[2006] Does Ayumi time her releases with the products she endorses?
Since her songs are used for the commercials, does she have to wait until another product is released to release a new single?

I think the situation is rather that she produces singles to meet contractual obligations for product themes. For example Panasonic may stipulate that in a certain year Ayu/avex must deliver a certain number of CM songs.
Companies know in advance what their marketing schedules are, so the songwriting/recording/etc is most likely arranged to meet the sponsor's deadlines. I don't think it is the case that she has songs sitting around waiting for endorsement opportunities. |

^ Does that mean if she made a particularly horrid one, she HAS to use it for the CM anyway?

yeah, in the end, I think it's more like a quota instead of timing. For all we know, the FX9 was already made, shipped in Japan, and only got that CM when "Will" came out. So I think as long as there is the meeting of the quota, Panasonic will be happy. or any regular endorser for that matter. But like one time endorsers (e.g. Camellia Diamonds) ask for permission after it's released.

but wait, she makes the songs knowing already what they're gonna be used for? or does she make them and then decides she wants that one for a particular endorsement deal she made?

I am not sure but I do believe that the endorsing company does listen to the song before deciding to use it. Also it's possible that Ayu does know that a certain song which she's making is going to be used.

Not like it matters though... "Will" and "alterna" aren't exactly about cameras.
Judging from the fact that the songs often sound unfinished when used in the CM, i think they have to get at least a thrown-together version of the song sent to the company by a certain deadline, and I do think the songs are usually done at their own pace regardless of when they're needed. Ayu & her A&R people probably do know that they need a song for a campaign on a certain date, but the songs probably get written & produced when they're written & produced. It happens as it happens.

Avex has that "avex tie-up coordination" department to manage its singers' tie-ups. If ayu releases a single at a time when none of her endorsing products has new CMs, the single could go with a TV-drama/TV-program/movie tie-up.

^ I don't really think so, Ayu really doesn't need any tie-in's with huge dramas or movies to get good sales. You'll see one-time hits in singles which is pretty much 90% due to the popularity of the drama.
Ayu does't need her tie-ins to boost her short-term sales, I think she does them to get her image around and solidly too. A tv-drama tie-in doesn't really do this, which is probably why she doesn't do them very much. |

I've been wondering about the whole CM process.
I guess a commercial tie-in for a product or company pays better , since they pay her to use her 'likeness' in TV and print ads and whatnot ? does the production company pay an artist to use their songs as themes for animes and dramas , or is the publicity & sales boost all the artists get ? I doubt they'll pay that much at least ... |

Regardless whether they have a significant boost to her sales or not I have to argue that TV drama tie-ups are actually one of the strongest. The song will be heard for a longer period than a CM (In rotation a few weeks, usually) in the case of Voyage for My Little Chef it was was on air for 3 months with Voyage coming out 2 weeks after it ended. A song then becomes somewhat iconic and if the drama is popular becomes part of the popularity and so when the single comes out a lot of people want a copy.
And she's had her fair share of TV drama/movie themes, actually. |
