No no, not at all! The cellphone uses the camera feature to scan the barcode. The camera, when in reader mode, acts as a scanner and looks for one of those square barcodes. When the camera finds one, it makes a beeping noise and reads the information, usually bringing up an internet link. When I click on that link I get taken to the website encoded into the barcode!

wow!! this is a very new info for me (since I never seen in Malaysia and other countries that I travelled), and kinda amazed by the phone function in Japan.
