Question [2003] Ayumi's biggest competitor...

i would say its BoA. I mean, shes young so she still has time to make her as popular as ayumi is now, and we don't know how long ayumi's career will last. BuT ayumi is so much more talented than BoA....BoA can dance...but she cant sing...no offence. Utada's not much of a competition, but her new albums got her fans waiting for a LONG time so i think it'll do very well, althought it will be released in america.

this is an ayumi forum
of course we love ayumi more

if boa writes her own song
shes pretty talented
and utada is pretty good too
she was the first jpop artist i listened too
she started to write her own songs when she was really young

ayumi is the best of course!

umm...no way is BoA Ayu's competitor, Hikki by far is her major competitor o_o" just look at the sales....unless BoA starts writing something meaningful and have more variety in her styles of music~

but then ayu and BoA's sales are close, and hikki hasn't released anything since 'colors'. Ionno about namie, but for some reason her songs dont appeal to me. And ur right about the whole BoA writing something meaningful....ayus so much more mature than BoA and ayu can actually express herself thru her songs

Sorrry guys but Namie is not even close to being Ayumi's competitor. I think she's lucky to have someone like Hikki as a competitor (since theyre not in direct competition for the media spotlight etc etc).

If Ayumi acts now and gets into the English market then there is no stopping her.

I don't think that's a good idea.. her english is very bad, hardly understandable... I love ayu, she's my favorite singer... but w she would not make it here... competition is too tough... and American singers are changing constantly... I think Hikki is better off here than Ayu... I personally believe ayu would get dropped @___@

harsh but true. I think she sould dance more,....da dance in Real Me was cool. And her english....its alright since shes only had a few songs w/ english in it. Look at mai kuraki. All her songs have had english in them, and ashes been singing for years, AND HER ENGLISH STILL SUKS!!!!if ayumi tried, i think she can do it. and ive never seen her act so....

I don't know if Ayu should dance more.. I mean she is switching genres a lot.. from rock to pop to trance to rock to pop and what not.. Mai Kuraki's English does suck, though.. I'm suprised that Tetsuya Komuro's English had scarcely improved after writing all those Namie Amuro songs..

Yes I agree that Ayu should dance more. Real Me was good...but she needs some more hardcore dancing....like Britney's "Sadisfaction/Oops I did it again" 2000 VMA preformance. That blew me away and she needs to dance like that.

i think ayu should stay to her own style...ie watever she likes doing...if she doesn't like to dance...datz ok to me...if she doesn't wanna go into the english market..datz good with me too

but if she wanna do both of these...i'll be one of the first to support her!!!

as for whoz her biggest competitor..i'd say...hikki and BoA....Hikki in term of the whole jpop industry..BoA in terms of whose in the same record company as she does..as u know that record companies do have to allocate their resources and make a choice between which artist to put more $$ into developing..

as for namie..i agree that she just isn't as big now as she used to be

She's improved greatly with her dancing (since barely moving in earlier concerts/tours) but I believe she will never become a 'full-blown' dancer. Probably nothing more complicated than "Real me". I love her dancing, but you can tell that she isn't a 'professional' dancer, and I doubt she would like to be either. But who knows?

i think Hikki takes the english in this department IMO. but kuraki mai's albums (some) are released in america as Mai-K. plus i wouldn't say BoA is a direct competitor to AYU, i'd say Hikki is. but AYU will still always be my fav cheers!

Well, seeing as to how the US has a pretty big appreciation for Latin music, I think Ayu could perhaps herald the introduction of J-pop in the mainstream market...or at least give it a bigger spot in American pop culture. I mean, she obviously has a hot sound. I dunno, just a thought.

I'd say Hikki and no other. Didn't Hikki get voted as the 'most talented female artist' in some magazine award earlier this year? Which is pretty much true since she writes her own music and lyrics. Her enormous sales also reflects her popularity.

But still, Hikki can never beat Ayu in the 'emotion' department and the maturity and insightfulness of Ayu's lyrics. Some of Hikki's lyrics are IMO just there because a song needs lyrics...

BoA's sales is far from Ayu's though actually, Ayu's dancing isn't that great, its not her thing, I wouldn't like her to become a typical pop-star...I mean her PVs now are much more interesting than a typical BoA style dancing PV

BoA's still weak to compete with ayu right now, I saw a figure somewhere before while ayu takes around 1/3 of avex's total profits BoA only has like 8%, plus BoA's voice annoys me quite a bit... (no offence to BoA fans)
I would also say Hikki since she's "Artist of the Year" in this year's Gold Disc Award, she was the winner back in '00 and then ayu took the trophy in '01 & '02. And her sales are pretty amazing, "Automatic", "Movin' on without you", "Addicted To You", and "Wait & See" are in Japan's 50 best selling singles in history while ayu only has "A" single in it.
