If you want something more "modern" I think it would be interesting to pick a more jpoppish song... But I wouldn't say Hello! Project materal...most of their followers in Japan are old men and otakus that like cute young virgin girls @___@ That's why they don't have manny hits...

Some very jpoppish songs IMO:
Ai Otsuka: Smily, Peach, Chu-lip
Ayu: Blue Bird, Boys & Girls, Fly High, Audience
Namie: Body feels exit, Take the Chance
Hikki: Traveling
Koda: Wind, Birthday eve

I wouldn't pick a ballad either... most of them aren't that different from pop ballads in any place on earth^^
