Nightwish: does anyone here know them?

Nightwish is my favorite band... they're from Finland and composed of a female lead singer (Tarja) and 4 other members of the band (guitarist, bass guitarist, drummer, keyboardist). Their music is metal and Tarja sings with operatic vocals. My favorite songs are "Sleeping Sun" and "Dead Boy's Poem"... Just curious if anyone here knows/likes them ^.^*

Nightwish is one of my favorite bands (second only to Dream Theater). I have every album they've put out. 'Oceanborn' is probably my favorite. With 'Century Child' and 'Wishmaster' not far behind. Do you have the 'From Wishes to Eternity' DVD? If not, you should definitley check it out. It's amazing.

ahahaha actually I own Angels Fall First and Oceanborn.. I borrowed Century Child from my boyfriend and I haven't heard all the songs of Wishmaster. I don't own From Wishes to Eternity DVD either ;.; boy am I a lousy fan.. I don't even buy everything they put out

Oceanborn is my favorite album so far. I don't like the change of music/singing style in Century Child =/

I thought the change in Tarja's style was cool on 'Century Child'. Especially on songs like ''Bless the Child'' and ''Slaying the Dreamer''. But I know a lot of fans were put off by that album. But it's always cool for a band to try new things. For some it works for others it doesn't. I am pretty fanatical about Nightwish though. The only thing I don't own is the box set and a few singles. I can't wait for their new DVD to come out next month. They are also going back in the studio soon, so that means a new album next year.

Oh yeah, check out this story. This just shows that Nightwish is band made up of cool people as well as talented musicians.

Well, I do KNOW Nightwish, but I'm not really a fan. I'm not into this prog/goth metal stuff. I prefer the more brutal metal; Dying Fetus, Deicide and that kind of stuff.

Hehe, anyone likes death metal?

You bet I do. Kataklysm, Carcass, In Flames, Hate Eternal, Death, Opeth, Lamb of God, Morbid Angel, Nile, Arch Enemy, Cannibal Corpse, etc. Death metal has some of the most technical guitar playing and and drumming outside of prog/prog-metal. But most people can't get into it because of the vocal style and the odd time signatures. But I still like prog-metal over it though. For me nothing beats Dream Theater, Nightwish, and Spock's Beard.

For those that like Nightwish you should also check out Lacuna Coil, The Gathering, Tristania, The Sins of Thy Beloved, Sinergy, Sirenia, and Therion's 'Secret of the Runes' album. All good heavy/hard music with strong female vocals.

Eeek... death metal's really scary. The vocals are like O.o;;; from what I heard it's just a bunch of growling/screaming. I like my music to have somewhat nice vocals ^.^***

Thanks for the suggestions for the other bands, though. I'll have to check them out ^.^

To understand death metal you really have to look past the vocals. I guess it's easier for us musicians. But guitarists like Jack Owen of Cannibal Corpse and drummers like Derek Roddy (Hate Eternal) are as technical musically as classical musicians. If you understand arpeggios, time signatures, scales, etc....well music theory in general you would be more likely to be able to appreciate death metal for what it is. To play that kind of music you have to have an unreal amount of dexterity and endurance. One of the first death metal songs I learned to play was the Carcass song ''Blind Bleeding the Blind". Even now when I play it after all these years, my wrists and fingers are still somewhat sore when I am done. It's not as easy to play as some would think. I assure it's more than a bunch of growling. Besides if the vocalists were crooning like Steve Perry (the guy from Journey) it would most definitely sound out of place given the frenetic speed and heaviness of the music. Besides there is more to music than vocals.

I second that recommendation. Theatre of Tragedy is awesome. Too bad their singer (I forgot her name) just left the band about a month or two ago.

Hey, another deathmetal fan! Great. Some awesome bands you named there. I love Nile, Arch Enemy and Cannibal Corpse too. I'm not such a fan of the 'Göteborg' sound of bands like In Flames though. My favorite deathmetal is mostly located on labels like Relapse. Relapse has got such awesome bands.

Many ppl seem to think that deathmetal is uninspired, not-technical and simple. Which is totally wrong, because it is terribly technical. I love it. It may be confused with grindcore, because grindcore is kinda simple and may, to a newbie, sound like death metal. And about the vocals, I love grunts. That Dying Fetus singer has an awesome grunt.

Yeah, Within Temptation rocks. But I like Nightwish and Lacuna Coil better.

O.o what's wrong with Tarja's voice? She sings with an operatic style. She's gone through years of vocal training (and she went back to school a while ago to train even more for classical singing). Maybe you just don't like the style?

I LOVE Nightwish! I was used to listen a lot to them about a year and a half back, I just love their music. Also with the new singer (Annette, right?), but it's like.. not Nightwish anymore

Nightwish is one of my favorite bands . I love Tarja Turunen and I'm sad she left the band (her solo stuff isn't that bad though). My favorites are Nemo and Passion and the Opera.

I'm not too fond of Anette (her voice sounds too happy to me after years of Tarja xD). But I absolutely love the song Amaranth with her <3. One of my favorite songs of all time.
