[Discussion] Signature Song(s)

I'm sure this is discussed (or was discussed) in the official artists' threads at one point in time. Now it's a great time (with all these new up and coming artists) to point out which songs YOU feel are their signature songs. Also, out of curiosity, what do you consider the epitome of Japanese music? (If possible, place links to stream the music/video). Basically, what I'm asking is:

Which song, in your opinion, DEFINES an artist? Why?

and

Which song, in your opinion, DEFINES (current) Japanese music? Why? *This is really an open-ended question. If you feel versed in music, you may want to tackle decades or eras.*

So for me (I'll just do one as an example, and may be reply later):

Amuro Namie - CAN YOU CELEBRATE?

This, I believe, was released within the time period of her marriage. Befitting that, this is also her highest (not to mention Japan's Female highest) selling single. Released just before her hiatus, and sung on Kouhaku following, I truly feel that this is her signature song. It defines the softer side of Amuro, yet showcases the awesome vocals she possesses. It's just the tip of her iceberg.

and as for Japan...

Hibari Misora - Kawa no Nagare no you ni

I seriously consider this the second national anthem. Hibari Misora's, probably the most famous artist in Japan, most famous song, it really defines Japan in a way most other songs can't. The instrumentals and voice makes the song really relaxing, and is the epitome of all Japanese music.

-----------------
What do you think?

Chihiro Onitsuka-Gekkou
For her, this song imo established her as an artist just by being her second single after her debut. I've seen this song as one of her trademark songs, following this song would be Ryuuseigun and Infection. Her vocal range is beautiful and this song mae her a must listen female artist.

Ken Hirai - LAKuEN

this was the song which established Ken Hirai's new R&B style & it was his top 10 single . LAKuEN was his 8th single & from his 2nd - 7th singles , they never charted on the Oricon chart so LAKuEN was kinda like a comeback for him .

http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance...enrakuen_music

but to me personally this's the song that got me introduced to him which was his 20th single Hitomi wo Tojite (Close Your Eyes) which was the top selling single of '04 which's kinda strange cos its peak position was no.2 == http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance...o-tojite_music

That was the very 1st song I heard from him after my middle sister played for me which got me interested in him cos I was looking for some er fresh blood to listen to .

& I love what I hear & that happened 1 1/2 months ago & the rest's history .

But his most recent works , I have to say Elegy's amazing , it's probably on par with Hitomi wo Tojite , even a bit up there than Hitomi wo Tojite .

Elegy - http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance...ai-elegy_music

the PV is quite artistic & there're quite many kinda topless shots of Ken in the PV but alas I only can see his upper body from the shoulders on . Well I will just imagine how the rest of his body looks like then haha

do ken hirai got muscle?

well i want to write bout hitomi:
by myself
oneday i chose it and listen to its PV
it seems so depressed
a song for those who are depressed and unfaithful
and all you can to do is just "by myself"
like everyone in this world is dying and left you alone
it hurts sometimes to me...

WE ARE LONELY GIRL
another depressing song
the melody is so lonely...
sometimes it makes my eyes wet...

well it sounds i'm a depressed student
well sometimes when i feel lonely, yes
but not everytime...
i might crazy too

Ai Otsuka - Planetarium

This song... it would say it's Ai-Chin's signature song AND a song that could represent Japanese music in general since it has this feeling of sakura flowers dropping from the sky or something lol.

Koda Kumi - JUICY/Ima sugu hoshii/BUT/any urban songs from her

As perverted as any of them may sound, it's undeniable that Kuu is probably one of the first few Japanese female singers to touch on the urban genre (I think...), so in a way, this is a breakthrough to Japanese music.

And I agree with karen on Ken's songs... Elegy is a very very good song!

And could the threadstarter please state if we can use Ayu as well, cos I think she deserves to be mentioned in this thread too.

A Song for XX - Ayumi Hamasaki
This song is Ayu's ultimate signature song. It shows everything about Ayu. Her tragic past, her trying to break away from that, her amazing music style, her great abilities to touch people with her music, her gift to write such beautiful lyrics, her famous squeaky voice... EVERYTHING. It's my favorite song.

Koda kumi is certainly not the first japanese femal artist to do urban music. Double has been around for ten years now among other artists.

Koda Kumi - real Emotion

This song is the first one that really pops in my head when I hear other people talk about Koda Kumi. It was the song that truly jettisoned her into the spotlight, and is (to me) her breakout song. However, I did have a hard time deciding between that and Butterfly, since she won the Japan Record Award for it.

Otsuka Ai - Planetarium (+Sakuranbo in video)

Otsuka Ai is another really hard artist to define... Her biggest hit Sakuranbo didn't cut it out for me, though. Planetarium just has much more to it than itself, since it was tied in with the biggest show in 2005 (Hana Yori Dango). Also, this song is probably her best composition I've heard from her yet, from start to finish. Although the fact that it's tied in with my favorite drama, the overall composition and lyrics gives it more of an edge.

Hamasaki Ayumi - RAINBOW (fanvid)

I swear, I choose the hardest artists to define. In my opinion, RAINBOW holds the best of Ayumi. Turning to her fans for help with the lyrics, and any comments of the composition so far (when released on RAINBOW), she really brought it with this song. Although it wasn't featured on a re-cut single (which would have been much smarter than A BALLADS, even if we wouldn't have gotten the remixes), this song is something really special and worth buying A BALLADS for. Even in the A BALLADS book, she mentions her fans for helping her. Her best composition, in my opinion.

Morning Musume - LOVE MACHINE

Of course. Their highest selling single, and probably their most reknown song they've ever released. No concert is complete without LOVE MACHINE, in my opinion. Performed as much on Kouhaku as Nada Sou Sou by Natsukawa Rimi or Yuki Shin Shin by Fuji Ayako, this song just never gets old to me. Although Momusu (as called by fans) should have performed another original song this past Kouhaku, it's something that everyone in Japan can relate to. Released when Japan was experiencing an economic decline, this song was perfect for the time, and will always be perfect for Japan.

hmm~ I'd say ..

DOUBLE - Shake
As a duo, I think that this single was their hit single?, very catchy and fun, and it has the soulful feel to it, like other older RnB songs. Unlike teh current Hip-Pop you hear these days. Sad that Sachiko here no longer, she was an awesome artist. TAKAKO, as a soloist, has done the right thing continuing music herself, SACHIKO would be very proud.

this's probably the best single/song that otsuka has released so far in her career . it will definitely go down the road as a classic song .

I got a bad impression of her initally but after I heard Planetarium , my perception on her changed a lot since then . She either can do those really crazy over the top songs or serious ones . I prefer her serious material but if I have those days , then crazy over the top ones for me haha

I listen to a bit of KinKi Kids here & there . They're crazy , all 26 of their singles all have hit no.1 which's insane .

but below are those that I really really like :

Harmony Of December - http://youtube.com/watch?v=CcgbkYlJ6FY

this was their 24th single & was the very 1st song I heard from them & not to mention saw a bit of the PV on MTV . I wasn't into Jpop back then when I saw/heard it but when I heard this again , I knew it's the 1 !

to me this's 1 of their strongest tracks & it definitely deserved to debut at no.1 . Some of their singles don't really deserve the no.1 spot & frankly some are also quite cheesy .

Anniversary - http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance...ds-anniversary

this was their 20th single . I'm sure I've heard this song somewhere before that cos it sounded very familiar when I got the chance to hear the full version . This song's <3

& most recently V6's way of life . I'm not really familiar with their stuff aside from CHANGE THE WORLD but my younger sister let me hear way of life & it's a great ballad .

I 1st heard the song when they performed live during a show right after Ken Hirai performed .

way of life - http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance...ife_shortfilms

I never watched the PV but my sister said it's very boring but the song's beautiful !

To me, the dancing is mediocre, so it's not my favorite PV. But to be honest, I like the song. I thought it was amazing at first, then they release more, then it becomes like their bar. Ahaha.

Anyway, I think Hurricane Lily, Boston Mary is their best. I just feel their energy, and it's awesome..

Though based on favorites, Wonderful Life is my favorite...
