If you own the Duty album, the note is printed on the booklet under lyric of "Duty". ^_^
Sample from "Nos Autem Gloriari Kyrie" performed by Schola Antiqua. Taken from the album "Gregorian Chant - Music For Holy Week in Proportional Rhythm" and licensed courtesy of Decca Music Group.

Weird though, I never firgured out where the sample is when listening to my CD... @_@

It's at the beginning of the track - you can hear voices singing before Ayu starts - those are the chants. As far as I know about the Gregorian Chant album, there's only singing on it, no music.

Its Gregorian chant, an ancient choir style of music from the Roman Catholic church, it is being used less and less since Vatican II. It is all male from what I've heard and not to suprsiningly is in latin. I believe it was Pope Gregory or something that created it and was the creator of modern music writing. Its quite good music if you ever listen to it and it has survived the test of time.

While Duty was a great album, I found it insulting for her to use it. Gregorian chant is something sacred and should not have been used for a non-religous purpose. Especially when it is distorted and has no connection to the lyrics of Duty.

AyuDearest1 knows alot!!!
Are you religious? just curious...since you know about the Gregorian chant
well...maybe it's true that it may be insulting to use it on a Jpop song...
but I think it fits the mood of the song^^
perhaps there's a deeper meaning! you might want to do research analysis on it^+++^

While this may be the case and granted, using such music in a pop album may seem a little out of the ordinary, I think that calling it insulting is a little much. After all, one can't suppose or infer the reason ayu put the sample into her track. Also, as you yourself stated, "It's quite good music if you ever listen to it." It is altogether possible that she used it for aesthetic purposes. Also, if it's true that Pope Gregory was the creator of modern music, it's all the more reason that such famous music would fit into such a moody piece as duty.

I think that the lyrics of Duty are on a very grand scale. They may be referring to many, many different things. She talks about an unidentified thing called "it," which could refer to a myrad of vital components in life--even ones called "sacred" or "holy" in our language. She talks about her turn being next when discussing the end of an age. In this light, there can be a case made for relevance.

But more likely, it was a stylistic use. In order for ayu's choice to be an inappropriate one, we have to agree with the assumption that she was using this sample (btw, a sample is only about 10 seconds or less) knowingly and recklessly in her music. This inattention to detail would not fly on a major record--especially considering the fact that the sample was cited, so it was obviously used for a very specific purpose, be it aesthetic or related to the song itself.

I'm not into religious stuff... and I find it strange to call using these chants "insulting".... I don't believe in sacred stuff. For me Ayu is sacred and has the right to do anything she wants! (something about Nietzche's philosophy maybe?)
