I don't think "FYI" would be a very good choice. It's not radio-friendly enough.

I actually trekked out to CBS on Saturday to check out Utada. It was a group of about eight of us and we stood outside from like 4 a.m. (I got there at 5) to watch her. We got to see her rehearse (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsSWeFgQEEA) through the glass, and that was pretty cool. And she waved at us once.
What was even better though, is that CBS invited us inside to watch her perform FYI! And we got to take a group photo with her afterward! It was the best day ever, to be honest. She's just as pretty and nice in person, and not as tiny as I thought she'd be. It was really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Spoiler:

The Good Morning America appearance was corrected to be The Early Show apperearance. It was just a mistake as of now.
Also, I'm glad Utada keeps knocking down walls that fans put up. More Japanese Influence in her future American releases is so full of win and the fact that she acknowledge that there will be more American releases period just subdued so many of my fears. How did I feel about the addition of "Sanctuary" and "Simple&Clean" as Bonus tracks on the U.S. Album when I heard about it? Hmmmm........still don't know. I have both songs already so it's not like it'll be a big thing for ME personally. I have "Simple&Clean" on my Kingdom Hearts Soundtrack Album. I guess it'll be nice to finally have "Sanctuary" on an Album but they're so old that I can't imagine myself playing them much. My dilemma is I hate the English Track Order so I plan on continuing to only play my Japanese Album in my car and on my stereo in my room. But then I'd like to have Sanctuary from the English Album on a Album to finally play it somewhere else besides my little computer speakers so that sucks. So that means I'd have to play my English Album to get it that way which I won't be doing so I'd still be missing out. I'll just have to settle for moving the song over to my Japanese Tracks in iTunes even though I could do that right now. And I'm definitely not going to put in a CD in my car just for one song. Decisions decisions. If she does get the rights and she sounded like it was in the bag, I wish she had did it for her Japanese Album as well. Would have been so much better than the Bonus tracks that one got that I don't even listen to. Ugh. Also, Utada is at #55 on Mediabase. Very good. Keep requesting. Also I just found this Biography and I found this part of it interesting: "One Japanese-language platinum-selling album after another followed and the Japanese press took note of Utada's unique style, influenced by the alternative rock from America. Academics kept her away from doing many interviews, and her mystique grew as a result. In 2004 she announced she was moving to the Island-Universal Music Japan label and recording an English-language album. Her single "Exodus 04" became a heartbreaker for her solid fan base when her lyrics were taken as a goodbye to Japan. The album Exodus was released in Japan on September 8, 2004, and Utada now held the record for largest-ever one-day shipment of an English-language album by doubling Mariah Carey's previous record of 500,000. The album mixed wistful pop and sparkling dance music and featured producer Timbaland and Mars Volta drummer Jon Theodore. American J-pop fans were aware of her for years, but Utada got her first mainstream U.S. exposure when the "Devil Inside" single appeared in September 2004 with Rjd2, the Scumfrog, and Richard Vission handling the remixes. Exodus received its American release on Island in October of the same year. In 2007 EMI announced that Utada had set a record for a Japanese recording artist with combined sales of 7.7 million across all formats (CDs, digital downloads, ringtones, etc.). ~ David Jeffries, All Music Guide" I had no idea that her fans in Japan thought she was leaving them for good for America based on that song. That would have been a depressing moment lingering in that assumption until it was deemed untrue. And when you think of the song that way it brings on a whole new feeling and meaning. I need to go back and listen to it soon to see if I can bring up that feeling.

Have the lyrics been posted yet? I'm having trouble figuring out what she is saying on "This One (Crying Like A Child)". And I hope this will be her next single, the song makes me want to cry. It's so sad.
What do you by "it's not radio-friendly enough"? |

Well I don't what his reasons are...but for me, I would want it to be the next single...
but I agree that it isn't radio-friendly lol It's not as easy to listen to as the other tracks, and it's not what usually comes on the radio. Apple and Cinnamon or This One will probably be the next single... although I wouldn't mind if it was Me Muero lol

IMO, the things that make people think it's a nod toward her Japanese works are the exact things I think would hinder it. The lyrics are way too strange, the melodies are not tight enough, and the piano piece basis isn't what most people would want to hear on the radio these days. Unfortunately, the next single should be something a bit less complex. I'm not saying I don't like it, I just don't think it would be a very good single.

I'm all for "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence - FYI" being the next Single. I don't see it having any less of a chance of success than any of the other Potential Singles.
It's perfect, new, different and fresh. It'll definitely catch attention. I think Utada realizes this too with her decision to perform it on live national television. Even making it available on her Facebook and Myspace page. We definitely know where Utada's mind is at. As much as I like her other Ballads. She shouldn't over do it with these slow songs. She needs something immediately catchy and more danceable and perhaps provocative. Also she's already got the Ballad Lovers with "Come Back To Me". Let the upbeat crowd know that there's something in "This Is The One" for them too. Which is another reason I'm glad she's choosing to sing "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence - FYI" live as well. Also, I thought this was interesting: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8s...us-market_news It's like a mini report from some news program on Utada's Status and it talks about her Sephora events and her fans and it has footage of her Sephora events as well so it's recent. I'm getting worried though that maybe they pushed back "This Is The One" a little too far because Utada's already really at the top of her promotion it seems and if they release in May, I believe the hype will be over with and people's attention will have moved on to other things. I just hope they can keep up this promotion at this level until May 12th so that people won't forget about it.

/\ Well... american music market isn't as rigid as japanese one... there you have pretty much the first month (or 2 weeks )to release and promote an album...
in the US it's common to keep promoting the same single and album for months, and is somewhat common to new artists to starting to sell strongly after some months too... |

And for your info (no pun intended ) performing and promoting a secondary song at the same time as a current single doesn't mean it will be the next single. This is a common practice that a lot of up-and-comin' artists use to get their music out to the public. The fact that she is looking to what is hot on iTunes shows where her mind really is at: her actual fans. They are the ones out there buying off iTunes and lovin' "This One" and definitely not "FYI". Also, I came acrost this video recently... looks like there were some wapanese/weaboos at the Miami event: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecPaNnjzbJ8

I think that it's a nice strategy to grab atention with a generic song and then surprise people with a more experiemental one... it's not like she is sounding like Bjork or something like that in FYI
If she is going to take the "safe" rote, the best single would be Taking my money back |
