Why Doesn't Ayumi Compose That Often?

CREA is an actually really good composer. Why doesn't she compose more? Is she not confident enough in her own compositions?
I can't get my head around it. Songs like Heartplace and M were amazing.

What do you think?

Well, it seems like she started composing because she felt a little frustrated that the songs didn't quite fit with her vision when others did them - I think something about M in its early stages didn't sync up with how she saw it? Or was that evolution...

Either way, she must be happy with the compositions others give her and how they 'fit', so she probably doesn't feel compelled to try her hand at it anymore. Though she did compose a few songs on MY STORY. Granted that was 3 albums ago, but still lol.

Since Ayu didn't go to any sort of musical school and has admitted that she lacks that knowledge I think it's a little harder for her to do it than some of us might think. I do hope she goes back to it, even if it's just a song or two. I'd love to hear whatever she can come up with for her next record

I think she wants to change her style a bit, to try and get out of using CREA so much. I'm hoping she'll use CREA once again..

agreed. I think Ayu (or maybe Avex) wanted to try diff styles. look at (m)U for the obvious. but then, many of us miss the CREA creations. definitely look forward to her composes again.

I'm pretty sure she's probably happy with what people give her for her albums nowadays.

According to masa:
Quote:
  (S) Could you tell me how it started to the release of the song, "M"?
  (A) When we make a single, usually the producer listens to the melodies first. How many was it? Maybe about fifty. He selects twenty or thirty among them and passes them to Ayu. And Ayu selects one, changes some parts and decide the composition. But in this case, any melodies didn't appeal to me. I realized in some part of my mind that it was not the fault of the melodies but I should do it, I should write the melody for myself. And I bought a keyboard suddenly. But I couldn't use it well at all at first. I use Pigeon, but couldn't use it at all and recorded my voice to the tape-recorder alone as "La la la ..."
She probably doesn't feel the need to do it anymore, or she just doesn't feel like it right now. I think if she truly felt like she needed to though, she would.

I don't mind not seeing CREA anymore. I think her compositional inspiration dried up by the time MY STORY came around. A lot of people who first start composing come out with some really fantastic pieces, and then suddenly they write garbage (a la "winding road"). This is because a person has a lifetime of creative ideas which have been pent up and frustrated until being released when the person decides to start writing melodies, and they take form as something really special and unique. However, once these ideas are all used up, and the new composer must rely completely on musical skill, they are unable to fashion any particularly good pieces.

Ayu needs to practice before releasing anything else as CREA.

Personally, I don't see what was so wrong with winding road. :\

I guess the fans here and in Japan both hated it though. It was like, bottom three of songs preferred by TeamAyu. Perhaps that damaged her confidence in composing?

2. About You (14,009)
3. HONEY (10,933)
4. my name's WOMEN (10,608)
5. Moments (9,845)
6. Replace (9,093)
7. Humming 7/4 (9,036)
8. CAROLS (8,715)
9. GAME (7,004)
10. INSPIRE (6,270)
11. HAPPY ENDING (5,846)
12. HOPE or PAIN (5,458)
13. winding road (4,973)
14. Liar (3,832)
15. Catcher In the Light (1,539)
16. WONDERLAND (1,494)
17. Kaleidoscope (615)
Humming, I understand, but wtf. The bottom 3 actual songs were also excluded from the party that was AT05 too. ;_;

^agreed.

why doesn't she compose?

musician's version of writer's block? lol

It's not like she really has any musical ability...I mean in the form of instruments, theory, and composition. Don't jump all over me, it's a fact.

The bottom 3 ACTUAL songs were not included at all in AT05. :[ I wonder why TeamAyu disliked Liar so much.

Wasn't CREA the name of one of her dogs? Maybe it died so she doesn't want to use that name anymore

winding road is saved by its good arrangement, but as a composition alone it is very, very amateurish. The melody and chord progressions reek of "trying too hard". In other words, they are musically cliché. I suppose she wanted it to match the cliché lyrics.

Humming 7/4 is at least a little more interesting. It actually has a very nice musical contour. For me what makes it sub-par (the par being CREA's previous compositions) is the cheerleader-esque quality of the chorus melody. But that being said, it's a lot more difficult to convincingly compose an upbeat tune than it is to compose a darker or aggressive one. And most of CREA's previous compositions were dark and/or aggressive.

I think Tru simply means "full songs", of average length, with substantial vocals, and likely to be performed actively rather than passively as scene-change music. Interludes are of course entirely valid pieces of music.

Which leads me to think that Ayu only composes when she seriously has something to "compose" or write about.

Piccolo has been a member here since 2002, I think he understood what anthony meant. lol

"Write" in the musical sense.

She seems to be happy with her composers.

I'm sure CREA will come back, there is no reason why she wouldn't write another song or two before her career is over.

By the way, how are you able to tell what Ayumi is feeling? That's a bold statement with little to no proof there.

I know not everyone likes tunes that were composed by CREA such as Humming 7/4 but it's 1 perfect song to get high on (in a good way)
