I think that right now, Utada is the best musician in Japan. I say that because, yes her voice is just awesome, and because of the level of her involvement in her music.
The problem is, is that some people don't want just musicians...they want stars, like ayu and kuu etc etc. Even though, I think that technically Hikki is probably much better than them at making music, I wonder what would have happened had she not gone the R&B route...for example...what if she had made music like ayu, I mean Ayu sometimes has just this really unique sound...I think that maybe that was a factor in how well people liked ayu and hikki, and maybe even how much they like them now...

i think that no matter what, i'm gonna stick with ayu b/c music originally is about expression and emotion. ayu is true to that and no one pulls it off better than her. when she sings, i'm touched everytime. its not the just the voice and the dancing and the looks. its the message that matters.

I'd say she's the only successful singer that solely rely on her musical talent. No sexiness, no trendy outfits, no fashionable etcetras. Purely music. <3

Yeah that's true but Utada also was lucky since her family had musical connections and made sure she made the right choices and was in control of her music. Personally I feel that while artists like Ayumi and Kumi struggled to get the spotlight Utada had it much easier because her parents knew the right people and were rich.

Dude, Hikki had connections and there was this whole marketing scheme behind the way she debuted.
Plus, she's the daughter of one of the most popular enka singers of the 60's / 70's.. :|

She's had to pick herself back up from faliures as well. From Cubic U to Hikki, she's had to work to get where she is as well. Ayu didn't really have it any harder than anyone else did in getting to the top. The fact that she has popularity without the glam and diva-ness of Ayu or the sexy, earthiness of Koda Kumi or constant publicity is something I admire from her a lot.

I think a lot of her popularity stems from the fact that she was the first real J-RnB artist to debut in Japan at the time, and that she was what, 15-16? D:

utada is just as glam as she is many of her music videos and photos. she became successful and won many fans for that as well.
i know i'm unfair and i will be unfair in saying i don't admire her b/c she was indeed spoonfed. it was all there for her and w/e struggles there were, it was only due to the nature of the music industry which is what every one else in it goes through. she made her mark and became successful the first moment she came out in Japan(Precious then Automatic/Time Will Tell). only two releases in Japan already! she had it all there for her to take advantage of. but although i say these things, it does not mean i hate her. i am a big fan of hers. utada and ayu were introduced to me at the same time and i listened and loved them both as much up to now. it's unfair, but it's only natural to admire those who come from nothing to something more. i guess there something moral or ethical behind it. it's how i perceive the world. I think and always have thought that hikki has a very strong voice but the only thing that bugs me is her vibrato! It sounds very emphasized and fake, but that's okay because I still love her. Hikki's voice seemed very worn out in her United 2006 concert.
I don't agree that Hikki will easily lose her spot to Ayaka, Asuca hayashi and mink like what ImpactBreaker mentioned. For example for Ayaka, I don't think 2007 is going to be as good of a year for her as the previous year. Ayaka was really strong in her debut year last year and all of the sudden this year, she's not really giving any new material to her fans. Her collab with Kobukuro was quite disappointing IMO and she isn't releasing a new single until some time in the middle of this year. That's a big break compare to her releases last year. Besides, none of these artists mentioned above have a similar style as Hikki. Every singer is just different, so you really can't say that Hikki will/can lose her position to them. |

It's funny...some of the first real jpop songs i heard were ayu's "kanariya" and hikki's "can you keep a secret?" i loved them both, and for a while i even liked hikki better. but i don't think her voice, at it's best point, was ever better than ayu's at her best point. during i am... ayu's voice was at it's peak. i know people like to say it's better now, but from a technical point, it really isn't. all the lives during dearest were flawless, and her voice was so clear and strong. hikki is nothing without her vibrato. and i think she uses it too much to make up for a lack of strong vocal talent. her vibrato, though, is EXTREMELY strong. so she can belt it out really well. and i'd say that ayu's voice now is not in good shape at all, but hikki's isn't all that great either. and, more importantly, i think most of what hikki has done since distance (with the exception of a few tracks) has been bland and generic. ayu has been repeating herself a lot though, so don't think i'm blindly supporting her.

hmmm, i watched that performance again. i think she has problems with those really high notes (ex: "you-u... calling you") she sounds extremely out of breath. as for yuna ito, seems she has no problem as when she sings "kawaru"... in "Precious". here's the performance:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UOBRv04CRg she has one of most beautiful voices of Japanese singers. as for stage presence, it all goes to Ayumi Hamasaki. |

I know this is old, but she had problems breathing in Utada United because she was allergic to the wood that the theatre was made out of.

Utada has the BEST voice, so it's the best singer if you count only that and not the look, the dance, the personality, the songs themselves... I love her haha
