THE latest development in the on-off relationship between Japanese singers Ayumi Hamasaki and Tomoya Nagase is that they have just returned from a vacation in Los Angeles last week.

With their fingers firmly locked around each other's, no less!

Reporters bombared the couple with questions at the airport, but they would not comment.

Yet, the way Tomoya kept Ayumi close to his side was telling.

Both 28, they have been together for five years although there were rumours last year that she had left him for a younger Caucasian guy.

Early last month, Tomoya was photographed leaving Ayumi's apartment in Tokyo, sparking speculation that they were cohabiting.

Then, she flew to LA and stayed there for three weeks to record her new album and do magazine interviews.

Tomoya, who is the lead vocalist of rock band Tokio, only joined her for a short holiday after he completed his band's concert tour in mid-September.

Now the question the Japanese media is asking is: When will they get married?
