I agree with Kaori that soba ni iru ne is pretty bland. And it doesn't at all sound like a song that would sell so well.

But on the other hand, I think a lot of singles better than DUES have been released this year. I guess DUES isn't really bad or anything, I just like listening to LIPS more than it. But LOVEJUICE was like

I don't actually like Soba ni Iru or DUES but Thelma's song is really boring IMO. I really don't get all the hype about her.
Of the top three, Arashi has the best song but I guess it isn't close enough to be in the running for the top spot.
Hopefully someone will bring an AMAZING single that will destroy everyone...I'm still praying that Hana Yori Dango works magic for aiko like it did Hikki and KissHug gets great sales!

Hana Yori Dango better work magic for Arashi. I love aiko and all, but One Love needs to live up to Step and Go, what with the giant tie-in and all. Arashi's single better crush all those out there!!!!!!!!!!

^Aiko....is singing for HYDF??? DDDDD: *is so shocked...seriously* GO AIKO! I hope this tie-in does work wonders for her. She has really impressed me. I don't mind if she gets the #1 single of the year. It's been a long time coming anyway.

As for Soba, I think the lyrics is what attracted fans to the song. =/ I thought that were okay...nothing out of the ordinary. It's been overplayed and overrated now....but I don't mind the success that it has now.

I haven't heard DUES so I can't judge nothing about this single or KAT-TUN. =/

95% of Thelma's discography is better than Soba ni Iru ne. Although I do quite like that song too. Her album DIARY is great even though it takes a while to sink in. <3

I'm not really bothered as to which song gets the best seller because they've already sold amazingly so in a sense they've really already won. If that even makes sense - to me it does right now.

I'm so depressed at Crystal Kay's position, and slightly angry at Kumi's.

Edit And Luv, it doesn't matter if aiko gets the #1 of the year or not, she needs this #1 no matter how it sells. In her 10 year career, she's been in the top 5 for 8 years and not a single #1.

But isn't One Love released the same day as Lovehug? For once, I hope ARASHI won't get the #1, in this case.

I will be so disappointed if "Soba ni Iru ne" gets the top spot. Thelma sounds like she's half asleep the whole time and the entire song makes me wanna take a nap. Doesn't help that she looks like a busted Raven Symone.

I really hope aiko can get the #1 single of the year, although I doubt it. Maybe, though. That would be awesome, I love her.

That's exactly what I was thinking, only meaner. Seriously. And I would hate if she got popular to the point where I had to look at her face all the time. Not that she's ugly, but her face bothers me.

Nope. It's released almost a month after aiko's single.
I know that Arashi is pretty much guaranteed a top spot, but I want this single to do amazingly well since the tie-in is so huge. Hopefully it can be a long charter like Love so sweet.

Wow I'm a little suprised by all the negative remarks about her. soba ni iru ne is not the best song of the year by far, it's barely an above average song, but I think it's deserving compared to some other songs that got #1. Not a fan of KAT-TUN at all so definitely cheering her on plus I <3 Diary.

I don't like Aiko. She sounds too....kiddish? for my tastes. Plus she looks like my math teacher that I can't stand I've only listened to Himitsu album from her. After one listen through it I deleted it. Maybe I'll try something else from her in the future.

Why does everyone seem to hate Thelma? You can't judge her by one of currently fourteen songs listed to her name. Songs like My dear friend and ONE WAY really let her vocals shine and if you want a proper, inspired ballad with good vocals by her just listen to the song DIARY. And Thelma is far from ugly. You're almost as bad as the people who judge Stephanie by her looks before her amazing music.

concerning the HYD songs, i don't think both singles will sell as high as you expect them to. a j-movie tie-in is very different from a j-drama tie-in. a single can benefit more from a j-drama tie-in because the show is shown weekly and it gets a nice boost after each show.

...but then again, it is HYD. i still think they'll sell moderately well. i don't think Arashi or aiko will get the top yearly spot, but that's just me talking. XD

i'm personally rooting for "DUES" to get that top spot. i liked "Soba ni Iru ne" for a while, but i don't think it's that great to get the yearly #1 spot. but, Mr. Children has some singles coming out too. i think they have the potential to knock either KAT-TUN or Aoyama Thelma from the top spot.

I've listened to Thelma's album and I'm sorry but if you haven't listened to it, trust me, you're not missing ANYTHING.
I haven't heard aiko's song but if it's something like the material off Himitsu then I smell a winner!
Hopefully KissHug will be the next Flavor Of Life!

It's not that I hate Thelma, or think she's fug. I just don't think Soba ni iru ne isn't that great of a song. I preferred Soulja's version WAY more.
But I think DUES is a complete better, not just because I love KAT-TUN, but because it is. If I was cheering on my fave band, I'd be rooting for Arashi for number one, but I'm not. ONE WAY was a much better song from Thelma, I agree about that, but that didn't do as well. =[

Well, this IS the Oricon thread, and we're discussing the top singles of the year. "Soba ni Iru ne" doesn't deserve the #1 spot, IMO, and I think that it's really overrated. I was only talking about that song, not her other stuff, because I haven't listened to it (mostly due to the fact that SNIN has turned me off from her), so it could be great, I don't know.

Yeah agreed. I myself am not into Stephanie's looks at all, but wow I heard her album and it's one of my top 3 favorite albums of 08. She has a really beautiful voice. Sad it didn't do that well on the charts. I think her looks may have played a part in that too, but you can only guess.

I didn't like much of her music until I heard "Friends" which I enjoyed quite a bit. Her album was pretty good. It would be sad if her looks played into her album flopping. I didn't think she was ugly or anything, but I mean even her record company covered her face in most her first video. That's kind of embarrassing.
