something that isn't confirmed and that doesn't make sense. A good jornalist (well at least what I would expect being it BBC) would do a little research or ask someone who understands of the matter and have it properly corrected before publishing that. t could be speculation, but the speculation should still make sense.

That's like they saying:

"Oh evidences is that ayu probably has a headache because her toenail hurts." Maybe for the average reader that don't understand about headaches and toenail pain will think that's normal. For someone who understands will read that and find it absurd.

^ Possibly a rumor-mag? I always hate it when news sources (some US ones do it, too) include the tidbits of information they hear from tabloids or blogs. They don't pass it off as true, mind, but mentioning it at all is still a bad idea...

It's a disease. Symptoms can't have their own symptoms. (Basically, the symptom for tinnitus is the mild / constant ringing in your ears.) Plus, symptoms don't have their national organizations.

I mean, true, tinnitus DOES show that you're starting to lose your hearing, but in the end, it's a disease.

I'm a physician and tinnitus IS a symoptom not a disease. The meaning of tinnitus is "a ringing in the ears". Tinnitus isn't necessarily related with hearing loss. It's a symptom caused wen you have a problem in the inner ear, and can be caused by SEVERAL diseases. You can go deaf without having tinnitus or you could go deaf having tinnitus, or you can have tinnitus and not go deaf. It's plainly a symptom and not a disease.

You are just describing what the symptom "tinnitus" is.

Tinnitus is not a disease in itself, but a symptom that something is wrong in the auditory system. While theories exist, the actual mechanism responsible for tinnitus remains unknown, as does the origin of the ear noises. But tinnitus is not just in the patient's imagination. It is a physiological or neurological event that has not yet been identified.

Sorry. ^__^; I've researched this a few times, and I've seen different descriptions for it. (I've heard it being called a symptom, a disease, and a disorder.) I just don't see why a SYMPTOM would have a national organization, like I said. (Which there is one, not lying, it's right here.)

I'm sure this will be big in HK and stuff xO!

What?! It appeared on "the Australia", must search for a copy now if it did make it physically to the paper...

"It makes me cry to think that even if she's the only one who knows that she can't hear with her left ear, she has continued to sing and showed us her smiling face. That's what I love about Ayumi Hamasaki,'' wrote a fan on a webpage." - The Australian

I've heard of Tinnitus being a disease and a symptom, depending on what you read. I think of it more like a symptom caused by something in your ear. Like.. I have very bad ringing in both of my ears, but the ringing in my left ear is always there, and my ear has drainage. ..so I consider my Tinnitus being caused by some trauma, or infection.

a symptom is generic. Is what the patient feels. The patient feels tinnitus but won't feel "acoustic trauma". There's an organization for it because people with differents diseases that causes the symptom tinnitus can be part of it, specially because tinnitus can cause severe disability. It's kinda like making an organization for blind people. Not all blind people had simmilar diseases in their eyes when they went blind. being blind (amaurosis) is a symptom and not a disease, just like ayu going deaf in her left ear. Being deaf is a symptom, not a disease (there was a disease that caused her to go deaf, be either acoustic trauma or something else).

nice that they are writing about her, but I don't really like that they took this topic, well yeah its big, since not many artists go deaf of one ear and still continue, some might quit

I also have the feeling this won't have much impact on people worldwide though. They will just see it and think "oh somebbody I don't even know went deaf. Who cares...."

is she deaf or does she have tinitus...
these are two different things..

and a tinitus can be cured a little over years ^^
She is deaf on one ear... and she had Tinitus befor.
This are not really two different things.
I also have Tinitus since years. I have it on both ears.. but much worse on the right one.
When I went to the doctor, years ago, he also told me, I should take care of loud noise. If there is to much loud noise, I can become deaf. Thats why I'm always putting something into my ear, when I'm going to a disco or something like that.
So...if you have Tinitus.. and you will hear loud noise every day, you can become deaf! Thats it. So.. in the beginning, she also had Tinitus, which becomes more and more worse, I think.
And no.. Tinitus can't really cured. Would be nice, if it can be cured really.
If you have it since a short time, there is a chance.. but not, if you have it since years.

I've had temporary tinnitus once, mainly because of something really loud exploding by my side. after a few weeks, the tinnitus went away and never came back. It can be a temporary symptom and completely disappear. It all depends on what caused it. I'm not losing my hearing because of that isolated episode either. It's kinda like pain, you can have a pain that goes away after a few days (if you suffered a cut) or have an untreatable pain that never goes away (if you have an advanced cancer or something)
