaki Rico is a seiyu who will debut with the single Kasabuta/ Omoi no Kakera/ Dream Kuraima . I was afraid when I read on c-k-jpopnews she was a seiyu because of all the squeaky voices in anime's theme when the opening or ending are sung by seiyu. However her voice is beautiful. The song is very pop-rock anime-ish but it caught my attention; I don't know if it's because of her voice, the pv or maybe a certain kind of charisma. For whatever reason I want to hear more. Utae is a singer with experimental sounds. She's under the same label than Hatis Noit. Spoiler:
And finally Leola who debuted last month with Rainbow |

Wow, I like Celeina Ann. I 've listened to 19 and I like the bittersweet yet innocent vibe. Reminds me a bit of YUI. How come I've never heard of her until today.

Faint★Star's new single Never Ever is awesome! The title track and Hoozuki are both amazing songs, and Ms. Question isn't bad either. (The remixes are terrible though - I just up and deleted both of them, which is something I NEVER do.) I remember watching a video of their in this thread before and not being very impressed, but this single turned me curious, I'll definitely listen to their album now! Highly recommended listening!
Also, KIRA's SPACEY LOVE is everything.

Hitomi Kaji was mentioned here before and even though she has mostly made ballads so far, she is now about to release her first physical single in August "In my high heel" and it's way more up beat than her previous songs! The first teasers actually came out few hours ago
Here is her cove of Utada's Flavour of Life, and it is pretty amazing EDIT: I created her own thread http://www.ahsforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123015 Last edited by mabibitan; 7th July 2016 at 08:44 AM. |
