They don't even know. I don't usually bother telling people, but for the purpose of this thread, lets dramatize what happens in the few instances that someone has kept pushing for an answer...
Random Person: Woah! Your iPod is huge! Me: Yeah, I know. Its only because its 30 gigs and an older model RP: So, what do you listen to Me: Nothing that you'd know... (my default answer for the above question) RP: Like what? Me: Japanese stuff RP: Oh... thats cool. Can I hear some? Me: Sure (plays Ayu) RP: OK... thats pretty cool... *awkward silence* Either that, or they look through the iPod itself and they say "I don't know ANY of these people/songs" and hand the iPod back to me. On the off chance that someone takes interest in it, though, I'll get all excited and go off on some rediculously long rant about eurobeat, Ayu, Hands up/ how misunderstood CASCADA is in the US, or something like that. Which probably puts most people off, but for whatever reason, i can't help it. And like whoever else said (sorry, I didn't take note of the username), its usually just referred to as "that wierd Japanese stuff". But people don't really alienate me for it. Some of my friends don't care and some take interest in it, but they don't, like, hate me for it. If someone were to dislike me for my music choice, then I don't need them to be my friend anyways. And in response to whoever it was on the first page (sorry, didn't take note of the username again) that said its easier to listen to Asian music when you're Asian, hahahah... not always. There are some people (most people would call them d***** b***) who only further profile me because of my music choice. But whatever... i just avoid them/ignore them anyways. On the other hand, several of my friends/people-I-know-who-I-talk-to-but-aren't-really-my-friends listen to some obscure stuff. Not Japanese, but its obscure enough. Which, I guess thats always a good thing, because then its not like I'm the only one who listens to stuff no one else would know. *sigh*... This is why I need this forum as an outlet. It reminds me that I'm not the only person on the face of the planet who,listens to Ayu/ Japanese music... *sigh mk2*... I rant a lot...

Well there's a little Asian music fan community in my school and to be honest, eventhough the majority of music interest in my school is Indonesian, Western and Chinese, there's still a lot of J-Pop and K-Pop fans in my school
The good thing is the American stuffs fans didn't bash on us Asian music fans And I'm proud to say I'm the biggest Ayu fan im my school kekeke  But yeah, there's -oh-im-so-kewl-n-popular- kind of people who only listen to local music and thinks they're awesome  My friends said she's so pretty and young, and they respect her eventhough they're not a fan Super Junior is the most popular Asian in my school though And what I hate from most non-asian people is that they didn't respect other cultures that much and keep thinking they're awesome, but I'm still happy that all of you guys here are cool !!! well i can honestly say that no one outside of the anime club have ever heard of her. . .except one of my friends. . .but i have no clue how she ever found ayu. or her older sister. . .i think they just like foreign music. . .
 for the other good friends of mine who know they just consider it a unique quality to me or something. . .very off the stereotype

Since I have classmates no more, then I'll talk about my friends at the office. It's not different, if people meet classmates everyday and studying in same room, I meet my friends everyday too and work at the same room.
They like many different kinds of music and it's very nice they do appreciate JPop. When we feel like listening some Japanese stuffs I offer my Ayu's songs collection. Most of my friends also love the remix albums. So I think I don't have problems with my office mates

At my school (when I was a school girl), most of my friends never knew who Ayu is. But when I introduced them with Ayu, they just "Okay, she's quite cute" but still, they're not fans of Ayu. And for some friends who knew Ayu, they say, she's cute and she looks a lot like me (wtf??!)
but still not fans of Ayu.Then, after school life (I mean this year), I forced by the government to join the national service. Almost all my friends don't know who Ayu is. Most of them just listening to the local music. They say they don't want to hear any songs that they don't understand. srsly, wtf to them. That's all. Thank you

Half of my classroom know ayu because of me
and the other half don't know ayu There is something really bad happened to me One day, one of my friend came and told me that ayu has really bad voice and she think Girls' Generation is better!!!! Oh GOD! $#%@+& I don't like or dislike Girls' Generation. But I hate her now!!!!!

My friends know that I love Ayu for long time. They also know her but they prefer more K-pop. I don't care what they are said about Ayu. Some of them said Ayu have a bad voice and boring songs. They also said that K-pop is better. I know why they talking like that but they have to respect Ayu and not said bad things to her. One day, my another friend said SNSD is better than Ayu. I reply to him can each of SNSD girls singing 21 songs continuously in
solo? Now he embarassed and silent. I also think that a lot K-pop singers are Lip-sync. SoRrY fOr mY bAd eNgLisH. hOpE YOu cAn understand.

At my school, the asian population is minimal... like 3% of the school. :p
So generally nobody listens to asian music or knows of Ayu except for my Chinese friend who thinks she is "okay." She has a few songs on her iPod "Jewel" "Beautiful Fighters" "I am..." "Blue Bird" but isn't obsessed with her. She's more of a Kpop person. Anyone who steals my iPod always asks me, as the song I am playing is usually Ayu, "why you listening to Chinese music?!?!" Really even my close friends don't understand. Nobody I know really understands Ayu. Really if I was asian they wouldn't mind, they just think it's odd for a white person to listen to asian music.

in my little town, i am the only ayu fan at my school >_< really!!! but stared to spread the word of ayu, and people says she beautiful and hot hehehe >_<
but in all i have the biggest ayu collection in my town lol ^_^ for that matter the biggest japanese cd collection HAHAHAHA *EVIL LAUGH* o(>▽<)o

Many of my classmates aren't really focused on Ayu or her singing, just "Do you know what she's saying? How do you understand her?"
...It gets pretty annoying

I don't really talk about it much at school, it doesn't come up.
People who've driven with me know though, and they're pretty cool with it =D..I listen to my iPod in my car always, so if she comes up on shuffle and I feel like listening to her song, I do =D!

nobody really cares about any Japanese music.
For the people that do listen to at least some Japanese music: the songs are Jpn versions of Korean songs, the songs are from anime/drama, or it's J-Rock
